This film captures something about a long trail and friendships that can develop during that experience. Love this film. I never saw this film as a gritty how-to about the Camino. The movie got some privileges that most people don’t get.

There was recently an interview in NPR (Fresh Air) that interviewed both Martin Sheen and his real son, Emilio Estevez about this movie. They have Gallegos ancestry and had always wanted to walk the caminos, so they, the rest of the cast, and the crew all actually walked the caminos. They said the only actors were people with speaking parts. They also said they tried to keep everything on the down low, so they hid a lot of sound equipment and such in the packs. That is a possible reason for the super full packs.

I was on the Camino while you were on the PCT. I watched your AT while getting ready to go to Spain. Watching you every night as I crossed Spain while you were out west.. My Camino Frances was MUCH different than your experience, (as everyone's is different). Other than the theft of his pack, I experienced everything depicted in the movie. I met numerous people that tented regularly, I slept out one night in my bedroll. In April, many people carry bedrolls. I partied with the locals, I laughed a lot, I cried a lot, I got very cold, I hiked in heat. I did 7 mile day, I did 28 mile day. The people were everything!!! Stayed exclusively in Muni's and Donativo's except 2 nights of head cold in a Pensionado. Had to get a reservation ONCE. Never taxied or shipped my bag. My tramily was FANTASTIC! As good or better than the movie. I was watching you every night thinking how much different it would seem to you as a thru-hiker. Sorry to say, but watching you're Camino with Montana I kept thinking "She's not getting it"... I know I've never had your experiences in REAL thru-hikes but hope you realize that the Camino can be much different than your trip. Buen Camino, BeeBob

My favorite quote from the movie is when Martin Sheen is talking to the first Albergue attendant and he asks her "Have you ever walked the Camino señora?" And she replies, "No. When I was younger I had no time, and now that I'm older I'm too tired." This quote is directly pulled from the book that the movie is inspired by!

Like Montana suggested, a bedroll on a pack helps symbolise that someone is a hiker for movies or TV - much like the iconic French stick of bread in groceries.

That's the old dormitory in Roncesvalles, which was renovated I guess 7-10 years ago. The even older one than that back in the 1990s was the one I liked myself, though I've never slept in the new one so : ?? You did very often see packs that size & larger back when this film was made, and sleeping pads too -- and they were more necessary then than they are usually today, though in this Covid19 year they have become essentials again ; though maybe an inflatable mattress instead of a pad. People did use to carry their bags on the outside in those days, but nowadays people usually carry them inside their backpacks ; or not at all (which I think is a mistake). That pack looks stuffed, but it's actually pretty small, so looks like she's carrying about the right amount of kit. Sleeping outside on the Francès used to happen a lot more frequently than it does now -- though again, this Covid19 year will be unusual in that regard too. As for the marijuana, it's mostly the Spanish locals, rarely the pilgrims -- most of the pilgrims don't even smoke tobacco, and it was rare to see a pilgrim smoking even back in the 1990s. But the wine and beer are pervasive !!! I always wear jeans -- but they've become rare since the 2000s. OTOH you do now occasionally see pilgrims wearing a suit & tie or a dress, which never happened back in the day ... washing your jeans isn't that complicated, but you need to choose a blazing hot day for it and get in to the albergue early so they can dry properly. Probably avoid doing it in a brand new pair though ... Really, most people carried bedrolls before 2010 when this was made. Europeans aren't that much anti-American nowadays -- some of them might be unhappy with the USA, but usually even in these cases that won't translate into bad feelings against American people ; loud & entitled tourists maybe, but then that's for all nationalities. Besides, on the Camino it's even more rare than rare. The mound at the Cruz de Ferro is on old Roman waymarker, so it's about 2000 years old. Most of these waymarkers have collapsed or been dismantled ; and of the ones that haven't, they're unremarkable 2 to 3 foot high piles of rocks (though the main Roman roads had a different kind of waymarker). But local shepherds/cowherds started carrying rocks from out of their fields and pastures to clear them out, and dumping them on top of this particular waymarker, back in the Middle Ages, and then started asking pilgrims to help with the task -- which then became a pilgrim tradition in its own right. Sometimes back in the old days, you could just arrive and get your Compostela sorted in five minutes ; but you needed to be pretty lucky and walking in a non Holy Year. But that's doubtful in 2010 when this was made. I can remember a short queue in the stairs of the old old pilgrim office in 1993 ; no queue at all in 1994 ; avoiding the queue in 2005 at the old pilgrim office by going in at lunchtime (would not work nowadays, but maybe it still did in 2010) ; and definitely needing to queue in 2014, unless all you wanted was a stamp on your credencial if you were carrying on past Santiago or back from there. I guess if you just needed a credencial too. I've started three times from my front door, including once from Paris. I always tell people it's a good idea to start from at least a little farther away than SJPP -- places like Lourdes, Bordeaux, Agen and so on are better starting spots IMO than Saint Jean. It's good to get a few days hiking in before crossing that mountain, though that may be less necessary for American thru-hike veterans. But it's also good to gain some experience of what the Camino is like outside of that crowded Camino Francès. heh, there were far fewer bedbugs 10+ years ago

As a local spanish pilgrim in 2018 and 2019 I never smoked marijuana or the people with whom I am making the journey. Smoking, drinking, taking drugs or playing money is global and not local. Along the Camino, all that is residual, I think. You are right about anti-Americanism, here in Europe and on the Camino in particular we see with great sympathy the people who come from so far to visit us, whether they are Americans, Koreans, New Zealanders, Australians, etc. we are feeling a global community doing the same thing. ; )

My first two weeks I used for conditioning. With my luck, after eating rich food (jamon 🙄) and ate everything in sight, I had a gout flare after Pamplona. I had two choices, quit while in pain or keep walking with the same pain. I wouldn't suggest it, but the Marine in me kept me going. It took almost 2 weeks to heal from the pain, but by that time, my body was already accustomed to the routine. I took my time and walked slowly. Sometimes I'd only do 5-8 miles, depending on what my body was telling me. Before I knew it, I was walking at least 20 miles a day, did one overnight, 35 miler before Sahagun. Walk slowly and enjoy the view. Don't forget to look back, sometimes the best view is behind you. Buen Camino ✊🏽

I have a knee injury which is 'gout-like' but not really gout. . . . don't ask, I do not understand the medical mind. What I did research were cures for gout. The swelling and pain went away when I started drinking lime juice. I recommend a lime squeezed into a glass of water, once in the morning and once in the evening. I got the idea from a Times of India article from 2008. Worked for me. The USA limes are half the size of the asian limes, so two limes.

I walked the Camino in September 2017 and I would say that I am not the fittest of people. The first days in the Pyrenees were tough but the camaraderie pulled me up and down the mountains. I went alone but most of the time found it quite difficult to be alone on the 'French Way' (the route that they take in the film). Just like in the film, people find others to walk with if they want to (their 'Camino family). All that to say if you want to do it, go for it, there are all ages and abilities. You could even do it in parts and go back to where you finished the time before and finish it that way.

El Camino de Santiago starts the moment you leave your house! It starts with the state of mind you have at the moment you leave your house to the Camino, towards Santiago de Compostela. That's the reason people say they started in Canada, Japan, Brazil, California, Portugal, Paris, Pamplona, Madrid, etc. The Camino has changed a lot since I first did it in 2005. There are many more people on the Camino, it is too congested in the Albergues and too many people do it as an adventure, a challenge, and they do not take it seriously until they start having problems either physically or other kind of problems. You do need to be mentally prepared to do the Camino even if you have done it before because not all the Caminos are the same also because your body is not the same, your body condition changes as one ages. I know of people who died doing the Camino, collapsed, had a stroke, or some kind of injury and had to drop out. Your comintment, and physical fitness are very important to do any Camino or pilgrimage! Being fit means being healthy too if you want to complete the Camino. Buen Camino to all Peregrinos!

But I had my 1-P tent with me, which I never used though we slept outside 1st 2 nights. I had a sun umbrella which was super helpful since it was June & it’s cray hot there then. What a fun review, Thank you! I agree that the backpacks were probably a “production prop” type thing but yes, seems to be a great movie! A Highschool classmate of mine from Germany has been doing the Camino in sections for the last 5 years and he started at his front door 😁🇩🇪 and he got to LePuy last year 👍🏼😁

Starting at your front door sounds so exciting! I want to try it from my home in Belgium. If possible as a thru hike! About 2300 km or 1600miles... 😀

I enjoyed the movie, The Way, and your review of it. I had been waiting to see your review since I saw Dos Chicas that you did last year. I think that as more serious through hikers walk the Camino, the minimalist ethic that you have to have to through hike the PCT translates into the Camino and to bring less. But now, I read below that with the re-opening Spain, things like blankets aren't going to be available and bringing your own sleeping bag and pad may become more popular. I'm going to find out as I intend to walk the Camino de Levante next year.

There are more than one places to sleep in rocesvalles. Some folks slept outside but two of them got vomiting. Never saw drugs but i drank for 29 out of 30 days, irish but like at home im not much of a drinker on the camino it was very social. US folks were good fun, a mix of people all interesting i was blessed to meet them an expression two of them said something you dont hear at home. I walked 70 km on the last day cause i didnt want to walk it when busy in the morning. 6.00 to 9.15. i wish id just got up and walked the next day, the way is whats imortant not the destination. You can walk alone but you rarely are even if you want to be. Trail shoes not boots, Teva sandals worth having also.

I found this channel by watching your reviews of Wild and A Walk in the Woods. I'm so glad you did the Way too. I loved it so much I bought the DVD. Love the other stuff you do too and I'm now working through your AT trek. Interesting to get a US view of trekking, very different from the UK/European approach and the equipment brands are mostly different too of course. Good stuff.

The Camino started with the King of Asturias, in the Primitivo way (Oviedo) From there are several routes that came after. Origin as the first Camino Jacobeo (Camino de Santiago). Spanish king Alfonso II was the first pilgrim to Santiago de Compostela, he walked the Camino in the IX century to commemorate the discovery of the remains of apostle St. James in Compostela a couple of years earlier. At that time most of the Spanish territory was under Moorish control, only the Northern part of Spain remained independent.

I love that movie! I’ve seen it several times. So many layers to it. There are some interesting behind-the-scenes stories I’ve read about the making of the movie, as well.

Years ago our friends brought the movie over for us to watch. We had never heard of El Camino de Santiago prior to that. My wife and I joked about walking it and 2 years later we embarked on our first pilgrimage.

I liked the movie. Ive been all over Europe with a backpack but never with a real destination. I hope to walk the Camino someday. I'd like to get to Europe on a boat and do the whole trip without flying. Congratulations on another good trip.

Hi, i have met many individuals from many countries, especially when travelling in my late teens. The thing that always struck me was the similarities between people no matter where they were from. I more often than not found my expectations based upon preconceptions and generalisations were more like caricatures than reality. That’s not say some of those traits were not exhibited but more often than not they were small echoes rather than in your face. It helps I suppose that many of the people I met were of a like mind and on their own journeys.

Thanks Dixie and Montana. On the Camino now staying at an albergue 2 km out from the cross where people bring there rocks. You guys were right on in everything you said. I have seen some big backpacks out here but nothing quite like they showed. Can’t figure out what people would be carrying in them.

The movie, The Way. is what got my attention, of walking the way of St. James. I've viewed just about every video ever made about the way of St. James. Yours is in the top 5. But, my two knees and one hip replacement have got in the way of me walking the way. Lol. I now must receive a second hip replacement soon before I get on my way... Or watch about a hundred more videos of other people's way.

Hey! I would love to hear your thoughts on "Southbounders." It is Indie and low-budget, but it is so accurate of the AT!
