There are all sorts of 'Weary Roads' that have to be travelled. This short film/poem is dedicated to all bike travellers that have to ride, from time to time, The Weary Road. The film footage and sound recordings are from two locations, (1) my home region of Gippsland, Victoria, Australia and (2) along The Mawson Trail, a long distance bike trail in South Australia.
A version of the poem The Weary Road was first written for a character in an unpublished screenplay I was working on with my daughter Bess. The outback setting of the story was very similar to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia. So, with a little work, I re-set the weary road there. I hope it evokes the vastness and challenges of some of the 'roads' we all must travel at times in our lives. Sometimes, we have to just keep pedalling to make it home.
I also have a three-part film series of The Mawson Trail ride, titled 'Through Ranges Sad and Beautiful' on my youtube channel. It is a story about returning to ride through the landscapes of my childhood, which I had not seen for more than 40 years. It's a great ride - about 900 kilometers starting in the outback and finishing in the stylish city of Adelaide. The Mawson is well marked and uses a variety of surfaces from single track, to rail trail, to secondary gravel roads. A brilliant Australian long distance ride. Links to the films are at the end of the 'The Weary Road'.
