The most memorable thing about Thorpedo for me is the smoothness of his stroke. It didn’t look like he was going fast at all because his strike was so calm. Meanwhile he’s in first and everyone else is flailing their arms and kicking furiously.

Amazing. However it's mostly anatomy I'd say. I mean, it's natural, not something you look for. I, say, in my teens was a decent semipro swimmer, and for franticly as i pushed in freestyle I could never be as fast as I was - effortlessly- in butterfly. I could have competed with freestylers I mean, and get at least the podium. So, yeah, it's pretty much anatomy. And yes, Thorpe's freestyle is one of the most beautiful - and effective - I've seen.

Crazy to think that Ian swam a 400m final, then on the same night anchored the 4 x 100 relay against Gary Hall Junior, who was the Caeleb Dressel of that era. Not only did he go against him, but actually beat him, a middle distance swimmer beating the best sprinter in the world after winning a 400m final not long before…. 1 word… PHENOMENAL!!!
