I love the concept of the Yes-No die, and I'm about to get meta about it by Yes-anding What if the sides were labelled "Yes And", "Yes", "Yes But", "No But", "No", and "No And"? Wouldn't that be sick? A whole new world of possibilities emerge!
@pseudofentonАй бұрын
So, a d6 with two blank sides, two "And" sides, and two "But" sides - that you roll alongside the Yes/No die? It would work - but my players would always read the "But" sides as a "Butt" side instead, and I cannot accept that level of disruption in my games. ;)
@mtgemperorАй бұрын
That idea would work beautifully for those into solo RPGs.
@chrismain7472Ай бұрын
@@pseudofenton Mathematically, it should be the same either way. I was recommending a single die with "Yes And", "Yes", "Yes But", "No But", "No", and "No And" respectively on the faces. Your suggestion also creates a 1/6 probability for each answer. As my mom always says, "It's 6 one, half-a-dozen the other"
@harrisonlynch4701Ай бұрын
I think the Adventure Time RPG has dice like that. The designer said he didn’t want any math involved just role playing so the game comes with meta dice. I think the different colored dice have slightly different ratios of yes and no so there is still a way to mitigate luck if you’re character is supposed to be good at something

For special dice, the most minimalist dice in my collection would be the Multidice. It's a d2, d3, and d4 in one dice. When you roll it, you get three numbers on top. One in a circle (a d2, like a coin), one in the center (d3), and one in a triangle (d4, like tetrahedron). You just pick the one for the dice you needed to roll.

I've been building an RPG system (in the little spare time I have) and decided to reduce the dice size from a bunch of d6's since I'd need to control some power scaling (it's a classless, skill tree, point by system). So I got inspired by the Royal Game of Ur which I have the STL files for and printed out a bunch of tetrahedral dice that are slightly smaller, and have 2 tips marked. So now I have up to 12 dice that each can roll 0 or 1. (so a much easier coin flip... or technically odds/evens on any even sided dice)... but they're fun to roll.

You revealing your d12 of hit locations pretty much immediately after the interview you did with Trevor Devall over on his channel is pretty amusing to me, considering his system - based on the solo play of it he's got on his channel - bakes hit location into the attack roll. I wouldn't go down to a single set of dice in a single colour plus some spare d6 - I find having two colours of dice available useful - but I can definitely see the appeal of a black on white and a white on black set of RPG dice plus around 10d6 in those two colours as a minimal, high contrast, set of dice. The reason I wouldn't switch from how I currently do "I don't know what the answer to this is" to yes/no dice is that the way I do that feels closer to the mechanics of the game I'm running at the moment than that would - It's a d6 dice pool count successes system, with 4+ being success, but a boost/setback system to change that up or down by up to two steps in either direction. How I answer those questions when playing this game? 1d6, decide before hand if I'm rolling with setback or boost, and a success is a yes. When I'm doing my solo gaming (where oracular tools are vital), meanwhile, I'm in love with the nuance that Mythic GME's d100 probability chart provides, even if not factoring in the chaos factor. Where and which bakes in extreme yes/extreme no to the roll. I guess I prefer having tools that I can apply to general dice - random tables - over specific dice for specific functions.
@BobWorldBuilderАй бұрын
Thanks for checking out that video too! Yeah, whether it's just flavor or randomly determined (mostly used the hit location die for crits or finishing blows), it's generally not consequential to the scene how my group play it. Though when a player wants to target a specific body part, I usually let them go for it with disadvantage on the attack, or just requiring a crit or something, then if it works, the hit it consequential.

I didn't know this when buying, but the label inside the tube that the dice come in has a special spell printed in the inside with corruption effects and a whole spell table of really cool and honestly kind of OP effects. With really high spell casting rolls you can basically just nuke a whole village :D

There is something refreshing and liberating about taking a very minimalist approach to the hobby. As someone who easily gets caught up in FOMO, spending too much money, and "well no I have to have this dice set too because that dice set is red and purple but _this_ dice set, it's _purple and red,_ it's VERY DIFFERENT if you really look at it", the idea of just having a notebook, a pencil, a basic set of dice, and a small, concise rulebook is like a breath of fresh air. Those white-with-black-number dice are gorgeous, the true workhorse of the TRPG hobby, cheap and effective and easy to read, perfect for literally everyone. I think everyone should have a set of basic dice in their collection no matter how crazy they like to get; just pick a favorite color and make sure you have the basic Chessex (or Easy Roller, if you're fancy) dice set in that color, just to have a set that says "hey, all it takes to play these games are a couple bucks, and they'll keep you going for the rest of your life".

My favorite "wierd die" is more for the story than anything, but it was the first "d20" (you'll see why the scarequotes in a moment) I used in a face-to-face game. I played online using MapTools (this was in the pre-Roll20 days), but it wasn't until I got to college that I had an in-person group. I borrowed a set from my college's RPG student group's big Bag-O-Dice, and for some reason I was having terrible luck. I couldn't roll above a 10 the whole session. Then i decided to take a closer look at the die. It was in fact not a d20, but an icosohedral d10. See, in the early days of the hobby, the fact that the modern d10's shape, the pentagonal trapezohedron, wasn't a platonic solid (essentially, platonic solids have all edges, faces, and corners the same the same as each other; in a d10 the faces are the same, but not the edges and corners) and that was seen as a problem for a couple reasons: first, it could theoretically not be as random, due to the lack of full symmetry, and second, availability. See, before D&D, polyhedral dice were specialty items, but icosohedral d10s were already used in wargaming, typically as a d%, so your hobby stores would have already had a stock of those (indeed, the first d20s were just d10s with one set of numbers colored in to show that they were 10+the face value). And because of that quirk of RPG history I had a miserable first in-person RPG performance, but I got a good story out of it, and the Student Group let me keep the die because of it.
