The key with a PZM is that it uses the flat surface to couple itself with whatever it's sitting on. So for example when you set it down on a board room table, it's using the entire table surface as a sort of an extended diaphragm or antenna almost. I remember as a kid playing guitar and you'd put the headstock against the wall, and the whole wall would ring. Its sort of the same thing. The PZM is tiny sounding by itself, it needs a surface to help collect the sound. So if you had a board, chalkboard, aluminum baking sheet, wooden side of a bogo, table tipped on it's side, etc... Tape the PZM to the surface using gaffers tape and the whole area turns into a gigantic mic. In the case of guitar it's still only probably good a room mic, but it would be interesting to test different surfaces.

Great explanations! I got a nice sound from brass and saxophone with this mic hooked at a rose wood panel wall
@NinjaGodfather6 күн бұрын
What you're saying about how to use it is correct however it's not transferring vibrations like the guitar headstock analogy you used It's more accurate to think of it as a sound collector like a satellite dish or something. A larger surface will collect more base but the base is still coming through the air not vibrations being transferred, I've heard that it correlates to the size of the sound wave in the air.
@NinjaGodfather6 күн бұрын
The correct way to mic a guitar cap with a PZM is to put it on a hard flat boundry surface (hard floor or plywood on carpet etc) directly in front of the cabinet, it will actually sound great if you do this.
@StephenCameron3 жыл бұрын
I have a couple of those. They're good for piano, for a budget mic. You're supposed to put them on a flat surface. (Caveat: I mostly don't know what I'm talking about.)
@sheatanner99353 жыл бұрын
I was actually going to mention the piano thing myself. I can't remember if we mic'ed a grand or an upright (I believe it was the grand), but we taped two of them inside the piano and recorded them and mixed them with a room mic and it was awesome. We used Crown PZMs though not realistic.

Placing the PZM on the wall in front or behind an open back cab is similar to turning the wall surface into to a speaker cone( like using a speaker to capture signals in reverse). You can also use double sided tape to get a more defined transfer of signal from the surface to the PZM.

I owned a pair of these back in the day, I found a big difference between the AA battery & the suggested upgrade...like a 1/2 size AA, but more juice coming out of them...worked awesome. These are great on piano, bass drum, acoustic guitar and all kinds of stuff. If you record live gigs, as I did, mount them on the largest flat surface you can, helps immensely. They also have excellent soundstage placement....you can tell exactly where & how far things are away from the mic......wish I still had them..!! Cheers from Vancouver Island Michael :)

I was in a studio where the engineer used one for the hi hat. Sounded great! When me and my friends used to do 4 track recording we used one on the floor in front of a little practice amp, sounded really good from what I remember.. we used what we could get our hands on. I miss committing to a sound, and making stupid recordings.. times were simple back then 😊

The PZM pops up in funny places. I was watching an interview with Rob Schnapf who recorded Beck's Mellow Gold. Apparently Beck did the vocals for Loser with a Crown PZM! I dig the tone at 5:!4... could use it as a filtered sound for a guitar break.

The idea behind the PZM, if I remember, is to put the microphone really close to a surface. That place is the "pressure zone" because only the air pressure can vary; the air cannot move back and forth next to a solid surface. The important thing though is that because the mic is right at the surface, it cannot pick up reflections from that surface, like if it were an inch away, a foot away, or three feet away. Reflections will cancel against the main signal, causing comb filtering effects. To hear that, stand with your face close to a wall and make a loud SSS sound, while moving your head back and forth.

A buddy of mine who runs a studio where a lot of people go to record their drums and guitars because of the HUGE , awesome play room has been using PZMs (Crown) for years and years. Designed as a secondary mic and not the primary and can add some cool vibe. You really got an AC/DC thing there at one point with the dangle and I wouldn't be surprised if Fraze didn't use one at Warehouse on AC/DC- which also has one of the best play rooms out here.

The PZM always sounded boxy and AM radio ish. I thought the best sound it gave was the first set up hanging in front of cab. I’d love to hear other old Crown pzm’s. Apparently some of them are quite good (depending on the source and placement)

I really like it as a room mic, adds a nice depth. On the cab it sounds pretty ballsy but also phasey, maybe try to align the two tracks in your daw. Another cool thing to try is using it on the back of the cab and blending it in with the SM57 (after flipping the phase). That's something Dave Jerden (Alice In Chains, The Offspring) used to do with two SM57s.

I think it was hanging backward there, the bump should be toward the sound source. They are also known as Boundary Layer Microphones if you want to look that up. The idea for these is that they sit on a flat surface, so really it should have been on the floor with the cable away from the cab.
