When Emmylou covers a song, she makes it her own. "Pancho and Lefty", "Till I Gain Control Again", "Leaving Louisiana In the Broad Daylight", "2 More Bottles of Wine", "Tonight the Bottle Let Me Down", "The Queen Of the Silver Dollar", "Sweet Dreams", "Together Again", "Mama's Hungry Eyes", "Today I Started Loving You Again", "Every Grain of Sand", I could go on and on. Nobody does any of those songs any better than Emmylou. She didn't write them but she made them her own. Bob Dylan said he thought her version of "Every Grain of Sand" is among the best of any of his songs that somebody else has recorded. When you think almost every country, rock, folk and blues singer and band has recorded at least 1 Bob Dylan song, so, to be considered one of the best versions of one of his songs is quite an honor. Emmylou knows how to get to the heart of a song and make the listener feel what she's singing, that's for sure. She's a real soul singer. I am grateful that I was alive a young adult the same time as Emmylou Harris when she was turning a generation of rock fans on to country music, like nobody else.

Very well said Vagabond. I'm a few years older than her and saw her singing folk music at a bar in Washington back in 1972. She was unknown back then. A short time later she hooked up with Gram Parsons and sang duets with him in his band called Fallen Angel's. Emmy recorded with him on his only 2 albums with her. He died later that year and Emmylou went out on her own a year later and recorded her album Boulder to Birmingham which was a tribute to her mentor, Gram Parsons. I have followed her and loved her all these years since. She is a one of a kind woman to match her musical talent.

No such thing as a "Cover" . Just a commercially derived term to demean those singing/performing their best efforts at music written by great composers(believe it started most in the rock music arts). No one calls Chicago Symphony performing Brahms a "Cover" either verbally or in the program notes. I could go on and on with a million examples, this term will never be able to be used with consistency across all musically written compositions in the arts. So if this makes sense to you to, don't use the term and pass this thought/message on. Furthermore, in this internet bottle of sorts pass it on by copying/pasting this in the youtube notes of any well done song written by another. In fact, copy this message and put it anywhere in notes of a well done performance of songs from great composers on youtube. The most reasonable thing to do is give the original composer credit. Don't feel like you have to use the word "Cover" as a requirement for posting or introducing any song you wish to play by others. Don McLean of American Pie fame wrote a great article supporting this position. Again, if it makes sense to you, pass it on.

I have friends in bands.. some DO "COVER" the Weight. Obviously.. 99% of CLASSICAL will be a COVER since it was written LONG ago.. so...classical is the exception, not the rule. Bands I know.. DO refer to COVERS. It's not ' commercially derived" really. Often a band will cover a song and NEVER put it on an Album. Gillian never put the Weight on any album. The 2 local bands I know DO it, did not RECORD it... the royalties cost.

My favorite of that era is probably Patti Griffin, but don't discount Ray Wylie and Jerry Jeff. I have a lot of respect for up-and-comers Jamey Johnson, Ray Lamontagne, Zac Brown, Randy Houser and really love the Avett Brothers.

I'm having trouble trying to figure out how people could be calling this the greatest version of this song they've ever heard. From a historical perspective its cool to see all these people on stage together, but musically this rates in right above yr typical coffee house in a college town on a Fri. night and below some good late night pickin around the fire at a good bluegrass festival. this version just isn't inspired - the tempo feels like its dragging and the harmonies are thrown together. My guess is that they didn't have any rehearsal and that if they had been able to run through the song even once they would have killed it. My favorite version has to off 'The Last Waltz' - the Staples singers add a whole new depth of feeling to the song I never dreamed could have existed, and when Rick starts throwing elbows while trying to explain to Chester that he's a peaceful man, WOW. I'm not saying this is a bad version of this song, but its sloppy, unorganized and uninspired. These people on this stage ate professionals and I promise you they're capable of doing better than this.
