Also, Weeknd without Drake's "help" got platinum out of mixtape HOB, got so big, that ppl were complaining about Kiss Land for not being as good as The Trilogy, yet dropped BBTM and his songs became huge, literally 2 of the songs from the same album were competing for top 1 on Billboard. So Drake or not, he would've been successful regardless, he had all chances to become successful, especially when High For This at that time was a big thing for parties and everything.
