In this video, we explore the iconic Dire Straits song "Money for Nothing," from its origins to its lasting impact on rock music. Formed in 1977, Dire Straits rose to fame with hits like "Sultans of Swing" and "Romeo and Juliet." By 1985, they were ready to release "Money for Nothing," a track born from a chance encounter in an appliance store, where Mark Knopfler overheard a delivery guy's candid remarks about rock stars.
The song became a massive hit, reaching No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning critical acclaim for its innovative music video, which featured groundbreaking computer animation. The video won the first-ever MTV Video Music Award for Best Video in 1986 and helped solidify Dire Straits' status in the music industry.
However, "Money for Nothing" also sparked controversy due to its use of a derogatory term, leading to debates about its meaning and impact. Despite the backlash, the song remains a classic, recognized for its unforgettable guitar riff and thought-provoking lyrics.
Join us as we delve into the history, legacy, and controversies surrounding "Money for Nothing," and discover why it continues to resonate with audiences today. Don't forget to like and subscribe for more music history and analysis! This description summarizes the key points of the script while enticing viewers to watch the video for more in-depth information.

Dire Straits were an almost yearly touring band over here in Australia. Many years after Brothers in Arms they did a tour and played back to back arena shows in Melbourne. It was apparently cheaper for the band to rent a big house as a band and do the direct helicopter to the gig every night. One of my old chefs was in charge of a pub right near where they were staying and were in there quite a bit and were left alone to enjoy a quiet drink and dinner. Apparently they appreciated it immensely. On the last night they were there the pub had its usual open microphone night and DIRE STRAITS PLAYED IT FOR FUN! The locals knew who it was and was enjoying every minute of it. The owner had no idea about anything later asked them to be the regular Sunday night band😂 Apparently one of them told the owner they couldn’t do it ‘as they had previous work commitments’ 😂😂😂

Contrast the use of the word between money for nothing and one in a million. There you get the context that so many people are lacking. Mark used the language of the protagonist because it was so right. It's a social commentary on what the working class thought of rock stars. Just because someone gets offended doesn't mean their offence is always valid.

It was indeed a 1983 Les Paul 'Standard'...a reissue of the Historic 1959 Les Paul, not a Les Paul Junior. This guitar was sold at auction in Jan 2024 for £592,000 although it had a guide price of £10,000 - £15,000 and Knopfler confirmed it was the guitar used on the recording of Money For Nothing. Ordinarily a 1983 Les Paul '59 reissue would be worth £6,000 - £8,000.

You should do a video on Dann Huff. How an easy listening Christian guitarist went on to become one of the most respected and sought after session players and producers. The man basically invented the 80s guitar sound playing on everything from Kenny Loggin's "Danger Zone" to Madonna's "Like A Prayer" and Peter Cetera's "Glory of Love." Dann Huff WAS the soundtrack of every 80s song, whether they know it or not.

I was 14 when this song came out. Whatever the band meant by using the F word was utterly lost on every little Michigan 14 year old I knew. It got quoted in the halls at school, kids turned up that part of the song and hit rewind to hear it again. All the little bigots I went to school with used it as an anthem. The artist's intention has meaning, of course, but how it's received also has meaning. Some artists recognized this and some don't, and it was the 80's. The same kids misinterpreted the The Beasties Boys in later years (which was much more amusing), along with many other bands and songs.
@IRNHYD
@IRNHYD 7 күн бұрын
You completely glossed over the point here, by citing the fact that some 14 year olds made the lyrics an impromptu anthem. The ignorance of some middle school students does not validate your argument. Social policy should not be dictated by the notions of tween kids that going to be brutal and mean to each other regardless of the song playing on the radio.

Love Dire Straits. Knoffler is so awesome. He pulled a Weird Al, and got Al on that same song. It was great he demanded to play on the song with Al. I love the UHF soundtrack. Also. That thumbnail is epic. 😂

I got it completely from the very start !! Mark Knopfler was in New York ( or some such America village ) and he went to an electrical store to buy something and inside the TVs ware all tuned to MTV !! There was a couple guys there unloading stuff from a truck parked outside ,stuff like TVs in Boxes and Refrigerators , Hoovers etc etc .When they came in the store they saw some weird looking rock band like Kiss or Iggy Pop or Def Leppeard playing on the TVs and one said " Ha look at them freaks ! That ain't working ! We got to work hard every day moving all this heavy stuff to get our money " right in front of Knopfler .This gave Knopfler the idea for a song !

As Jez Hunt says, Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow and grew up on Tyneside. He refers to the area in "Tunnel of Love" "Walk away walk away, from Cullercoats to Whitley Bay" which are both coastal resorts near Newcastle.

I get the song. I understood the tongue-in-cheek immediately because, at the time, I was a young musician grappling with how hard it is to make it look easy.

Right, back in the day, the F word ( can’t believe I have to say F word) was not used as a slur but as in the same general context as the B word or the C word and I never heard that it was aimed at any artist. Sheesh 🙄

I always thought of Don't Stand So Close To Me when hearing the "I want my MTV" bit, but didn't know that Mark had The Police in mind when the beginning was written, and also didn't know that was Sting singing the beginning of Money For Nothing!

Mark Knoffler remarked his guitar sound came from a wah pedal making a sound left at particular poisition which acounted for the unique sound it made.

I remember when we all were waiting in anticipation for the video to drop on MTV, as they had done a big promotion effort on the channel for it, and everyone being blown away by the look of everything. And of course the Weird Al parody video from that era was equally amazing.😂

Brothers in arms was the best recorded and mastered album I had ever heard when it came out. It set a standard that was generally unmatched for a very long time. By todays standards, it's even better. If you really want to brutalize your sound system, this is the album to use. It's almost like there is no real peak until things start melting. It is so dang clean it just makes you want more and more.

Lmao. My dad introduced me to alot of music and was always giving me tapes to listen to in my Walkman before bed. I was about 8 years old when he gave me the Brothers In Arms album. Anyway i was in the 3rd or fourth grade when my teacher thought it would be a great idea to let each student bring in a song they liked, play it and then discuss it. 😂. I naturally brought that tape and she proceeded to play Money for nothing. When the verse with the little fgt came on she jumped out of her seat in a panic to shut it off. She then proceeded to try to explain the lyrics, but changed it to " the little people". Now i was to young to understand but i kind of felt like i did something wrong just didnt know what. Nothing ever happened because this was Nyc in 92 and there wasn't any of this woke crap around. But years later thinking about it, i dont think i ever laughed so hard in my life. ( at the situation) anyway very bizarre. What could she say? That an 8 year old is homophobic? I didnt understand the lyrics fully at the time. I wonder how that would've played out these days 😂😂😂

I'm not a Dire Straits fan, but I recognise Brothers in Arms is excellently recorded. My vinyl copy has a really great sound compared to most of my other LPs. As far as I'm concerned it puts to bed the idea that analog recording and mastering is the be-all and end-all.

I mean Yeah the video and song are so iconic, in that era you had Bon Jovi and Def Lepard putting out catchy music. all the way up to the early 2000s you had the wave of Rock and alternative Rock really dominating. I still say Executives are what killed the music industry, anti consumer, lazy, and over predatory with the artists.
