You are right that Hiram himself was not the interest for me initially, but the women. I kept feeling like it was dragging, but sooo got into it towards the end. You hit the nail on the head with the women characters. Every time a story was told about the background of the women etc. I was warped in, then would check out during Hirams portions... which I lean to think was intentional 🤔. So much to discuss and said.... too much to dissect via comment but this was such a good review!

lol yes the woman carried this story. It's the perfect book club pick because there are a lot of things to talk about. Thanks for watching!

Years, later when Hiram almost drowns in a river that same power saves his life. This brush with death births an urgency in Hiram and a daring scheme: to escape from the only home he's ever known. So, begins an unexpected journey. A book selected by Opra per the lecturer....A good book based on survival...

I loved this book. I was able to connect to Hiram immediately and understood him, maybe because I've read quite a bit of nonfiction about slavery. Thanks for this video.

Audiobook made me love this, I can see how hard it can be to read in hand. In the form of audio, its quite amazing.

I loved this book and have told my friends about it. The quiet fortitude of Hiram taught me a lot, I think his character is very strong from the start.

I am currently reading this (ch4). It's hard for me to get into the story but maybe I just need to continue to take it slow and hopefully soon I can have that "oh I want to read more" mood because right now after one chapter I am exhausted since its a lot to take in

It was a commitment for me because I did care for the beginning. I'm glad it all came full circle and made sense in the end. Hang in there!

That's how I am, currently, I am on pg 100, do not know what chapter it is and I am about to give up. I am trying to find some motivation to finish this book, but I have not gotten any, and it is not because it has slavery in it, it because I am having a hard time relating to the Protagonist.

I read the book and finished it last week. I can honestly say that it didn’t touch me like I thought it would. I feel like the women were the best characters in the book, especially Miss Thena. I could’ve been okay without Hiriam. I didn’t start to like the book until later on. I gave the book a 3.5.

I am 25 pages from the ending and I have thought the entire time that this book should have been told from 3 different perspectives: Sophia, Thena, and Corrine’s. It’s a shame because I love all of Coates other works non-fiction and his time with Marvel comics.

I'm about 40 % through the this book, but I have to switch from an audiobook to print version. I love the audiobook, the narrator is great and its produced magnificently (his singing is a great bonus!). But I have to go back regularly for something I've missed, and that is proving too much of a problem. I don't know if the fault is in my concentration, the fact that English is not my native language or if this is just such a complex book that I would appreciate it more in print. This should be enjoyed in larger chunks, but at the moment my audiobook listening time is divided into small snippets, and it's just not working. But I'm loving the book so far.

Finally finished this book after forcing myself. I don't think novel writing is the author's strong suit because the story structure was quite lacking. Great sentences, though.

I was kind of excited for this until I learned more about what it was about. It sounds too depressing for me. Nevertheless, I think my library book group could possibly be reading this. It was one of our options to vote on...so maybe I will read it if it gets picked. :/ Thanks for this review! 😊✨✨ Love you!💕💕💕 Happy Wednesday! ☺️✨✨ Happy Reading! 🤓📚✨

The story should have been told from the viewpoint of a woman. My humble opinion. I understood better at the end why the main character felt boring or why i didnt connect with him, but it was a *struggle* to get there. I feel like I would have understood better if I could *feel* Hiram's frustration more.

I agree...the women carried the story, so the book would have been much from their viewpoint. Thanks for watching!
