What a huge difference at 8:58 when you switched over to the 12V batteries on the PZM! I still have two of the very same PZMs which you are reviewing. I bought them for a ludicrously low price sometime back in the eighties. However, I have long since lost the manual so it was informative to be reminded that the batteries should be removed if the PZM isn't going to be used for a week. Lesson noted! I currently have my PZMs screwed into the sides of an upright piano which I play very week at one of my resident gigs. I MUST find somewhere that sells those 6V batteries. (Rechargeable ones would be even better because I generally use rechargeable AAs.) I can't understand why these superb mics aren't widely available nowadays. Pound for pound (I'm British) they're the best value microphones I've ever bought and I've bought dozens of different mics over the years. P.S. The one thing that's always puzzled my (given the physics of how they work) is why the plate is *square* instead of circular! It seems to me that the edges of the plate are simply a waste of metal but then I'm not a qualified acoustics engineer. 😜

This is a great unboxing and explanation of this classic piece, you could clearly hear the difference with the 12v. Loved seeing the manual.

It would be great to give a link to the owner's manual... I own two of these mikes, but not the manual, which seems really useful.

I have two of these from the1980's when they were new. I use them all the time in my piano with AA's. I completely forgot about the higher voltage possibility. And I had lost my old manual. Thanks.

How did you get on?

Also. I leaned that this is the higher quality one. the Crown company made the actual microphone cartridge. Later I think it was 33-1090B were not as good.

when radioshack used to make good things but again its from crown so its hi quality

I remember when those came out, I never owned one, just remember...I hear some low rumble but not much, that could be attributed to just laying on bear wood, maybe a place mat for a damper might work? Other then that, it is very impressive, nice warm sounds with great forward audio to it! I'm so impressed, I think I may look for one for my videos, then I wont have to worry about wearing a lapel mic! Great video, thanks!

The instructions say to place it on a hard surface for best results (I hope I'm never close enough to see any "bear wood" I'd start running faster -Ha!) Who knows...that low rumble may have been my stomach! If you're thinking of getting one, consider getting two for true stereo. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Vintage Electronics Geek I owned two of these and they were incredible but the 5m unbalanced cable is a killer. My realistic PZM had a 25 foot cable. And 25 feet of unbalanced microphone cable is crazy. Expect it to hum like crazy. I didn't hear it really back in the day but more recently the PZM hums like an organ. I still have one (not up to factory speck - rust). The other I had to throw out because it was a 30 year old mike that was stored in a very damp room. In other words it rusted to death. There is nothing wrong with buying the Realistic PZM mike ( used good condition) but my advice is buy a professional PZM mike with a balanced XLR connector. This guy's video is boring me to death. There is another short one that is better.
