Roger Corman (now 94, 2020) is literally a living legend among film makers. He started his long career in films in the mail room at 20th Century Fox. Eager to rise above that, he contributed his ideas to the 1950 movie The Gunfighter starring Gregory Peck and when he got no acknowledgement, he quit in disgust. After a period of study he returned to the studios and got work as a stage hand, a messenger and as an assistant to a literary agent. He wrote a script in his spare time and sold it for $2,000 which was released with the title of Highway Dragnet in 1953 starring Joan Bennett and Richard Conte. Then he established his own company Palo Alto and produced his first film Monster From The Ocean Floor in 1954. Then he was on a roll churning out pictures which, although very B grade, did make money. He got his first critical praise in Machine Gun Kelly in 1958 which gave Charles Bronson his first leading role. His 1959 Crime and Punishment gave George Hamilton his first big role. He moved into making major films in 1959 and in 1960 produced The House Of Usher based on an Edgar Allen Poe story starring Vincent Price. It was a notable hit. In 1965 he joined United Artists and also Colombia. His list of movies is huge - he directed fifty-five and produced 385 (1954 - 2008) as well as writing and even having cameo acting roles. His list of major awards including an Honorary Oscar in 2010 is equally long. For a film maker who started making cheap B grade trash movies, Corman has become recognised as a major and respected film maker.

Well made Roger Corman film. Cheap but effective monster make-up (really scared me when I watched this on TV as a kid). If you liked this movie, check out Blood of Dracula (1957). This is a great underrated B-movie about a troubled teenaged girl at a boarding school who turns into a vampire under hypnosis. Similar in plot and style to The Wasp Woman as the girl inadvertently becomes a monster (with another low-budget, but very scary make-up). Also check out the episode entitled "ZZZZZZZ" of the original Outer Limits TV show. As in WW, a sultry, dark-haired vixen (Joanna Frank) becomes a predatory queen bee!

I just looked up the lead actress in this Susan Cabot, hoping to find more movies she'd starred in as I was impressed by her performance. Sadly this was her last movie. After this, she did some TV and theatre work but retired from acting in 1970. It seems Susan had a very sad life and death, beaten to death with a bar bell by her only son Timmy (then 22 and on powerful drugs for multiple serious health issues including Dwarfism), in 1986 when she was 59. Timmy ultimately got charged with involuntary manslaughter after claiming she had attacked him in the night in a confused state, calling out for her estranged mother Elizabeth, and he had defended himself. It didn't look good for him that he initially lied, hid the bar bell from police, and claimed an intruder dressed as a Ninja had attacked them both. However he eventually confessed, and was not imprisoned, but sentenced to two years probation. Susan suffered lifelong mental health issues, due to her terrible childhood. Her father abandoned her mother when she was born, and her mother then had a breakdown and was institutionalised, making Susan effectively an orphan. She was thrown around 8 different foster homes in the Bronx, and sexually and emotionally abused which triggered PTSD. She married an old friend to escape the care system, and worked as a children's books illustrator and sang in clubs. There she was spotted by talent scouts and signed to Universal Pictures. It's a shame her movie career was short lived, and didn't progress beyond low budget films. But in view of her terrible start in life, it's amazing she achieved the success she did. They say your earliest, formative years, good or bad, can be the making or breaking of you. Some people like poor Susan, get a very raw deal. Children in care have no parents to look out for them, so are uniquely vulnerable to abuse, and that was probably even truer in the 'twenties and thirties than it is today. It seems her son Timmy's defence lawyers blackened her reputation, to get him a lenient, non custodial sentence. In the trial, Susan was branded mentally unstable and abusive, and her home was described as 'full of garbage and spoilt food'. It was also said Timmy loved her, and had only struck her in self defence. We'll never know, she she was a tiny, frail woman, and it seems likely the powerful drugs he took for his various conditions could have made him aggressive. Timmy died of natural causes in 2003 aged 38. There are some affectionate tributes to him online from friends, who talk of his artistic talents, his skill for fixing things and his love for his Akita dogs. One post claims he was the unacknowledged son of King Hussein, whom Susan is said to have had a relationship with (he was born in 1964 between her two marriages). A very sad story. Barboura Morris who played Mary in 'Wasp Woman' also died young, succumbing to a stroke as she battled cancer aged just 43, in 1975. She was also in 'A Bucket of Blood' in 1959, and dated director Roger Corman during filming.

This was very well done. It didn't look like a low budget film. I don't know about the date as I saw a 63 Chevy Impala in one street scene. The Ford Ranchero in the beginning was at least a 61. So I question the 1959 date. It must have been early 60s. Image quality and sound were excellent. Lots of attention to detail. I liked the 2- and 3-digit phone numbers for interoffice calls on the rotary dial phones. I'm old enough to remember offices like that. I worked for Allied Chemical in the early 70s. We still had rotary dial phones for a while.
