I'd argue that society HASN'T become more accepting of the "weird girl," it's just expanded its definition of normal. As someone who went through high school with undiagnosed autism, I had a front-row seat to the dichotomy of the social acceptance offered to girls who were just different enough to be "quirky" in a way that was considered cute or endearing versus those considered truly weird. It was painful to watch others find an identity of admired independence in their slightly off-beat hobbies or interests while my struggles to speak or move normally enough to fit in, let alone navigate the bewildering landscape of acceptable fashion or interests or conversation, got me repeatedly mocked or rejected. Our cultural fetishization with the 'right sort' of weird just makes it that much more painful to be the 'wrong sort,' culminating in a sense that people like me can't even be WEIRD the right way.
@rainpooper70884 жыл бұрын
Jup. There’s exotic-weird and there’s weird-weird. The media usually panders to the former kind, the one that is witty, special, cool and attractive because it’s a nice fantasy for both men and women alike. One of the best weird girl characters I’ve seen lately is Reggie from Twelve Forever. She’s definitely the weird-weird type and not everything weird about her that her peers make fun of is endearing. Sure, she’s creative, energetic and usually means well, but she can also be rude, gross and childish and the show knows it, which you would never see on any of these exotic-weird characters that are only ever picked on for things that are actually blessings in disguise.
@TheSongwritingCat4 жыл бұрын
Speaking of autism, this feels similar to the difference between various kinds of real autism and Hollywood autism which tends idealize autistic savants. Even if, in universe, the weird girl only has a small friend group, the audience watching the story is often still drawn to her intelligence, humor, style, etc. Movie weird girls may also be helpful to the other characters because of their intelligence, unconventional thinking, etc. Hollywood has trouble telling stories where characters should just be treated well because of their essential humanity. A lot of depictions of the weird girl make her appealing or useful in some way as though she doesn't deserve love, dignity, respect, etc. just because she's a person.

Don't know where you're at now but just in case you or someone else needs it. I was in this situation just 6 years ago and even though no one noticed, I was very insecure. But, after high school, I chose to study Chinese (which was resented in my hometown for being so weird to the point even teachers would ridicule me) and wow, best choice ever. I made amazing like minded friends who I still speak regularly, got my Bachelor, met the love of my life (who ironically went to high school with me) and we just got our own place to live and I got a full-time job I love. I still am the weirdo of 6 years ago, and people are still treating me like one, but as I'm getting older I'm also more confident than ever and owning it! The thing I hate the most about the weird girl trope is how they usually show them as being purposefully weird! Like they’re going out of their way to be weird. I’ve always hated being viewed as weird. I tried my best to imitate what I perceived to be normal or cool but that just made me weirder in the eyes of others. After years of struggling with this, I just learned to be as invisible as possible while also hoping to be noticed for who I really am...not just this weird, awkward creature. Disappointed so little was said about the awkward misfit. Also, weird girl being more mainstream and acceptable is only true if the weird girl is also pretty.

Can relate. I wasn't conventionally attractive or able to keep up with social conventions at the time. Yes true... There is a lot of research done on scapegoating mechanisms but there is little one can do to prevent it from happening. I do believe making victims aware that there is nothing wrong with them as helpful. Unfortunately scapegoating is often a way for families or communities to hide problems that they feel cannot face. In adulthood, scapegoating became a way for adult children to hide the fact of family history of abuse by blaming everything on one member who seemed vulnerable for attack (and/or talks about it). Often the scapegoat is targeted by the siblings who were treated more favorably. In that way, the less favored sibling(s) becomes the punchingbag for everything that is wrong in the family. Family therapy can help but only rarely are the culprits and less affected family members willing to take part. So my focus would be on empowering the scapegoat(s).

@user-ou4yt9qf8e4 жыл бұрын
Many people want to stand out and being a weird girl is the most possible and natural way to do so because weird girls are portrayed as not up with the 'standards' but the more you get to know her the more you feel for her. This makes them the most relatable and authentic characters out there. Growing up adoring this trope, this is exactly the way I felt about it.

@@user-ou4yt9qf8e I think the most appealing part is that "weird girl" never tries to please other people and doesn't blindly conform to norms - if she likes something, she just likes it and doesn't need anybody's validation. We all wish we could care so little what others think. Of course, like any fantasy, this trope also sometimes gets out of control and breaches into unhealthy territory, it's a matter of crossing the line between confidence and arrogance.
@manasigodbole13994 жыл бұрын
As it turns out, though, the weird girl has always been the weird girl-- it's society's perception of her that changes. Anyway, most people aren't 100% one trope or the other, these are just archetypes. Lots of women are weird, cool, smart, etc. all in one.

What I've found is that class also separates the acceptance of the weird girl, too. In real life, the weird girls I know, especially as an adult, wear weird clothing to reflect their inner-uniqueness. Their clothing is mismatched or vintage-looking; they look intentionally poor or lower class. The rich weird girl, like Gigi, has far more acceptance because their class allows them to access and navigate different sectors of life without fear of ridicule for their weirdness. Lower middle class or poor weird girls like Allison, Dawn, or Carrie are weird either unintentionally or as a coping mechanism. Class freedom allows some girls to embrace weirdness and some to hide in its shadow.

Not every performative Weird Girl is middle or upper class. Certainly you can achieve certain aesthetics (e.g. punk) on a budget. I think most people just saw a girl with clearly a lot of personal issues that effected her behavior. At least according to this video’s standards of one, I definitely say out of the skins UK series from that generation in particular it is ‘sketch’ who would fall within the line of the weird girl trope, and being the weird basket case girl who ends up completely losing it & ultimately became the antagonist.

She is a nice example, I think, but, as it has been mentioned in the comments, she is mentally unwell, just like J.J. from the same gen. Also, Pandora from Gen2. She fits the Space Cadet description rather well. Especially in the earlier episodes. What I especially love about Panda is that her character arc didn't show her becoming conventionally pretty or even having a style-typical makeover. By her graduation in S04 she feels less weird, but that's mostly due to growing up and embracing herself. Her actions and words became a bit more adult and refined, while her over-the-top goofy outfit style stayed with her. I actually really liked the writing of her character.

I feel like one aspect overlooked about the smartass weird is that she is often (though not always), ironically as bad as the people she judges. She think she is above "normal" people but her judginess and resistance to be introspective can makes her worse. She thinks other people are lesser for falling into tropes when she often deliberately plays into a trope. I'd love to see a smartass weird girl who learns she isn't above "normals" because people are more complicated than the simpletons she sees them as.

Yes true ..

This also is the same for autistic/adhd weird girls- also a space cadet. To an extent though my weirdness is seen as quirks and more endearing and adorable, but I think part of that is because I hide the messier stuff, the socially unacceptable things to be more digestible. I am true to myself, but people don’t see the layers of anxiety and the fact my brain is constant noise. They see the bounciness, the enthusiasm, the bubbliness and “random” things I say (which is unintentional and mostly me not understanding what is appropriate to say), talking excessively (which is the one people tend to get really annoyed at, but I mean I say about 10% maybe of what is in my head aloud their brains are mostly silent and they don’t understand that if I sit alone with my thoughts I think I’ll explode, also I don’t always know how much is the appropriate amount to talk for the situation or when to stop talking and even when I can pick that up at times it can be very hard for me to stop (think Robin’s monologue from stranger things. oh and the interrupting and poor volume control also makes people mad but I can’t help it

Doesn't make them less weird; they are actual misfits. -- Most cool girls/manic pixie are brunettes. Notice the only weird girl categories with blondes in it were the "negative" ones, not the desired goths and funny sociable smartasses. I'm a natural blonde and I have always been a loner and misfit, now I'm crazy like basket case and space cadet. Brunettes with blue eyes are the most desired combination ever for women. My eyes are brown and I have always been ugly and unpopular. Many mean girls are brunettes, especially in real life.

@porkchoppeaches4 жыл бұрын
She was weird because she was more sensitive then the other kids in high school, to the point where she had psychic abilities. Her mother just damaged her further by pushing religious dogma onto her instead of helping her understand her abilities, her growing body as a woman, and helping navigate society. Instead her own mother was a total basketcase and perhaps recognized psychic abilities in her daughter for years yet saw it as evil due to her religiosity. She also saw women and their bodies and inevitable sexuality as evil too. The mother may have been severely abused, schizophrenic, and delusional herself. Very creative abilities can run in families and the fall out may be a generation here and there that displays mental illness. David Bowie’s brother had schizophrenia, whereas he was a creative genius.

I remember when I was in high school. I was a weird girl. A weird-weird girl. I was smart, kind, but hella shy and anxious around people. I had one real friend, who was also weird, but she was a badass and she kicked everything. She taught me not to be shy anymore, and stand for myself. We were bullied , her because of her weirdness and me because I was with her. We were always together. Later we hung out with other weird misfits that didn't know either how to interact with people, and it was cool not to be alone. My parents used to be misfits too, and I did not have the same norms and values as everyone in school (and found most of the norms stupid and arbitrary). I did not know how to dress "properly" according to standards, let alone interact with people. My only friend before had been another weird kid, who had undiagnosed autism (hypersensitivity - even his mother couldn't hug him when he was five -, showed no interest in normal people, but he was fun, and we had our own world in which we fought dragons, were scientists, battled each other in wind battles, invented a lot of creatures, invented physics laws, we talked about maths... We also both loved to read and read the same books.) I wanted to be accepted and to be like other normal people really bad, but not bad enough to do anything. I was loyal to my friends, and was outraged when the "cool" people wanted me to "dress better" in order to be accepted. I didn't see the point, and also was furious that the way I dressed should have anything to do with them liking me. I liked dressing fun and would never change for them. Also, the few times I could talk with them, I found them boring as hell (but they seemed to have fun at the parties I was never invited in so I was a bit jealous). I also think my bully secretely liked me because the few times where we were alone he was kind with me and we had great conversations about politics and actual cool intellectual stuff. But as soon as there was someone he was mean again. In college, I learned to be cool and weird at the same time, hanging out with the weird people, talking to (almost) everyone, still reading way too much and liking weird things but I learned to make small talk and that makes a hell of a difference. And I stood up for myself and told my bully to grow the fuck up in front of a full bus on the first day of school and he left me alone. Fast forward, 5 years after college, I'll be 23 in two months and I'm still a weird nerdy way-too-kind adult but got my shit together. I'm kind of cool, I think. Every people I hang out with turns out to be kind of weird in their own way. I don't think "normal" exists. Everyone can be weird if you give them a chance to express themselves. I love people and am an extrovert (and still talk to my childhood friend, but he's an introvert so whenever we interact too much he gets overwhelmed so we see each other once a year and it's enough). I also love painting, jazz, science, bad puns and 80's sci-fi books. I have read like only 35% of philip k dick's books but there are a lot, and scientific papers don't let me much time or energy left to read. Now, I clean my room, my appartment, and hand back my school stuff in time. I have a job to support myself financially and am becoming emotionnally independant. I'm studying to become a speech therapist and I absolutely love it, especially the brain-related stuff and neurology. There are still a lot of struggles, but I have friends, have a satisfying sex life, have a satisfying career plan, and I am, overall, happy. To anyone that has is hard because of weirdness : I hope you are okay, here's a virtual brain hug, it gets better eventually. And other misfits can be cool too. And the key to interact with people is to welcome them and let them talk about themselves, people love to feel like someone actually listens to them (discovering this was an incredible revolution to me so I'm sharing this tip.) Well sorry that was long but I felt like sharing. Thanks if you read to this point, and have a nice day.

The weird girl trope is the media's approximation of girls who have autism. Like, if you look at a lot of the popular weird girls shown in this video, I would dare say most of them are autistic on some level. Autism was studied and diagnosed quite commonly among boys, but it's just as common in girls, it just goes undiagnosed most of the time in those girls who are higher functioning. When someone meets a girl like this, they unconsciously pick up on this, but don't consciously understand it, and so that's where their rejection of these girls comes from.

Yup
@anonymouscandle12234 жыл бұрын
The more i learn about Autism and how it functions in girls, the more I wonder if I have it to some degree because i've always been the gothic weird girl, i've always stood out for reasons I don't identify. I don't have all the symptoms now but growing up I could relate to a lot more of them. Sometimes, other people just seem so alien and I struggle to understand why. Someone could be the most popular person in the room and I'd still see them for their worst traits, then i'd struggle to see why they're so well liked. I'm always creating elaborate fantasy stories, I don't see a point to socializing much and can go months without going out just fine. I don't have many friends because I don't understand the criteria for making them. It always feels artificial whenever i'm talking to someone new. Humans are very confusing, if anything isnt going well then i freeze up and have no idea what to do or say in that situation. I wish I knew for certain but I always worry that i'm self diagnosing too much.
Instead of humanizing and understanding them, they just fetishize it and call it “not like other girls, unfortunately.”

The goth girl was my aspiration since I was a child, I always loved all things goth: the style, the music, the architecture even. But wasn't until I experienced people finding the things I liked weird that I became the weird girl. I was (still am?) a weird girl, like kids at school legit told me "you're weird" and for some times I could relate to the weird girl character but at a certain point she started to get on my nerves. I guess because my weirdness was genuine and non-intentional, I didn't try to be weird - I just was. So seeing the character that is supposed to be me and having her doing everything to be the weird/mysterious one annoyed me. It was the same for girls in real life that try to pass as the weird girl. Being that one person, I can tell it wasn't fun. I questioned myself a lot and had really low self-esteem but ultimately and never got rid of what made me weird. The point is, the weird girl is a trope I appreciate when the character isn't weird just for the sake of it.

Years ago on a middle school bus a boy called me weird. I said, "Thank you for the compliment." He was surprised and didn't bother me after that. It was a defining moment for me. I still got bullied but I took control of the word weird. I define weird for myself as not going with the obvious answer. As an adult I taught my son that being weird is SO much more interesting and fun than being normal. Movies can really mess people up. Bullying also messes people up. I wasn't bullied because I was weird, I was bullied because I was quiet and timid and didn't fight back. I was an easy target. Really, even if I fought back I would have been bullied. I was too tenderhearted and easily wounded. People who would bully picked up on that. Now that I am older and have gained confidence in myself, I don't let bullies get to me. I have the confidence to know that I can stand up for myself and those around me. I know when to fight back and also, importantly, when to walk away from a fight. Yes, I went through a deep depression during middle school and some of high school, but that is my past and I use that knowledge and experience to try to help people who might be bullied now. I am in a healthier place now.

I would love to see a video about the character of Ki Jeong (if it's written this way) in Parasite. She's kind of the typical smart girl that knows what she wants and sometimes appears even cunning and ruthless. But she is actually interesting and original, and above all really likeable. She reminds me of Alex Russo, from Wizards of Waverly Place, in a certain way. Or even Cristina Yang, from Grey's anatomy. I would love to death a video about characters like the three of them, because there's something that makes them, above their apparent selfishness and ruthlessness, lovable. Sorry for the mistakes but I don't know English very well

I am: black, goth and weird. I am accepted by a good amount of people because I'm outgoing and funny. I know that's the only reason why. I have had a lot of traumatic experiences in life and when I tell people about them and the state of my mental health they're always surprised or don't believe me. When I am giving into my depression and anxiety and don't act as if I have rainbows coming out my ass they don't really pay attention to me. When they do instead of giving me space they just try to make me stop being depressed and smile so they can feel some sort of accomplishment like they fixed me. Even among my peers I'm a pariah and it took years to be ok with that. I've learned to be ok with never being understood and just play the part at an early age. Sometimes I don't even know who I am and what part of me is real but I do accept the weird and goofy parts of me that help me cope with life. It's a struggle but I'm fine with being the weird chick. Besides black lipstick looks great on me, I'll never stop wearing it 🤷🏿♀️
