In Red Dead Redemption 2, I had hunted down the Legendary Bear and skinned its pelt and was bringing it back to the trapper. Along the way a woman asked me to bring her back to civilization and I genuinely grappled with the decision to leave that pelt behind since I was so immersed in the game. So when I left her there and brought the pelt to the trapper I ended up feeling like a major piece of shit and it was honestly the best moment I've ever experienced in a video game

In some Stalker 2 reviews some reviewer put your weapon getting jammed as a con, like it's an intentionally choice to add that with awesome weapon jamming animations and some reviewer just says oh my gun jammed in a Post-apocalyptic, survival game? FINALLY someone talked about streamers playing rdr2, most of them pretty much just rush through the story while barely exploring the open world and take things slow, i mean just look at ishowpeed's recent playthrough. Especially when the game was first released a lot of youtubers were rushing the game just so they can pump out a review as quick as possible then complain about how slow the game is and how the open world is empty💀

To be real though, there's no reason to interact with RDR's open world. It doesn't get you anything. You can hunt, but there's better hunting games that aren't as arbitrary. There's not much more outside that either, there's "random" events where people ask for a ride somewhere, usually not where you're going, and scripted events which play out the same way for everyone. I enjoy slow games, I really liked Death Stranding, but holy shit RDR2 is tedious.

I think these game reviewers aren't playing the game to experience it, they are playing it to review. This means they are too busy trying to 1. get through it quickly so they can get their review out on time and 2. break down the components of the game into bite sized ratings instead of throwing themselves into the journey that the game has created. Imo that makes video essays waaaaay more reliable and honest because they tend to be a reflection on the experience of the game and they get released post hype (usually). Game reviews and game scores don't have that kind of love and dedication in mind. Brilliant video!

Another factor that compounds this is the assumption of reviewers to arrive at a single objective truth. In other words they don't factor in their own subjectivity nor that of their readers. I suppose that's because in Journalism school they are essentially trained to become investigative journalists, who indeed are looking for 'the truth' when dealing mostly with hard facts. If the reviewer of Days Gone simply added the layer of subjectivity by mentioning that she personally got really annoyed by the damage/repair/upgrade mechanics but that it's great if you love that kind of stuff, the review would have been infinitely better as a frame of reference for deciding whether you like the game or not. EDIT: I should've watched the entire video first.....This exact point is made at 19:45

1:40 Okay, I actually agree with the principle in IGN's review, but they delivered it very poorly. The water routes in ORAS were dreadfully boring because the designers tried to have a near even amount of land routes/water routes. But unfortunately, the land routes are just far more interesting than surfing through a bland open sea for half the game. IGN understood this, and I think they aren't entirely wrong, but damn, they couldn't have phrased it worse... There is a difference between saying, "Water routes are too repetitive and bland." and saying, "Too much water." which basically summarizes my entire issue with game journalism most of the time, even if it's rooted in a genuine critic, it's so poorly articulated that it just comes across as completely incompetent.

The first 4/5 of the video I was agreeing with you, but TLOU2 stuff. Bruh. I don't have an issue with Abby being buff, but you can't go "it's a video game bro" while talking about a series that grounds itself as much as possible to realism. And in the case of Abby, IT DOES make sense. She's in a place where there's plenty of food, so she CAN focus on working out (which we're never really shown). BUT it is believable. Why else do you think she gets skinnier by the end of the game? Or why many of the characters are skinny. There's also other valid criticisms of the game. Why did the pregnant lady go out? Ellie kills dozens of men and doesn't flinch except if the story asks for it. The "holocaust" line (it's just cringy). Poor pacing. The video was supposed to be about critics (going by the title), but then devolves to talk about gamers, who disliked a game, and saying they're wrong. Which, in the beginning you were complaining about critics who gave Alien Isolation, Pokemon, Or Days Gone dumb critics. So how is that any different than you going "bro it's just a video game, it's not real life" ? Motorcycle breaking down easily from hitting too many enemies? Bro it's a video game, not real life. Alien seeing me because it's smart? Bro it's a video game not real life.

Why do people who like Tlou2 always dismiss the criticism it gets as just weirdos on the internet hating it. There is very very valid criticisms of the game especially it's writing which is great at points then hits a brick wall in others. @RealGerald7
@RealGerald7 28 күн бұрын
I agree, it also doesn’t make sense from a lore perspective for Abby to be built like she is without the use of steroids, which she most likely wouldn’t have access to for obvious reasons (it’s 20 something years into a zombie apocalypse). Also the pacing was wonky with how it made you play as Abby, if the game kept flip flopping between perspectives then it would have had a more cohesive flow, but letting the player experience most of Ellie’s story before Abby’s makes it incredibly difficult to put yourself in Abby’s shoes.

I lowkey hate public opinion because sometimes a game that is hated like fuk is hated by 98% people who have seen 10 minutes of gameplay from a popular person who dislikes it and just adopts other peoples opinions instead of thinking for themselves. Everyone has the same regurgitated opinion. Some games are just that bad, but sometimes you just got to try. But the worst part is liking a game (which is literally your opinion) and getting blasted to oblivion by people who haven’t played anything but Roblox but saw a popular twitch streamer clown on it.

Funny how You brought Starfield to the conversation. From what I saw, people ain't going after this game, because it's a Bethesda game in space. They hate it, because Bethesda hyped it so hard, people believed they'll finally gonna break the formula (which they actually hinted at throught the interviews), but turns out that wasn't the case and we got Fallout in space. Nothing bad about that, but if you're gonna atract a space sim crowd with a game like Starfield, I'd recommend transfering all the power to your shields.

Clever joke at the end lol When they showed off the gameplay trailer it was clear that the formula was going to be in the classic Bethesda style, I think it makes sense for people to be upset that they didn't break the style they've been running for the last 15 years. But I followed the hype all the way from the 2018 announcement to the launch and I don't think there was any false advertising But of course, I can understand people misinterpreting what they'd be getting themselves into

To be honest I liked the video but I will say the way you take very silly arguments and avoid honest criticism against LOU2 is exactly what game journalists have been doing. As I said I liked the video but I find that somewhat hypocritical. It gives off the feeling that negative feedback isn't as reasonable or civil as positive feedback based on your personal feelings. In the future it would be more fair to make fun of the silly arguments as well as acknowledge the well-founded ones to avoid misrepresenting alot of normal people with differing opinions to your audience that may already agree with you. Ironically that's the point of the video. Again no hate lad, you have great insight in subjection in critique and how we should see "critic reviews". Keep it up Lad.

You know I’m not a huge fan of Red Dead Redemption 2, but you want to know why? It’s literally only because it’s not my kind of game, no other reason. The game is gorgeous, looks beautiful, has an incredible story, has a thriving world, etc. I’ve even bought the game and played through the whole story and got really immersed. I loved it. But as I said, it’s simply just not my type of game. It’s not something I would want to play again nor is it something I could keep playing. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with the game, it’s an absolute gem, it’s just not my type of game and that’s all.

There are several reasons why i dislike abby from tlou2, but being a woman isn't one of them. I personally do not like this game, and it is because it disrespects the first game in almost every way possible, from spitting on joels grave and killing him a really stupid way. Joel survived 20 years of the outbreak, and he suddenly goes into a room filled with armed strangers and tells them everything about him, then gets beaten to death in a very brutal way. Nah, there is such a thing as RDR2 having too much "immersion" to the point that the gameplay suffers from it. If I'm choosing to stop hunting or actively park my horse on top of beasts just to skin them faster because I'm on the 80th hour of gameplay and have seen the animations hundreds of times, it's definitely a valid issue. At the end of the day, RDR2 can solve these issues by adding a skip option to the skinning animations or to the pre mission horse riding, but didn't. That's a valid criticism.

If they didn't like the game, they should give it a bad score. They shouldn't give 8/10's to every game just because some people might like it. If you often find yourself disagreeing with IGN or Gamespot. Find other reviewers who share opinions similar to you. you certainly made a lot of generalized statements about people who dislike Lou2. After saying not everyone will agree on games due to their nature. The reason I personally don’t like it, is 1, I have no interest in playing the character that killed a much loved character from the previous game. 2 the ending, if someone killed my father ( father figure in Ellie’s case) there is absolutely no way I let them go. i think the main reason ellie didn’t kill abby was she realizes she’s losing herself. throughout the game we hear the lyric “if i ever were to lose you, id surly lose myself”. joel says in the last conversation with ellie that he would still go back and save her if he could do it all over. joel would lose himself if he lost ellie and now we see her doing just that from losing joel. as she’s drowning abby we see a flash back to that last conversation and it’s at this point where she realizes what joel was saying. she realizes that she’s losing herself because she lost joel and now understands why joel killed SO MANY PEOPLE to save her and doesn’t regret it. she killed a lot of people because he died and joel killed a lot of people to prevent her from dying. i think her letting abby live is shows that she has finally forgiven joel. once she forgives him there is no reason to kill abby. what joel did was WAY worse to her than what abby did to joel. it wouldn’t make any sense to forgive joel and not forgive abby.

Honestly, as much as i like to shit on reviewers, they did give me a perspective on a lot of things. Some time back, i went back to some games i remembered really liking but all their reviews being trash. And honestly.. it wasn't a fun experience. Most of these games actually weren't as good as i remembered and it properly ruined my memory of them. I loved NSMB2 when it came out. Replaying it a few months ago made me realize that it's actually a fucking boring and easy game with very few new ideas and doesn't get above "meh" for me nowadays. We often forget that reviewers are encouraged to not let their personal experience during their playthrough influence their review too much. And let's just say, if we all going back to games we love, separated and isolated from the experience we had when discovering it, a lot of games we love aren't actually as good as we remember. The best example was Fortnite: OG. A lot of people went back to that and hated it, because not only were they expecting something else from the game at that point, but they themselves were not the same person they were when they first played the game. Also, to the progression point: I agree that games need progression. But the best games are those that feel great from the start and only get better. Something like Ghost Of Tsushima or Sekiro, who give you all important mechanics from the start and just give you more fun bonuses afterwards. In RDR2 for example (a game i love), the horse riding at the start felt like shit. Yeah, the progression felt good, but why do i gotta be frustrated for 10 hours before feeling that in a game not built for that kind of experience? Why can't the horse follow me from the start, but over time and affection, it gets faster, stronger, and gives us a special ability like time slowdown? It's a valid point that i feel too many people glorify.

I not only beat the main story, I 100% it and got every achievement (something I never do). I even grinded out the Challenges mode because I liked it so much. It's too bad people wrote the game off. If I ever find the confidence, I would like to do a character study on Deacon St. John one day.

The "too much water" one is true though, who has EVER looked back on a Pokémon game and the first thing they remember with fondness is their time spent surfing and diving? **NOBODY!**

hm I agreed with everything in this video and didn't think I was one of the people who fell for game hate bandwagons but it caught me by surprise when you said you loved Starfield! I haven't tried it because of everyone saying it was mid or even bad and since you seem to have the same taste as me I might actually give it a chance now! Great video as always! :)

Definitely give it a chance but I just couldn't do it. I'm a fallout 76 apologist and even I couldn't make it though starfield without feeling massively disappointed. The hate was warranted but that doesn't mean you won't necessarily enjoy it.

I have the perfect example of this! I absolutely love Rain World. The devs poured their hearts and souls into it and made an entire virtual ecosystem with unique AI, beautiful art, and absolutely incredible storytelling. Sounds good, right? So yeah the critics said “Uegh uegh hooo it’s too h- hardddd 🥺” as if that isn’t the point of a game where you play as a creature at the bottom of a food chain. Its job isn’t to hold your hand, its job is to simulate an ecosystem that took over the ruins of a lost civilization. Just because it’s too hard for you doesn’t mean you can’t practice or appreciate the factors of the game that don’t rely on difficulty. There are countless ways you can fight against predators that you can learn if you actually take the time to experiment with the world and resources at your disposal.

You do bring up a fair point with TLOU2, but I still think that the story was pretty bad as Ellie had little reason to spare Abby at that point. It would've made for a much better ending if Ellie killed Abby and the cycle of violence continued.
@SidPhoenix2211
@SidPhoenix2211 29 күн бұрын
Why? So she could continue to be miserable and spend her following years being empty and aimless (much like how Abby was, until she found some solace in helping Lev and Yara). I think that everything that happens in Santa Barbara happens in the right way and that is precisely what gives Ellie a complete arc. She manages to break out of her obsession and salvages some hope of finding a better path forward. She is also able to SPIRITUALLY lay Joel to rest at the very end (after physically laying him to rest soon after his death), finding some strange form of closure in that. Ellie doesn't really spare Abby because she got to peep Abby's backstory or anything lol. In fact, a LOT of the game is intentionally about people being ignorant of other people's stories and making no effort to understand them cuz they are too consumed with anger and hatred. Ellie's agency, and lack thereof, is a BIG part of her story in BOTH games. Revenge isn't really why she goes after Abby in the end, it is guilt, trauma, and wanting to reclaim some of the agency that pretty much everyone has denied her throughout her life. She either never gets to make a choice, and when she does.... someone else comes along and takes the chance of acting upon it away from her. As she is choking Abby out (now, this is my interpretation. This moment is quite ambigious), she realizes that she simply doesn't feel better. Abby is a mere few seconds away from giving up the ghost and Ellie does not feel better. She is literally bawling her eyes out. So she lets go. She CHOOSES to not go through with this. She realizes that this is NOT what Joel would want for her. So she stops, and leaves. Now, one can say that "why didn't Ellie realize this sooner?". Good point. To that I would say that people rarely realize what's good for them at an ideal time, or quickly. It is often at a rock bottom moment that someone can see things clearly. Ellie had been too wracked with anger, guilt etc to see that what she's doing simply wouldn't help her. She herself wasted 2yrs that she could've had with Joel and she will never get that back... and doing this won't bring that back. Just my thoughts, sorry for writing so much.

@@SidPhoenix2211 Until you realize Ellie murdered tons of Abby's friends and allies...yet spares Abby, see the problem? The idea sounds good but the execution was poor, honestly, they should have given us the Dishonoured type of system where the more people we kill the worse ending we get...but nope instead we don't get a choice in the matter.
@Kingtruman97

@@royalhistorian5109 i think the main reason ellie didn’t kill abby was she realizes she’s losing herself. throughout the game we hear the lyric “if i ever were to lose you, id surly lose myself”. joel says in the last conversation with ellie that he would still go back and save her if he could do it all over. joel would lose himself if he lost ellie and now we see her doing just that from losing joel. as she’s drowning abby we see a flash back to that last conversation and it’s at this point where she realizes what joel was saying. she realizes that she’s losing herself because she lost joel and now understands why joel killed SO MANY PEOPLE to save her and doesn’t regret it. she killed a lot of people because he died and joel killed a lot of people to prevent her from dying. i think her letting abby live is shows that she has finally forgiven joel. once she forgives him there is no reason to kill abby. what joel did was WAY worse to her than what abby did to joel. it wouldn’t make any sense to forgive joel and not forgive abby.

I feel that a lot of people don't realize that video games like Books and movies have to be reviewed from two different perspectives: As Art and as entertainment. I think reviewers tend to analyse games as art (Innovations, storytelling) while non-fans tend to look at games more as entertainment (fun, replayability, amount of content) Let me know If I am wrong

Let me get this straight. Your argument is that games criticism, which established that it's inappropriate to give anything less than a seven. Which copy PR directly from publishers. Who give the same COD, FIFA, Assassins' Creed, and whatever Bethesda cut n' paste is current 9/10 every time. THOSE guys aren't lenient enough with how they critique games? OK.
