Sounds like the movie is another great example of nepotism and wealth inequality destroying Hollywood if the north west lion king performance wasn’t enough already lol. Prior to this I learned that Ishana only film credits were the last 2 films her dad made as an assistant director and as a writer for his TV show servant so yeah nepotism is real for her, people like to downplay nepotism for black/POC groups but I feel nepotism for us only does more a disservice bc it only showcase the class inequality and division among us and its causes issues of exceptionalism and tokenism which we know through history does nothing for us, this is why things like intersectionality should be more addressed and recognized

The book was flawed, but an okay read. It has an interesting premise that falls apart when The Watchers are explained. When the explanation of the building's existence is brought up, it makes no sense. It would take so long to dig up the ground for the bunker, bring in the bunker, and build a concrete building on top. For every day of construction, people keep dying at night. What? The movie is worse. One distraction is how it is never explained how an American is in Ireland working at a pet store. I almost walked out twice and started falling asleep around the time the dead husband showed up. Couldn't someone fly a drone around or a helicopter to look for missing people only to realize nothing works near the wooded area. Maybe if a more experienced director or screenwriter had adapted the novel, it might have worked.

it's funny, I would say most of the time with KZbinrs they get a lot more out of videos about things they don't like. It can be fun and entertaining to nit-pick something that people find worthy of derision, but I feel like your channel is a situation where you get way more out of content that you actually like. neither is better than the other. just an observation. on a related note: I wasn't sure where to ask you this, but I wanted to suggest Oliver Sack's "awakenings" for a book versus movie. I've never seen the Robin Williams movie, I'll try to check it out, it looks really sweet . This was one of my favorite books as a teenager. Sacks is so empathetic and he searches for humanity within every patient. His perspective really helped me open up to understanding people with so much more gentleness and empathy that I had not seen dealing with conflicts had never been confronted by. Years after he wrote the book, research around the neurological condition had developed much further and consequentially he ended up refuting some of the positions he had held with regards to treatment at the time of his work. I don't think that takes away from any of the beauty or humanity of "awakenings" but I think it would be irresponsible to not acknowledge that. Awakenings is not a collection of work that should necessarily be taken as scientific research but as an emotionally driven study in human triumph and resilience in the face of incomprehensible struggles. sorry for doing such a long comment on something unrelated to this video's topic 😅

For me I actually the opposite I’ve always been a critical person and I much better at articulating myself on things that are negative or mixed critical of, like movies such as challengers I was so critical of bc I’ve shown more to not liking it but for a movie like I saw the tv glow I wasn’t too critical of it bc I generally liked it

I saw the movie, it felt more like a dark fantasy film than horror, I wondered about how they get food and they didn't freak out about how they were stuck in a room in the woods. But I like Georgina Campbell, she was great in BARBARIAN. It was ok. Good vid.

The watches was an excellent movie I enjoyed this movie very much I loved all the backstory with the professor in all the backstory about the fairies I thought it was kind of cool that the fairies and humans have made babies I've been watching movies for years and I love this story a lot. I'm so sorry that you didn't like it

Yeah he set up the glass so they could observe him. If I recall, they hadn't even been mimicking humans because no one had been in the forest for so long until the professor came and they learned all over again how to do it. He didn't have one in the bunker with him like in the movie though. So it wasn't as one on one as it appears in the movie.

I thought overall all the beginning had potential hook, but then it was OK, but ending number 2 & 3 kinda of started to drag on for me. But didn't hate, I would say it was a 5/10 maybe 5.5/10.

My friend and I just watched the movie and we were like how was it logistically possible for the professor to get 13 day workers a day out to the middle of nowhere, perform substantial work, then leave them to die… every night? There was a lot that just made no sense. Also, my pet peeve- Mina lugging that stupid bird cage when they were running for their freaking lives. Like drop the stupid birdcage, gorl!

Yeah, it was supposed to be meaningful, because she doesn't maintain relationships or care about people but this bird is teaching her to hold onto things and care. But logistically it didn't make sense lol.

The trailer gives me a From vibe. But I can watch From for free and it’s more complex than this. But the premise is people end up at a place they can’t leave and creatures come out at night to try to kill them.

I didn't read The Watchers, but I read his second novel, The Creeper, back in 2022, which was absolutely god awful. Your recap of the plot and differences between book and movie are fantastic but WOW does this plot also sound terrible. Glad I never read it and will definitely continue avoiding this author lol thanks for the recap and comparison

I read the spoiler when the trailer came out. Seems like the spoiler was spot on. The leaker, didn't like the book. It was not only stupid, but badly written. So a horrible read. But they did highlight the twist was the only saving grace. I mean the guy knows about the vicious creatures, but instead of building multiple stations and basically island hop into the forest in safety, he gets the workers killed. How cruel is that! I'm surprised there wasn't a deep village in the middle of this forest where people live in harmony with the watchers and guard this secret. Would make more sense than no-one really venturing into this forest and not sparking some massive manhunt. Haven't they heard of GPS!

Ok, I posted that comment at the beginning of your video because I was soooo glad I wasn't crazy for not liking this movie. I've actually been trying to make myself believe it was better than it was all weekend. LOL. I went to see this the first night it was out and me and my daughter, along with one other couple were the only people in the theater. Anyway, I was very excited to see this because I LOVE M. Night Shyamalan movies!! LOVE them, and I thought this was HIS movie. I was so disappoint in him and this movie and now at least I'm happy that this wasn't his movie. I'm not sure how this movie was this bad, the acting just should've/could've been better! And who doesn't love a magical, ancient fairy movie??? It made no sense! I'm so glad you mentioned how weird it was that these people had been missing, yet NO ONE seemed to know or care when they returned. I've gotta start paying better attention because I would not have rushed out to see this had i known it was Shyamalan's daughter and not him. Not a good movie, at all!

what really irked me is the amount of loose ends in both the book and the movie. i think no one missing mina is interesting, but would the person purchasing the bird not say anything about their expensive bird not showing up? how did mina return to her apartment, electricity still on, after presumably not paying rent for several months? the movie felt like mostly plot and almost no character development whatsoever. at no point did i care whether any of them lived or died. some of the deviations were downright strange: why would the watchers applaud, how do they even know to applaud if this is the only human activity that they’re observing? i thought that they were watching them partly out of interest, but also to be able to better mimic them later, not strictly for entertainment (the dancing was such an odd choice). how did adding the borough part enhance the story in any way? so many choices that served no purpose and largely made no sense. and the lack of subtlety was driving me nuts. to spare everyone a dissertation, this feels like a filler book to me. something churned out to fit into a genre because they know it will sell. i’m perplexed as to why something like this would get picked up for a movie adaptation instead of a standout in the genre, especially for a directorial debut (and someone with big shoes to fill). great video!

Something at the end of the watcher made me really think of lady in the water and maybe this was trying to fix it big maybe don’t have to rewatch that crap to get my bearings again nothing to do with a book. What if the lady in the water was a halfway?

I liked the book, but didn’t love the author’s style. Sometimes I felt like his extended descriptions of mundane and irrelevant things took me out of some really intense and interesting events. Like taking half a page to describe how shiny someone’s bald head is (exaggerating of course. But you get my point). But I enjoyed the book and even the ending for the most part. Bummed out hearing most aren’t huge fans of the movie, sounds like an on demand rental for me lol Thanks for your review!

hey I haven’t read the book yet, but I was so confused (maybe they explained this in a scene and I zoned out) but what was the skeleton sign things with the random numbers on it? I forgot what they said and what it meant also who made them? That’s what I was thinking about the whole movie and it was driving me insane

The professor was the one who made those signs and I believe they were put there as markers so you don’t get lost. Certain markers told you how long it would take to get back to the coop. I don’t remember how many they were but I forms a circle

While I was able to predict the ending of the book, I actually liked the book. It’s short enough that I read it in a day or two. I do agree on the characters being paper thin. The book reads as though it was meant to be a script/movie. Haven’t seen the movie so not sure how that compares. While I enjoyed the book, didn’t really make me want to rush to theaters to see it. Parts of it remind me of that Tv show From. Anyways, didn’t hate it, didn’t absolutely love it either. AM Shine, the writer has a sequel coming out in the fall, curious where that takes things. In the mean time, I decided to check out his other book “Creeper”

Haha I just got to the part about her bills and Utilities and so true, I was finally able to watch the movie for the first time a couple days ago and I found that as the most unbelievable part of both the book and the movie. I thought the book was "ok" and the movie "meh" a step down from a mediocre book. Nice comparison video though!

I have seen so much hate for this movie but I liked it, I didn't think it was that bad. My complaint is that the movie should have been about 15 minutes shorter and it should have definitely ended as soon as they found out the twist. the final stuff was unnecessary and it felt like they just wanted to give it a happy ending when it didn't need it.

The Madeline twist was so obvious as soon as they found the video I scared my cats yelling at it 😂 Did they call her Ciara as "Kee-arr-uh" in the movie? The book's set in Ireland so she's Ciara as "Kee-ra". The audiobook pronounces it that way too. I think that would just drive me bonkers on top of all the issues the book had, and it does sound like the movie compounds the worst of them. Thanks so much for the comparison and reviews!

Great reveiw! I've only seen the movie but I see now the books rationale wasn't better. I like folk horror but this was so dumb to me. Great point about Kiara's husband dying and having to explain that away. There were a bunch of things that made no sense and fustrated me through the movie. I like the concept, but the final execution sucked. They should've done their own thing in the movie. I don't understand why Daniel would believe that was Kiara's husband when they had already seen that they could impersonate them. I thought a way more cool ending or concept would be them believing they got out the forrest and the bus which randomly appeared took them back to the forrest like all the watchers imitated civilians that wouldve been creepy and they would be stuck forever. They got out the forrest way too easily, and it annoyed me that they were just strolling through. Then it could've been a big reveal that one was a halfling but I think the movie would've ended too soon. A detail that I haven't seen be explained is this reality show that kept playing in the background. I thought rather than imitation of people or maybe in addition to imitating people it would hit on the idea of being a spectator more so poking fun at society how we watch reality shows and the downside of those type shows. I think the nights in the coup shouldve have been shown more. Maybe more of all of them turning on each other and the risk being higher until they accidentally found the the hideaway. Daniel should have died at the hands of one of them that wouldve been more impactful. Maybe have the watchers be obsessed with Mina give her special treatment so everyone else get jealous and then framed it like watchers being so obsessed with her that they try to get into the coupe to get her out specifically and that causes them to find the hideaway. I am rewriting the story at this point but their were many better ways they could've adjusted the story to execute the concept better. I think they could've left the backstory behind the watchers ambiguous that wouldve made it scarier and more intriguing.

Yeah I agree we should have seen more about their life before finding the bunker. That reality tv show wasn't in the book but you are right about what it could have been trying to message with them watching it. But it wasn't well executed at all. I think that would have been interesting too to see them unraveling and turning against each other! The movie never felt claustrophobic, but during their nights in that small space together we should have been getting that vibe.

Also, I didn't read the book but I knew from very early on in the movie that something was off about Madeliene. The little hints and clues were very obvious to me. I did also think something was off about Daniel as well, and maybe there was mentally, but now I don't know if his scowling and weird demeanor were intentional or bad acting.
