Watch Dogs. A series that has gotten some of the most mixed reception in the video game industry. You either like it or you don’t and there’s no in between. From the dark and often depressing tone of Chicago in watch dogs 1, to the bright blue skies of san francisco in Watch Dogs 2, and all the way to the more tech and AI integrated near future of Watch Dogs Legion. There’s quite a lot of secrets throughout these 3 games and that’s what I want to go over in this video. Beneath the surface of it’s gameplay and story, there lies an iceberg of hidden details, references, easter eggs, mysteries and so on.

Set within a fictionalized version of the Chicago metropolitan area in 2013, the first installment in the series follows gray hat hacker and vigilante Aiden Pearce's quest for revenge after the killing of his niece. The game's development began in 2009, with a budget of $68 million. Watch Dogs was derived from a potential sequel from the Driver series which had been in development at Ubisoft Montreal coincident to Driver: San Francisco at Ubisoft Reflections and was released in 2011. Driver: San Francisco did not have a strong commercial performance, leading to the Driver game at Montreal being reworked into one that focused on hacking but still incorporated driving elements. Ubisoft Montreal was Watch Dogs' lead developer, with additional support provided by Ubisoft Reflections, Ubisoft Paris, Ubisoft Quebec, and Ubisoft Bucharest. The game was heavily anticipated following its gameplay reveal at E3 2012, though the final game, which was accused of graphical downgrading, triggered controversy. The game was released for Windows, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One in May 2014, and a Wii U version was released in November 2014.

Well, at least Watch Dogs 1 was trying to be ambitious, unique and innovative. Even tho the final build doesn't look like the E3 demos, the complexity of the game is still there. It actually has depth. Every mission you play is filled with details, and all the NPC's are the most organic I've ever seen. Just walking around alone is amazing in this game! This is what makes me play the game over and over again every year! You don't see that kind of effort today! Nowhere near. Today is just pretty graphics and cosmetics.. No wonder gaming feels so boring lately

WD1 is a great game, I've never even tried the DLC for some reason, but that looks really cool as well. And ofc, if you mod WD1 to include some cut content (like with the Living_City mod, it becomes more like how ubisoft originally intended) I honestly never really cared about the graphics downgrade, and I've never used any graphics mods. The game itself is just too enjoyable to care about that.

It turns out that the E3 demo graphics were available in the full game as it was stated by an odd header video that the upgraded graphics were "switched off" and can actually be used in the PC version. He theorised that it could be because the consoles couldn't handle the higher graphics so they agreed to downgrade across all platforms instead (or were bribed by PS and Xbox not to make their hardware look shot compared to PC)

@@HeySlickThatsMe still upgrades the game though, bit weird they chose to downgrade presets when it ran smoothly regardless. My comment is purely speculative and there's still reason to believe it could've been the case, just more improbable.

I genuinely hope Ubisoft will improve the Watch Dogs series. If anything, maybe the 4th game can be a prequel. I was thinking it can take place after the events of WD1 but **RIGHT BEFORE** the events of WD2, basically an origin story. Plus I would like to see how Josh, Sitara, Horatio and Wrench all first met each other and teamed up, and for each of them to have a bit of more backstory

I quite liked watch dogs as a series, and while I disliked legion, I still liked the general idea of a hacking version of gta. Hacking in general has always been a massive fascination of mine, so it’s nice to finally see watch dogs getting some flowers, regardless of Ubisoft’s occasional scummy practices.

I Believe that the ship is a reference to the late Edmund Fitzgerald, as it was a popular Great Lakes ship, and Chicago is on Lake Michigan.

Ubisoft did release Watch Dogs with nerfed graphics in order to make the console ones look good. It has very often been like this, game companies catering more to the console market and purposefully nerfing the PC graphics in order not to make the consoles look bad.

WD1 is one of my most favourite games of all time, it's something i always return to, i like the kinda Need for Speed: Wanted/Burnout Revenge part of police chases where you can take out the cars in a "less lethal" way, the gun takedowns are great, and I've discovered a lot of music from it too, even indirectly because of KZbin recommendations and Spotify radio 😂 Aiden and T-Bone are really cool characters, and the game has some quite nice minigames and side missions, it gives a Batman with guns feel imo, it was just sadly overshadowed by a few games.

TLDR: “Leaked” Ubisoft space game from Ubistolen mission ended up getting cancelled and reworked into Rainbow Six Extraction Hey, for anyone wondering what that “leaked” Ubisoft space game ended up being, all fingers point to the original concept, codenamed “Pioneer” getting scrapped and somehow being reworked into Rainbow Six Extraction. Although we never got the original game, Alex Hutchinson, (known for work on Sims 2, Spore, Assassins Creed 3, Far Cry 4) creative director of “Pioneer”, left EA after they canned it and went on to create Journey to the Savage Planet at Typhoon Studios (now defunct and reborn as Racoon Logic). Now this hasn’t been said anywhere from what I’ve seen, but I find it a bit too coincidental that right after he leaves EA because he can’t do the space exploration game he wants to, he starts a new company and makes a game about exploration on an alien planet. In my eyes, Journey to the Savage Planet is a spiritual successor to that game and if you played that and enjoyed it, they are working on a second one right now. Sorry for blabbering so much, I was just REALLY interested in this specific topic and needed somewhere to share the info I found

I'm so grateful that you made an iceberg for Watchdogs, 1 of my all time favourite franchises. Wd1 was just the best for the time it came out despite the downgrades the game held up really well imo, ubisoft bit off more than they could chew imo because yes they may have had this vision but a lot of companies do and then deliver a less detailed final product although the franchise is still very detailed. I really hope there is more for the future and that legion hasn't drawn the line because I think Ubisoft can learn from mistakes rather than just erase them.

As for the last point- Scotland leaving the UK- there was a Scottish referendum to leave the UK back in 2014 and murmurings about the possibility before that when Brexit was first announced. Kinda grew up on two compared to the generic mundane atmosphere of one but I can see the reason why for the drastic change from one to two while three doing a poor attempt of combining both. One wasn’t even doing well at the start considering the controversy with the downgraded graphics and the open world activities being terrible and repetitive before the dlcs. Two kinda fixed that while focusing on the social aspects of media and society aswell as a weird but fun story

I have currently been playing Watch Dogs 1, and I must admit, I was a bit too harsh on the game, I am having a lot of fun with the game. But I will always stick with the driving being the worst I have ever seen. Watchdogs 1 was fun and cool. Watchdogs 2 was fun and GTA feeling but kinda overwhelming at times. Watchdogs Legion was ok, not great but ok, the dlc where you play as aiden/wrench feels what the game should have been, making the protagonist a faceless entity was dumb
