7:15 Ouch, I quit after one week and felt like quite a loser. I made the really common mistake of overdoing it, my knees are still giving me trouble a year later. I hated that I had to quit, and I hated even more that I was happy to go home. I blame my little old dog for that eagerness to get back home. The way I thought about it was, I'm missing 6+ months of her few remaining years being in pain, drenched and crying on a mountain (my knees were in so much pain the day before I left omg). I didn't see as now being worth it. I hope to one day try again. Thanks for the video Dixie!

I am a new subscriber, as I checked out one of your videos, which was recommended to me, where you reviewed the movie, "Wild," and gave feedback about thru-hiking the PCT. Wild's story affected me, because I've been struggling with grief over the loss of someone who raised me and had been the only stability I had ever known. I loved her so immensely, and I am 4 years out from her death, and I'm still grieving. I write as a hobby and sometimes for pay, but I can't seem to find the words to right that are cathartic to me. THANK YOU for your comments about age in this video. I am in my late 40s, and I've not done anything about my deep desire to hike the Appalachian Trail. The thing I am quite worried about is wondering what type of danger may be lurking if one has to hitch to a nearby town for supplies or to receive packages. I just could not get into a stranger's vehicle. I bought McDonald's for a group of 4 young men hiking the AT, who had come off the trail in Gatlinburg, TN, where I lived at that point. Anyway, is my worry about danger as a solo female hiker, for the most part, baseless? Lastly, how many venomous snakes did you come across? Thank you for taking the time to inform so honestly and thoroughly. I look forward to watching more of your videos!

I enjoyed the book and the movie, both were very funny. I could really relate to Redford's character when he is climbing out of his tent in one scene, and is having a hard time getting out and standing up. (Dixie did not show it here.) When I was doing the JMT, and a fellow saw me trying to get out of my tent in the morning, he said - oh, you get up like an older person. I said yes, like a cow, back legs first. I have a bad knee, so I cannot kneel or crouch. I was 67 at that time. I would imagine that back in the 1990s, there would have been a lot fewer people on the trail, thus as big of a trembly life style. Thanks for the review. I will go back and watch it again.

Re: Your intro. Bill Bryson is from Iowa. He backpacked Europe with, surprisingly, Katz. He met his future wife in England and stayed there and married her. Four kids later he moved his family back to the US (Hanover, NH) and decided to hike the AT (he is a writer and writes hilarious stories about his past experiences). The only reason that he hiked with Katz a second time was that he couldn't find anyone else willing to hike with him. The movie does not follow the true story. The book is better (IMO than the movie for many reasons). In (2003 according to Wikipedia) he moved back to England. Bryson Is one of my favorite writers (I read A Walk in the Woods when it first came out 1998. It was a "featured" book in a book store recommended by an employee and I like to read travel books mostly). Bryson drew my attention to the AT (I've known about it since the 1980's and camped in Baxter all during the 90's and later years). But, what really got my attention to it was thru hikers, like you, who thru hiked it and made KZbin videos. For anyone that likes to read and enjoys travel books I highly recommend any of his books. The one about Australia is extremely funny.

My pack's got a built-in rain cover and I've never used it. I line the pack *and* double-bag anything mission-critical or water-averse inside that for good measure. Watched the movie and read the book. Enjoyed both, but the movie doesn't come close to doing the book justice. Dixie, your excitement at the scene of other hikers getting ready to go is infectious! Love it. I'm a weekend/short stay camper, personally. Though have often thought about Te Araroa that passes not too far from my house - met a number of Te Araroa hikers at one of the motorcamps in Whanganui a few years ago (up until then, I had no idea we even had Te Araroa trail). I don't use trekking poles _per se_ but I have a long hiking stick/"3rd leg" which is invaluable for bracing myself on steep descents or when fording swift rivers. It's long enough that I can extend my reach to give 3 points of contact under some of the worst conditions.

I hiked the AT in '96. I started March 18th and it was a very snowy, rainy, cold spring. Almost all hiker wore boots. The most popular pack was the Dana Designs Terraplane (approx 7 pounds), very few people had down sleeping bags, I only met one couple that had trekking poles, and the most popular tent was the sierra designs clip flashlight. Most people wore soccer shorts as they were the only quick drying option. Thermarests had come out and became very popular. Even back then there were approx 2000 people hiking the trail and shelters were full and camping around them was packed as well.

Whitney in the Sierras. Sure, no problem. We got a one day trail pass, and began at 4 am. 8 hours later I was only at mile 8 of the 11 miles to the summit, and only at 12,500 feet in elevation. I decided that there was no way I could finish the climb, and be in any condition to return back down the trail to the car in the allotted 24 hours. And, even if I could have forced the summit, I firmly believe that I would be in extreme danger of falling off the trail due to exhaustion. I quit. 8 hours later we were back at the car. Next year we are going to try for a 2 or 3 day pass, and climb that damn thing again. Never say never, but one doesn't want to die of "stupid".

Thank you, your videos are entertaining and a great way to unwind...I've been dealing with harrassment, and psychological abuse. I'm going to share my story for all to hear soon

Your excitement about the start of the trail makes me think that you should do the AT again!

Nice to get a reaction about the movie from someone who's actually made the hike. Thank you! Having read the book long before they made it into a movie I really didn't expect it to live up to Bill's account of his adventure. Might give it a try knowing someone with experience didn't find it too ridiculous.

I know this video is now a year old, but I am just seeing it. To answer your question, the gear depicted in the movie is typical for the backpacking gear from the mid-'90s. I was an avid camper and hiker my whole life and started backpacking in 1993. I managed a store in Washington DC in 1991-1992 that sold outdoor gear and internal frame packs were already more popular than externals, though some people had to be sold on the idea because internals were relatively new and not what most people thought of as backpacks. I was completely sold on the idea of backpacking after reading Colin Fletcher's book The Complete Walker III and have been on dozens of trips since then, although I have never done a through-hike.

Great video idea! Brilliant perspectives. I enjoyed both books and movies (especially the Walk book, LOL) but always thought it was odd that both hikers didn't complete their thru hikes and are the most famous. Hope you do The Way for the Camino too! And hope they make a movie about you one day!

I’m not a through hiker, but I’m a really avid hiker of the trails in the SNP more often then not the AT. I’ve always loved the Bryson book but a fact that I find the most amazing and telling about how much the environment has improved since 1996 and today is that Bryson said that for all the miles he was on the trail, he never saw a black bear. That’s crazy to me. I see them probably every 3rd or 4th time I’m out training. Makes me happy to know that wildlife is thriving a bit more. Also, I LOVE the book, but to be honest the movie didn’t quite do it for me. The book is a humorous look at approaching middle age. The movie shifted that to basically being about becoming old. I mean it was a good try and all of those actors are fantastic but even like the soundtrack didn’t capture my feeling from the book.

I live in Northwest Georgia. I've been thru those arches behind the visitors center many times and not given it much thought. It dawned on me watching this video that, for some people, it may be a one time thing and holds a special meaning. I'll think about that the next time I'm there. If the good Lord let's me get back there. Each section hike I've done is on my heart. ❤AT.

I read the book, never watched the movie. Book is hilarious. A must read. I had a big grin on my face just listening to you re-live your AT experience while you critiqued the movie. Bravo. Let's have a party when you hit 300K subscribers

I'm so glad you're okay. I was working from home and looking through the new uploads and only this registered in my mind at first; :Appalachian Trail Thru-hiker Breaks Down" lol

You mentioned how they rarely stayed in shelters. In the 90s there were much less shelters. When the weather was inclimate in the book they barely had room and sometimes really didn't have room.

Thank you Dixie, I thoroughly enjoyed this! Reading A Walkmin the Woods was the first time I'd ever heard of the AT and I first watched the movie long before I started watching lots of hiking videos like yours so it was really interesting to see how many real places featured in the film!

Dixie, I’d enjoy your take on ‘The Way’ as it looks like I’m going to get to do the Camino in August. Also plan to begin the AT next March. Hope to post videos on my channel too. Thanks again, Monk

Dixie recently completed "The Way" with her younger sister Montana last year. Check out her videos from the not too far back. She made a short movie about her journey as well. She did a great job.

"The Way" is IMHO the best backpacking/hiking movie ever. I don't just watch it-I get emotional with the characters and experience it

Homemade Wanderlust Dixie: The peanut galleries of the world are full of nay-sayers. Most probably are well-meaning, but some are just predisposed to taking the wind out of other people's sails - energy vampires, as it were. 8:06 maybe that percentage is low in part because people find what they're looking for ahead of reaching the terminus. Maybe for some, the goal isn't so much about the end as it is the journey. We enjoyed the movie. Good to know that they took some care to show a few actual locations, and not strictly 2nd unit B-roll stuff. Thanks for sharing your take on "A Walk In The Woods." Be well, stay safe, and Happy Trails.
