It's nice to see a watch channel cover the iconic Dollar Watch. These were such an important part of horological history. At a time when every man carried a pocket watch, the dollar watch became the common man's watch. Considering 1880s wages and that a skilled worker could earn 25 cents an hour. a watch for $50 or more represented about a months wages. Even a good beater watch could cost about $10. A railroad watch cost about $100. Dollar watches were very popular.

I've got a Dollar watch sat on my desk, it was my great grandfather's in the UK. I've had the case back off it has no makers name on it. The dial has the name of a UK watch company "Hancock's of Hanley". It still runs but appears to be running at around -26 seconds a day. We suspect around 1910 it was made.

funfact: in the US, the brand Ingersoll is still owned by Timex, thats why the ingersoll watches are not officialy sold in the US. funfact 2: The Ingersoll Watches are the watches, that brings me in to the Hobby. and, even if they are highly overpriced in Europe and screams "massproduces in china" on all corners, a bit of the heritage of this brandname is still there in a lot of their watch designs

Are you saying that Ingrosoll watches made today are not made by Timex and are therefore illegally branded?
@noobfl
@noobfl 3 жыл бұрын
@@justafanmarvel9669 nope.. the Zeon Watch Company legaly owns the Brand Ingersoll (outside of the us), but in the US, Timex have the Brandname.. therefore are Ingersoll Watches not (officialy) sold on the US Market

@@noobfl ok this is a bit confusing... I know that the original.company had a Great Britain factory... when they went bankrupt I believe Waterbury bought them out. Timex later bought out Waterbury so Timex owns Ignrosoll which was owned by Waterbury. So since the Great Britain factory was purchased by another company... Are there 2 Ignrosoll watch companies legally now? That seems like a legal problem
@noobfl
@noobfl 3 жыл бұрын
@@justafanmarvel9669 its.. complicated ;) Timex dont buy the Waterbury Watch Company, Timex IS the Waterbury Watch Company. Ingersoll was, originaly, not a Watch-Company, but a Mailorder Company.. Ingersoll let Waterbury build their famous Dollarwatch. Then, Ingersoll went bancrupt and the Waterbury Watch Company buy Ingersoll in 1921. The Waterbury Watch Company then sold the UK based part of the Ingersoll Company, witch becommes the Ingersoll LTD in 1930. Since then, there where legaly two "Ingersolls", one Ingersoll Watch Company, as Part of the Waterbury Watch Company (witch was renamed to Timex in 1940) and one Ingersoll LTD. Timex stops to produce Ingersoll Watches in 1950. The UK Part, now a part of the Zeon Watch Group still produces Watches till today, but not sell them in the US. But yeah, its a very confusing history ;)
