The boxer was a weird story for me because i didnt know who was the protagonist And i think the author does a great job on purposely shifting that role onto other characters and make them seem like the protagonists
@_marou_
@_marou_ 2 жыл бұрын
The protagonist of the story is Yu in my perspective, yes he's seen as a villain but that doesn't make him the antagonist, the antagonist on his story are the people who tried to beat him and coach K, who deliberately manipulated the happenings around Yu to make him into the monster he became(later redeemed by J) but if you're talking about the story of each character everytime they fight, then yeah, Yu is not the protagonist but them. In the spinoff series, it's clear that Jay is the protagonist.

It’s one of the few stories that do this that I actually liked. Most of the time when they switch the perspective to show a different character I get annoyed because, “that’s not the person I care about!” Which I felt the same with boxer at first, but I fell in love with all of them instead

I don’t feel like I can express in a KZbin comment how much I enjoyed the Boxer. Like Sufferents said, this story is not about boxing. It’s about the purpose of life, trauma, death, love, and pretty much touches on everything that gives meaning to life. It’s not about hype fights (though there ARE hype fights), it’s about watching Yu discover meaning in his life. It’s about watching what gives others meaning. It was such a beautiful and well crafted story because of the characters- even people I absolutely hated I ended up understanding and loving. The author just managed to make every character’s story count and have an impact on me as the reader and that’s hard to do. Ultimately, if you’re ready to read a sports manwha that is unlike anything you’ve read before then read the Boxer. It’s my favorite manwha I’ve read (with the Horizon being a close second) and I hope that the rest of you will enjoy it as well if you haven’t already read it.

@@thedarkking32 Um, refer to my other comment on a different video where you asked me the exact same question. Once again, it’s about the emotional stakes and only the beginning fights are a one sided massacre from Yu. But you don’t have to like it. I just like stories that are heavily based in the characters and their arcs so if you aren’t into that then this won’t be your cup of tea. There are plenty of series out there that are just about people throwing hands that you can read.

The boxer has made me change my view on action webtoons, previous I thought action webtoons could only be dumb fun with one dimensional character but the boxer made me realize that just because a webtoon is based around an action premise it doesn't mean it cannot deliver an emotional punch (pun intended). This story not only gives us an badass mc but it also give us a beautiful and heartbreak story with complex character. I absolutely loved this series and its definitely one om my favorites along with the Horizon and Bastard.

It was a pleasant surprise, the euphemisms to Christ in the end and the constant reminder that this world is absolutely hopeless in path and in point. Nothing will ever work out beyond the figment of our imaginings of hope and glory in things we can see or gain, but the things that last forever are the things you don't see. While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal. 2 Corinthians 4:18

the boxer is one of the very very few media (movies, manga, webtoon, ect.) that had such an impact on me and went so deep that it genuinely made me question my own sanity and morality. especially when it was showing yu's full past. its one of my all time favorite pieces of media period. and it flows so naturally and smoothly. the art style looks basic at first but its so so good once it starts getting serious. the characters are all awesome (especially the goat himself, Viktor Grigoryevich) and all feel realistically fake. jay has his charisma and determination with a very bright personality and big heart, yu is a hollow shell of a person sinking deeper and deeper into his own personal hell, and coach k can suck a phat one. the boxer is literally peak fiction

i think this webtoon does a great job of expressing that even if sorrow and death are apart of life, there is still joy to be found. the contrast between the boxer j being the light and yu being the darkness was so brilliant- the webtoon did such a great job contrasting opposite ideals and blending them together. the idea "even in darkness, there is still light" possess themselves between the characters and thats really beautiful.

The Boxer is easily my top favourite webtoon, so far. I don't think I can express enough just how much I freaking love it. From the intense hype fights to the chill moments told and portrayed with wonderful story-telling and art, especially the story-telling. It was just SO compelling from start to finish that I've never felt bored nor lost interest of it in any chapter every week, it really just sucks you in and never lets you go even with the side characters. I've read a lot of webtoon for years and I've never been as hooked as i was with The Boxer. At first it gave of the feeling of "oh yey OP boxer dude pows down school bullies, hype fights let's gooo!" but it instantly proved that it's MUCH MUCH MORE than that. It was about life, how each and every character went through it, how they learned and grew throughout the series, and of course Yu's journey to finding meaning in life. The way everything was portrayed and told is simply fantastic. Add to that how wonderfully JH (the author) blended in Christian/religious undertones too with the representations and all that. Everything about The Boxer is just wow, I don't think I'll ever have a read like it. I have yet to read The Horizon but I'm already pretty sure that I'll be in a ride. JH tells a story in such a beautiful and interesting way, I'll literally read anything he writes, lol. That aside, just like everyone is saying, i highly HIGHLY recommend The Boxer

OMG YESS I ACCIDENTALLY AUDIBLY SQUEALED WHEN SEEING THIS VIDEO I'm so glad someone is finally talking about this webtoon, it's so well written and has really solid themes. From tricking the reader into thinking Yu is the protagonist and then revealing that he was basically everyone's antagonist all along and everyone else is the protagonist (he plays a lot with the assumed roles characters have in a story, and subverts expectations with it, it's really interesting), to the nuance each of his characters have, The Boxer makes me gush as a writer every time I read it. I also love how well the writer integrated Christian subtext, cause there aren't many great stories that use it to it's full potential, and The Boxer does it really well without shoving it in the reader's faces. I can go on and on about what makes The Boxer such a great webtoon. The art, the panel placement, pacing, there's soo much to cover. It's kinda sad that a lot of people don't give it a chance cause of the premise, or how stereotypical it seems at first glance.

I didn't expect you to make a video on this but I clicked immediately when I saw!! The Boxer actually has a spin-off series now going, centered around Jay and Ryu! (Called Ill-Fated Relationship) I've finished The Boxer and am caught up with the spin-off- it was one hell of a ride. I really love how the author would show a seemingly random imagery on one hand, before hitting you in the head with the other. It made every episode seem planned with all this foreshadowing! If you want, I have a mystery thriller recommendation! It's called Pig Pen by Carnby Kim. (Author of Sweet Home, Bastard, and Shotgun Boy). About this man stranded in an island, not remembering who he is, while he finds himself in trouble between a family that could be serial killers. We follow the protagonist trying to pick up clues about the family, this place, even memories of himself. I have to tell you, the story beats where we learn everything with the protagonist is a total _mind fuck_ I hope you can check it out!

I’ve already started and it’s… wow. Every character gets there time to shine. Guys I’m guessing we’re not gonna see again get backstory’s that explains there story. Like the guy with orange hair and red eyes. He worked his ass off only for him to see that despite his hard work. He isn’t gonna be able to achieve his dream because there are one in a thousand people and theirs are one in a million people. I’m honestly excited to see how it goes and I’m excited how they’ll write the higher ups

I stopped watching this vid from the start and decided to read the manhwa. Now I finished the manhwa and decided to watch this vid again, I can just say that its beautiful, It made me feel mixed emotions, 1 chapter I'll be crying then next chapter I'll be laughing. Its really a masterpiece. Shame that I only discovered it this late.

Boxer is the first manga/webtoon/manhwa to make me bawl my eyes out like a b*tch. Truly far more than I expected but everything I wanted, this story did the best thing a story can, it make me feel. One of the best pieces of fiction out there

When I woke up today I didn't expect to spend whole day reading the manhwa but now that I finished the boxer I can say that you are definitelly right in that it has less to do with boxing and more with characters around it. I would say that this manhwa is about what iis the meaning of life more than boxing. I mean it was kinda obvious closer to the end but I had that feeling through whole manhwa

I'm not sure if you've read it, but you should definitely try reading "The Horizon" by the same author. I don't think it's officially translated but it's the author's debut work and it's probably my favourite manhwa by far.

the boxer as the best story out there its not going to be a debate. it change the way i think and im not the type to cry but this series made me do that more then three times. i highly recommend this to anyone who can read.

Sports stories are usually not about sports! That doesn't sound weird at all. Sports are a really neat device for moving characters along. a game or a match has some obvious beginning, middle, and end, and frequently forces friends and rivals alike to compete. They also lend themselves well to mentorship arcs and overcoming adversity. Webtoons sleeps on sports webtoons like nobody's business.

the boxer also conveys very well that your backstory is of no matter in the ring or in the fight there is no anime kind of emotional flashbacks or anything which is always something i wanted to see cause it's realistic, cause when you start getting hit you don't see flashbacks in your mind of why you are doing this, rather a state of panic, rage, just want to leave everything for peace kind of desire or something close to that takes over, or the thought of how to defeat him now?, contrary to anime.
