'It was 11pm when I checked my email for the last time and turned off my phone for what I hoped would be forever.'
No running water, no car, no electricity or any of the things it powers: the internet, phone, washing machine, radio or light bulb. Just a wooden cabin, on a smallholding, by the edge of a stand of spruce.
In this honest and lyrical account of a remarkable life without modern technology, Mark Boyle explores the hard won joys of building a home with his bare hands, learning to make fire, collecting water from the spring, foraging and fishing.
What he finds is an elemental life, one governed by the rhythms of the sun and seasons, where life and death dance in a primal landscape of blood, wood, muck, water, and fire - much the same life we have lived for most of our time on earth. Revisiting it brings a deep insight into what it means to be human at a time when the boundaries between man and machine are blurring.

This book has changed my life. I’m so glad I picked it up, still being young in years. It has helped me make choices about my future and what I am advocating for. It’s especially close to my heart as an Irishwoman. Mark will never see this, but I have to say his respect for the world and his perspective of our place within life on earth is truly refreshing, grounding and instinctive all at once. Thank you for writing this and sharing your wisdom and experience, and the wisdom and experience of the locals around you (including- no, ESPECIALLY- the flora and fauna’s).

Does anyone know why he stopped being vegan? He used to be back in his days of being fully moneyless

Matt Bidault what I meant was why didn’t he continue to eat a fully plant based diet, growing food in his land? He used to eat fully plant based when he lived in the caravan being moneyless and even abstained from using leather (for ethical reasons) so I just wondered why the sudden change to now having chickens and fishing

@@mariavariola2318 Living on a fully plant based diet from the British isles would leave you with out access to things like bananas, avocados and macca powder - very soon rendering you too weak to carry out the type of life needed to live sustainably :(

@@ethelenefresh1625 nobody needs avocados for survival. People in Asia have lived healthy without avocados for centuries.
