Wakefield and District Housing and the local NHS Trust have worked together to deliver the Mental Health Navigator Scheme for almost 10 years.
This video introduces the benefits for tenants and the housing organisation.
Many social housing tenants experience mental health issues, which can negatively impact on their tenancy and even result in eviction. A joined-up approach between mental health and housing services is needed to help maintain tenancies and secure housing stability. Wakefield District Housing (WDH) is a social housing provider who have operated a mental health navigation scheme for their tenants since 2015. Mental health professionals employed by the NHS but embedded within WDH provide specialist support to tenants, including advocacy, signposting and direct support.

Huge thanks to all tenants for sharing their stories, and to our actors John and Lisa who are also part of our public advisory group for the project.
This series of videos was funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR). It is part of a series of videos commissioned by the University of York as an output of a research study funded by the NIHR’s National Priority Area Research Programme 2020-23 via the ‘Health and Care Inequalities’ Applied Research Collaboration (ARC) Consortium.
The Consortium is led by the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration North East and Cumbria (ARC NENC) and the Applied Research Consortium Yorkshire and Humber (ARC YH).
The research study was conducted to evaluate the WDH Mental Health Navigator Scheme.
