Amazing to hear someone get into Stormlight! Welcome to a whole new world - and I weigh my words. By book five, Sanderson has woven so much of this world into his story that you feel like you know it intimately, like it's right there, that you could visit it yourself someday and feel at home. I completely understand what you say about Szeth. He is one of the characters it is most difficult to relate with: that is, in fact, part of who he is. Someone frustratingly unrelatable. Needless to say, it a bit more complex than "wanton murderer hiding behind his culture for justification". He truly does not want to kill. He truly wants someone to kill him. He truly cannot disobey he who holds the oathstone - it would, in a way, break him. I won't say more, except that the beauty of this series is that by its end, you form an understanding of even the darkest and most inscrutable character. :) I recommend reading a couple other Sandersons between the Stormlight novels, by the way. On top of the two novellas (Edgedancer, between books 2 and 3 ; and Dawnshard, between 3 and 4) that are specifically set in Roshar. Maybe give one-offs like Tress of the Emerald Sea, Elantris, Warbreaker, or Yumi and the Nightmare Painter a try between the books. It'll help you slowly form an understanding of how Sanderson approaches his worlds. Plus they're great stories. Again, I won't say more PS: None of these are necessary per se... But it's how Sanderson himself recommends one reads his work - and i have to say i agree ;)

I figured that would be the case for Szeth as the series progresses! I have Tress on my bookshelf and will definitely check out those novellas, thank you 😊

Sounds interesting; you speak about it well. I really enjoyed this sort of thing at one time, but since hitting middle age, I just haven't been able/willing to invest time in these massive series. I got drawn into that Malazan thing, but that was probably over a decade ago now. I've pretty much stuck with standalones (or occasionally trilogies if the books aren't cinder blocks) since then, and unfortunately, that seems to limit options somewhat with newer fantasy. Glad you're enjoying it though. It's cool to hear your enthusiasm for the book. Have a nice weekend!

I get that, these series are massive undertakings and there are just so many books out there that committing to just one story for so long is a big deal. Thank you and I hope you have a great weekend as well!

I loved my time with the Stormlight Archives. Huge chonkers, but he's a very good writer. :) I decided to stop midway through the series for personal reasons and ended up selling all five of the books along with the novellas. Hope you enjoy the journey, Dillon! :)

It depends on how WOT goes. I'm not a fantasy guy. I'm going outside my comfort zone.

That’s good! I’m going to try to expand my genres this year but it’s so easy to stay in that comfort zone

I just started reading some fantasy about 3 or 4 years ago and some of it was really enjoyable.
