Came for a history lesson. Left with an undying urge to erect a kickass pergola.

good video, it took me 5 minutes to realize this wasn't a chemistry channel

It response to the assertion that it doesn't corrode, Aluminum (or Alumium as it was originally named) does form an oxide layer almost instantly upon contact with air. However aluminum oxide has some very interesting qualities. As opposed to iron oxide, which will penetrate the metal pretty deep, spread, and flake off exposing more metal to the air, aluminum oxide actually forms a protective barrier around the metal, preventing further oxidation. It's harder than elemental aluminum, and although it is more brittle it doesn't flake off the way rust does. So pretty neat.

Super neat!

Actually 6000 series aluminum corrodes quite badly and has to be coated with paint, plating or anodizing to prevent that in service.

I thought I found a new chemistry or history channel. Great job, never would have expected this.

Hello Aluminum, we have a favorite grade and machine it on a regular basis, it is the 7075 grade, it does not flex, it is strong and it holds its shine at a much higher level, then there is the personal reason, it is the Zinc though it does also contain magnesium and copper, you see when you look at the 7075 alloyed aluminum it has purple reds and blues within it and as a machinist I just love that color in the metal also the aluminum chips or swarf as they are cut removed from the block or bar of material the chips break off really well and this reduces the gumming staying in contact with the cutter edge or bit on other alloys of aluminum, nice to hear you explain the history as history to me is very important. So, go out, get some aluminum, buy a mill or lathe, get out and machine some, make something from this amazing alloy, your life will never be the same, I love machining metals. Lance.

I wouldn’t have found your channel if it wasn’t for the education stuff. More more more please. Also I want a Pergola now as well

Thank you for the kind comment. We definitely have plans to continue the educational content, and if you come around to buying your pergola, we would be happy to help :)

As a non-American, I find the pronunciation of "pergola" interseting. Being Australian, it's usually 'per-gol-ah' , where as Americans say 'per-ga-la' . Either is fine , it's a regional difference thing.

I hear ya, digger! 🤠 I like to say they have a problem with their empha-sis - (as opposed to em-phasis?). Just so no yanks get their fanny packs in a knot, I also claim that kiwis (New Zealanders/hobbits/conspiracy theory/whatever....), suffer from Irritating Vowel Syndrome! And don't get me started on flamin' Aussies .... I bet this poster I am replying to is some bloody crow eater or goddamned sand groper!!!

Well I know it don't rust but it absolutely corrodes I own a tire shop and I guarantee you at least once a day and cleaning corrosion off of the bead of the wheel where the tire sits because the corrosion causes the wheel to leak aluminum oxide layer on the outside that helps protect it from corrosion but if that oxide layer gets Disturbed at all it will corrode

I believe that the very tip of the Washington Monument was originally made of aluminum.
@theluxurypergola10 күн бұрын
Correct - and still is! At the time it was the largest piece of cast aluminum recorded. Aluminum was still decently expensive then too.

Amazing to think at one time aluminum was more valuable than gold now I find it in the garbage

It's incredible isn't it? Went from incredibly valuable to commodity in a relatively short period of time.

Aluminum is not high strength. As an allpy, mixed yes. By itslef not really, especially compared to steel or iron or titanium

Outside North America and among scientists you would be talking about Aluminium (as in Potassium, Sodium etc.) There is little basis for the American name Aluminum.

Except it came first.

Actually, they use the original spelling. Like many things, the USA is behind the rest of the world.
