the week before the bar exam: a rollercoaster of emotions

I took the bar exam 49 years ago. Used a Parker cartridge fountain pen, the same one that I had used for every examine in college and law school. The world was a very different place in 1974. I recently received a notice from the bar association that I am now a "senior counselor," a polite way of saying that at age 75 it is time to start thinking about giving it up. So you and Nathan are beginning as I am ending. Good luck to both of you, not that you'll need it.

The Bar exam is ok if you study hard. My daughter passed the New York State Bar exam in the top 5th percentile. However she studied very hard like it sounds you are. She took prep courses too. She says that was pivotal. Sometimes taking one day off helps though too.

Good luck y’all!! Happy to provide Nantucket recommendations too - Seagrille, Cisco Brewery, and Millie’s are fantastic. Brant Point Grill is also very good but expensive. Cru has a good lunch menu and Downyflake has really good breakfast. Whatever you do, make reservations ahead of time because most places fill up super fast!! Highly recommend doing the bluff walk in Sconset. Bring a light jacket or cardigan too since it can get chilly at night. Have SO much fun!!

Also going to take the bar exam. I think the bar use to be a test of minimum competency where as long as you study in good faith then you're okay (essentially just do the prep). The passage rates used to be 80% or more. In Florida the passage rate for first time test takers is about 65%. I know so many people that don't pass by one point or a half a point. Florida also just added commercial paper and secured transactions as topics so barbri didn't have much for these topics.

I know the bar is over now but as someone who took the bar last year, whoever was saying to you “it’s not that bad” is someone in the minority. I think most people, including myself, would say it was probably the hardest and most all-consuming times of my life. From studying to taking the test, to waiting three months for results, it was fucking brutal. Your feelings about the test and the anxiety are very valid and NORMAL. I truly have never had more self-doubt than I did while studying and after the two days of the test, I felt just like I had no shot at passing. Luckily, I did and now here I am a year later to tell the story😂 congrats on being done!!!!
