nice one!...from 1982 life....now 2024 here watching!!! this is a gem of our culture. Hopefully, the next generations of the Doce Pares training grounds are awake and active within our society....(am not yet searching the latest ones here in YT as of this moment). Salute to all the grandmasters of those era!

Out if all the arts I studied, hands down I've found the FMA to be the most effective, most engaging, and most fun regardless of age, gender, or even level of conditioning. It's the one system that seems to have it all. Weapons, empty hands, stand up joint locking and throwing, and you practice these techniques simultaneously without even realizing it, until it's revealed to you.

CANT believe I'm looking at this! How cool is KZbin!!!??? I learned Doce Pares from Sifu Mitchell who was connected with Dong Cuesta back in the eighties, and Sifu Mitchell was also affiliated with PFS under Paul Vunak, who may be one of the students in the Inosanto segment. Just to see the Canete family demonstrate right down to the old grandmaster, is unreal.

FMA are tremendously fun to do with music unlike other arts(with the exception of boxing I guess) it's also one of the few systems where one real can "find their own style" within it's framework. Practicing the art also enables one to unlock a d decode movement concepts central to all weapons based arts. It's kinda lime being an accomplished dancer. Once you know the fundamental techniques, you can pretty much, comparatively speaking, learn any other dance.

I always loved the spiel from 9:21 to 10:11 because it feels like a subtle jab from SGM Cacoy Cañete to practitioners of the Balintawak style, famed rivals of the Doce Pares Club known for their signature Agak, or Play, which is a one for one block and counter drill. As a Balintawak practitioner myself, it's a fun reminder of the development of FMA systems in relation with one another. Much respect to SGM Cacoy and the many other Eskrima masters of the past.

Arnis, ( Escrima or Kali ) is an art within the arts and the stick though a formidable weapon represents the knife the sword and is easily transferred to empty hand. I've been studying Modern Arnis and Arnis De Leon for over 10 years. it is a great martial art whose applications are quite complex but once learned is devastating to opponents.

Funny you say that. The stick is way faster than the bolo or machete which is why the Spanish and Japanese had such a hard time with the Filipinos. A good eskrimadore could do 3 strikes and a disarm in the time it took the enemy to strike once. More than one of my teachers had a WWII sword in their family from a relative disarming a Japanese soldier. Filipinos tear shit up with or without a blade, but it is cool with bolos too.
@antondelacruz93623 жыл бұрын
@@teofeo333 dude the spaniards went up against filipinos who used swords spears shields and sharpened sticks. Arnis / eskrima is spanish influenced and theres no historical evidence of it used to fight spaniards. As for being fast, that depends on the length of the weapon. During the japanese occupation there was afaik no industry or need for making standard 28" sticks. I also had a relative who had a katana but he didnt disarm somebody for it- he and other guerillas ambushed and killed small groups of japanese troops and they took their weapons. It wouldve made no sense to just disarm a guy and take his weapon. Just kill him then take it.

I agree. I trained now for 31 years, and never was in a fight. I was provoqued several times, but always was able to talk my wy out of it. Martial arts are as effective as the practicioner. A completely "untrained" streetfighter can overcome an experienced martial artist. I have met many down to earth and humble martial artists. I also have met boisterous and arrogand ones. Those are the ones who eventually wind up in the hospital. I teach that martial arts are about avoiding conflict.
@dailyviewstv53233 жыл бұрын
In Philippines or ASIAN countries, before master teach you, they give a rules or discipline lesson to know, This are: 1.Don't provoke fight, better keep your skill secret to avoid people test you or they will use any weapon(even gun) because, they know your skill. 2.Be calm in everything, there is provoking fight against you, and the last but the best is, 3. "Your skill must be for self defense and friendly tournament" that the reason why Filipinos or Asian respect their opponent before and after the tournament fight.. Unlike American/Eropean Martial artist or boxers, mocking their enemy before and after the game..

5:30 Very true! It's actually the scariest thing about Filipino culture. No matter how good as a person you are, when local thugs or even your drunk neighbors, knew you can fight well. They will most likely challenge you to a fight to prove that they are more badass and you are nothing. Hence, in the past, Filipino Martial Arts are practiced in secret and taught within family circles. It was better that way to avoid "mapasubo" or getting yourself involved in do or die situations where it's either you die or you go to jail.

I seriously don't understand how Eskrima isn't a well-known martial art here in Philippines current time. I live in Manila and I've only known about this a couple of days ago. ( Because I was curious about other fighting styles, and wondered if Philippines even had one originally made ) This makes me so freaking proud to be a Filipino! Once I finish Muay Thai I will definitely take up Eskrima next, probably move to Cebu or something -if I can-. Just to study this beautiful form of fighting style.
@donitobawaran853211 жыл бұрын
Its actually well known in our country man... schools in the Philippines actually have eskrima or arnis in the curriculum.
@RiyutheGreat11 жыл бұрын
Donito Bawaran Is it really? I've never heard of other schools teaching Eskrima though, is it a part of their P.E. or something? Will you please put at least one school that has Eskrima in their curriculum? Because seriously, I don't know man. For me, it doesn't sound popular enough to other Filipinos, most people I even ask nor talk to about it have no clue nor idea about it.
@donitobawaran853211 жыл бұрын
RiyutheGreat Yes, in PE...1.Saint Louis University (in their high school dept. PE 2nd year/ Varsity for college level students), 2. University of the Cordilleras (Varsity), 3.Baguio City National High School (2nd Year PE), 4. Science foundation (2nd year PE), 5. Philippine Military Academy, etc... and word of advice man, if you want to try eskrima, try training with your school's varsity (if you have a varsity for combat sports, and I'M SURE you have it n your school), you would be used to sparing and you would be more exposed to tournaments without it affecting your schedule in school....
@donitobawaran853211 жыл бұрын
BTW, if you watched the video, it even says "the fighting art Eskrima is fast becoming the NATIONAL SPORT of the Philippines" 0:28... so basically, its getting more and more popular here... but I see your point, and i have to admit, you were right at one point, its not that popular here in the Philippines. Unlike Judo in Japan or Kung Fu in China...

@JSRLPadre10 жыл бұрын
"Arnis" is a corruption of Spanish "Arnes" which literally translates into "Harness", but was more colloquially associated with armor, as in what the richer members of the conquistadores wore onto the field. Escrima/Eskrima is a Tagalog transliteration of "Esgrima", Spanish for Fencing, and was first associated with the native arts by Franciscan monks documenting the Spanish conquest. Kali is a short hand of two aboriginal words, "kamot" in Cebuano, or "kamay" in Tagalog - "Hand", and "Lihok" - "Motion." Thus, "Hand Motion". The term, Kali, as I understand it, was popularized by GM Floro Villabrille. As for one vs two sticks, it depends on the specific school's training method. Some, but not all the schools I've touched base with regard dual weapon training as a lead in to hand-to-hand training. In a way, the main differences between weapons and mitts are that weapons offer longer reach and slimmer margins for error.

no martial art is the best , true but there are martial arts geared better for self defense and some geared better for sport or performance arts. I believe that it is maybe not the art but the intensity of the training and skill of the teacher/coach. also accepting challenges whether it be in sport , friendly sparring or life and death situations you should be able to demonstrate what you say you practice.

I wish this Filipino Martial Art will continue and grow as wild same with other discipline likes Judo, Karate and Taekwondo. And be part of the regular events in the Olympics or at least in the ASIAN games (different from SEA games). But the main issue is MOST Pinoys are not interested to learn this fighting art nor knowing it. Filipinos are addicted in Basketball. The government should focus and spend lots of money for this. I'm an Eskrima-Kali-Arnis fighter, instructor and trainer since 1994. Also I'm a former member of the Philippine ARMY Arnis Team 👊🥋🥇
