@gbl08ma7 ай бұрын
Most likely, none of the three games hit the sales targets Ubisoft had set (which must have been pretty high - these types of games are never cheap to make). The series wasn't an Assassin's Creed-sized hit, despite each WD game likely costing as much to make as each main AC title, and so instead of going for the "iterate on a good formula to make it better" approach, they kept going for the "throw new things at the wall to see what sticks" one, hoping to magically give birth to something that would sell comparably to AC. The result is a franchise where hardly anyone was truly pleased with all three games, given they all have quite different "styles", and despite some shared lore, each game's story could as well take place in different universes.

I do believe that Watch Dogs seriously deserves a remake. The game launched in a horrible state and most features that really enhanced the games identity were cut out before launch. Mods such as "Living City" bring back some features but remaking the game to where it combines the gameplay of Watch Dogs 2 and the identity and story present in Watch Dogs 1 would be perfect Imo. Although Ubisoft would never do this.

Watch Dogs 1 was such a great game. I loved the serious theme and tone they set with aaedon and the dark world of chicago. Then they ruined that by giving us a goofy and silly cast of characters and less serious tones in the second game with a neutered weapon system and enemies. And then Legion just ruined it all at the start with that play as anyone nonesense. Watch Dogs should've either kept the serious tone or had the story go along with Aaedon. He could've been the Ezio of this franchise. Watch dogs going down the non serious route and also giving us lame characters as the games went on is what completely killed the franchise in my opinion.

i think Ubi needs to go full publisher mode and just outsource their games to studios who can focus on just 1 title at a time with a smaller, tighter-knit team. All of their mainline franchises are dead or declining, despite such immense potential and brand recognition that rivals standalone giants in the industry. The problem (in broad terms, there are hours-long videos talking about this) is that the games are too bland, too safe, too underwritten, have forgotten what made them unique and interesting and beloved. If Bethesda in all her arrogance can outsource a Fallout game that remains (arguably) the most beloved in the franchise, why not have Ubi take a stab at outsourcing the next Watch_Dogs? As publisher they could still have a strong say in the art direction and overall themes, but a dev studio that actually has the ability to give a shit could handle the mechanics, the moment-to-moment. We're in a year where every month a new game made by a tiny indie studio absolutely makes waves in ways only triple-A titles used to. Big teams with an infinite budget isn't the answer; a tight-knit team that knows what they want and gives a damn about what they're doing could save them.
@gbl08ma7 ай бұрын
Although I quite enjoy the multiplayer invasions in WD1 (and I could easily go on about the things that make them a somewhat special and unique mechanic not easily transferable to many other games), I couldn't agree more with the majority of the other points in this video and especially the take on "GTA Clones." This is the second KZbin video where I'm compelled to share two paragraphs of a long rant about Watch Dogs, that I wrote nearly two years ago: The Watch Dogs games fall squarely into two categories: “yet another Ubisoft open world game” and what some people call “GTA Clones.” It’s hard to argue against either categorization, but the second one, in itself, has some problems. The three Watch Dogs games came out after the initial release of the latest entry in the Grand Theft Auto series (GTA V in 2013), and GTA VI is yet to be officially announced [this was written in early 2022...], so snarky people like me could even say that, if anything, Watch Dogs is a continuation, not a clone, of GTA! More seriously, there are people on the internet who will happily spend some time telling you how “GTA clone” is a terrible designation that is actually hurting open world games in general, by discouraging developers from making more open world games with a modern setting - and I generally agree with them. But I prefer to attack this “GTA clone” designation in a different way, the childish one, where you point the finger back the accuser and yell “you too!”: GTA Online has, in multiple of its updates, also “cloned” some of the gameplay elements most recently seen in Watch Dogs, and GTA in general has also taken inspiration from different open world games that were released over the years.

Plus the chaos you can cause with calling cops or gangs on anyone but the dialogue hurt most the time. Felt like a 60 year old trying to talk how they assume the younger generation actually talks. 3 you can pretty much beat anything with a loader drone, and a spider drone. Just fly out of sight over a base and wipe out as many as possible with the spider drone . The hitman / spy characters are fun and there are some neat gimmicks . Plot was okay ish but never felt immersive due to a lack of a protag.

Played the first game, never beat it; got bogged down in all the mechanics and having to solve a dozen spacial puzzles to complete a mission/escape the police. Liked the vibe, but was put off by the overly complicated mechanics (well, let’s say, “overly complicated, but simultaneously overly simplistic: if I’m screaming down the road in my car trying to escape the police, do I want to have to point my cellphone at a stop light to “hack” it red to cause traffic to slow down the cops? No, this all detracts from the joy of driving fast and outrunning the police, and clutters the screen with noise and tiny text literally everywhere; at the same time, the complexity of hacking something even as simple as a single stoplight? It’s gotta be incredibly complicated, and the idea that you can just push a button on your cell phone while screaming through the intersection is absurd.) I skipped Watch Dogs 2 because I was still put off by the first game’s mechanics, and it didn’t look like it had the depressed-Chicago Midwest hacker/Mr. Robot-esque vibes. I recently got it on Steam sale and tried playing it and the first mission’s slowness due to the number of things you have to hack to infiltrate this building just totally put me off the series again, and I didn’t buy this happy-go-lucky-hookup-party-boy as a serious hacker with an important story to tell in that world. (Referring to the drunken hottie hookup at the party after the successful first mission; I’ve never met a hacker who had the social wherewithal to pull a hottie at a street party irl!). Idk, I may be wrong. Ironically, Watch Dogs: Legion was the installment that I actually spent the most time with around the time that it came out. I was fascinated by and thoroughly intrigued with the “recruit/play as any NPC you can find on the street” mechanic. I love character customization in games, as well as random stats, premadeath, RPG elements, and character collecting mechanics, and this game from memory has at least a few of those. I think it’s disappointing that so many reviewers and critics of Watch Dogs criticize that central mechanic in Watch Dogs: Legion; I thought it was the most interesting/groundbreaking feature in the entire series, and I would love to see it implemented in other games!

I will forever maintain that Watch Dogs 1 had the exact same potential that Assassin's Creed 2 had. Aidan's story has a lot of the same story beats, he's the classic Assassin's Creed protagonist. An angry man chasing revenge for a murdered family member/members. I've never understood people who claimed that an AC game set in modern times wouldn't work, because that's what Watch Dogs 1 was. The story, the world design, the combat, the stealth, the parkour elements. All AC, just dialed back a bit to make breathing room for the new mechanics. It even ties into AC4's story at one point, with you killing an Abstergo CEO in a side mission and the main story hinting that CTOS and Blume are all Templar fronts. It really had so much potential. People are too quick to deal heavy backlash to new IPs, never allowing them the grace needed to grow with time and additional entries. Mass Effect Andromeda suffered this same fate. Aidan deserved a trilogy, and I will legitimately die mad about the fact that it will never happen because of people being whiny that it didn't make their graphics card cry enough.

Nine minutes 21 seconds that’s how long I could watch your video before KZbin decided that instead of fixing the bit right I need to watch your video in 140 P because apparently today somebody woke up and said instead of fixing you too, but make it 10,000 times worse sorry can’t finish your video because I can’t finish anything on KZbin. Nothing will load at 1080 P So I guess I’m just gonna start watching Hulu and Netflix too. I’m not paying $15 a month to get enhanced a bit rate so it can’t load ever.

Watchdogs being a GTA clone is not a bad thing; what was bad for me was the main characters of the first two and certain narrative choices. Aiden felt too one dimensional with motives and everyone in the second game gave me “hey fellow kids” meets l33t hacker and influencer vibes. I got the sense that a lot of the NPCs were more plot points to drive the narrative than actual characters

Why they did not continue a story with Aiden Pierce makes no sense to me.. He was actually a great video game character, I loved his grey-man, subtle attitude and cut to the chase no bullshit dialogue. Within his character he virtually has no emotion based off of his past experiences but he still has a heart that cares. That makes for such a polarized character that gives great tone to the story.. It made sense.

Personally, I'd love a game that took what splinter cell and watch dogs 1 brought and combined them. A stealth oriented game where you have to be clever and resourceful to complete your task since direct combat is heavily not in your favor. Like choosing between remote work utilizing drones and access ports, making things take longer and more puzzle like but easier to get away if things go bad. Or more close and personal stealth, sneaking in or disguising yourself to skip the puzzles and such for more direct access but making escaping harder. A reputation system on who you use the hacking on and what you do with it. Stuff like that would be amazing. Ubisoft could never lol

Aside from Ac, this the game that I really love but sadly it's just most likely never gonna be worked on again...

I really enjoyed the 2nd game the most out of all 3. I had the most fun with that one.

I would of loved a prequel WD's game with a younger Aiden Pierce protecting his younger sister Sarah and being mentored by Damian

Watch dogs wasn't really a hacker game people complained about that, then watch dogs 2 was a hacker game, and people complained because it wasn't John wick simulator anymore.

I think one of the most confusing moments in all of watch_dogs happened to me in 2. I'm walking down the street and see a guy hit this woman in the face so my Aiden instincts kicked in and I knocked him out.....only for the woman to immediately start punching me for it. So I tazed her. I don't know how you go from such an alive world like Chicago to a world that just feels fake like San Francisco. I was pretty well done with watch_dogs after that. I look forward to seeing how bad the movie is.

Watch dogs 1 dissapointed me so much that I haven't touched an ubisoft game since. The vibe of it and Chicago was actually incredible. The hacking had so much potential, and Aiden as a character had so much potential like a hacker batman. But I can't scrape any other good things out of this stinky tank.

Watch Dogs was recommended to me by one of my best gaming buddies and it was one of the first games I played on my new xbone and I fell in love with it. Looking back on it now, after having played it and Cyberpunk, Watch Dogs had this pre dystopian cyberpunk feel to it. The world felt real, dark, and gritty, where you didn’t have to suspend your disbelief too much to get immersed. While the story wasn’t anything super amazing, being a simple revenge story, it was still enjoyable. I didn’t encounter bugs that other players did so thankfully my opinion of the game wasn’t soured by that. Watch Dogs 2 had great gameplay but the story was atrocious. They took the elements of the first game and turned them into a giant parody. I can see why people compared it to GTA 5 because it was just so whacky for the sake of being whacky. The dialogue between characters really drove the nail in that coffin, sounding like a dad trying to relate to his teenager by adopting their slang. I wish they had stuck to the formula of storytelling like the first game or even continued Aiden’s story instead. But alas, here we are. I may give the third installment a try sometime, but I won’t hold my breath for anything that’ll really stick with me like the first did.

Watch Dogs 1 and 2 were genuinely fun games. Legion, on the other hand, felt extremely tedious to play through Watch Dogs 1, I especially loved, not really a fan of the "Nerd" appeal of the second game.

The potential of this franchise is extremely wasted and I’m very upset about it. Saints Row was originally my alternative to GTA and I was counting on Watch Dogs to be that Saints Row replacement when Saints Row was having that identity crisis issue with their franchise as well.

I think Watch Dogs was screwed as a franchise when the game released and it didn’t look or play anywhere near as good as the E3 demo* made it look like it would. Even for those of us who really enjoyed WD1, there’s absolutely no question that the game we got did not look anywhere near as good as what was promised, and the chasm of difference between the hype and the reception was so apparent that I think this factor alone killed the franchise. By the time of WD2, while it was undoubtedly a popular game, it didn’t reach the heights of hype that its predecessor did and by the time of Legion, everyone could see what type of game it was from a mile away and most people seemed to understand this was a dead franchise walking. If WD1 had delivered on its promises, I think the appeal for more games in this series would have been far stronger but when interest evaporated pretty much overnight, there’s not much that can be done with a brand that’s associated with disappointment in the gaming sphere - especially since this was before the era of game saving patches like Cyberpunk or No Man’s Sky. *(Unrelated but I just have to say again how much I miss E3. It was a much better time for Gaming as a whole, reveal events are so much worse now than before.)

I find it interesting that people have come around to the first game and against the second since, at the time, people felt the complete opposite about both. At least we all agree Legion was an abomination

Watch_Dogs is one of my favorite open worlds due to it taking place somewhat close to home for me. I don't think it deserved to be made by Ubisoft.

Watch_Dogs is super good in my honest opinion, Ubisoft over corrected so damn hard from their own issues it broke any chance at a true franchise. Yet the pieces people end up liking are the parts that deal with Aiden or T-Bone in the other games more than anything. They really dropped the ball all because they were acared to stick with their guns after the marketing disaster around the first game.
