Why i think JJ was higher then most fans thought 1. Hate to break it to fans but a lot of then actually dont know football as much as they think they do which includes me. 2. JJ was in a pro style offense and was able to change plays at the line if he thought another one was better which rarely happens in college. 3. He showed he was a team player throughout his whole college career. When he was on the team, he told recruits that if they are thinking of parties and girls dont come here, we are trying to win. " shows, he has that competitive nature that teams want ao badly. 4. Everytime they needed him to get a 1st down or something big to happen he got it done. You dont go 27-1 just by handing the ball off theres a lot more to that. 5. Its been confirmation the Michigan watched a lot of vikings game tapes last season so now JJ has even more prior knowledge then we knew of on how the NFL plays work and he is only 21. Him being 21 and having all the info and reps that are at pro level system's, teams love that.

Yup, that’s everything I said in the video. It’s easy to look at a guy who has a flashy play style and awesome arm and label him elite. But when it comes down to a guy like JJ, high IQ isn’t as evident of entertaining enough to entice fans.

I agree that it's probably both. Presumably, he was underrated in the media, and a lot of teams had him at about a late first despite a lack of hype. But when the media caught on to the more accurate perception, his sudden change from Day 2 to Day 1, combined with him winning the Natty, propelled him up higher, and the added media hype made teams in turn project him higher and higher.

This is a GREAT video. The two things i would add is Mccarthy had an unbelievable pro day and also the more time people got to watch film on him the more you could find out. Unless you watch every play thay he ever played at michigan in order, you dont truly get a full picture

I think his rise also had some to do with the fact that he’d been tied to the Vikings for a better half of the season and they were very outspoken about moving up whether it was for him or not

I’m biased as a Michigan fan, but I don’t agree that he’s the “weirdest”. His arc in terms of draft stock is sort of similar to a mix of Daniel Jones and maybe Justin Fields- HC with a pro coaching pedigree with a NFL starting QB from the previous generation on his resume (Eli Manning, Andrew Luck) and then you have unexpected level of success in the playoffs like Fields. I suppose that unique combination definitely fed into the hype, the problem is our offensive scheme is so run heavy that he really didn’t have to put up the volume that other prospects have, and unlike Burrow he didn’t really smash things like completion percentage in the SEC.

Yeah do you think he would’ve put up burrow-like numbers if he had the passing attempts? I don’t think he would’ve because he did have again, a really good run game to lean on. As for his draft arc, nah I don’t think so, DJ was picked as a reach at 6, and was only ever rumored to go to the giants. JJ was consistently mocked at THREE. I do get what you’re saying though

I think you're leaving out the biggest reason that he rose up the rankings. This was a very quarterback hungry draft. He was not the only quarterback to go a lot higher than he was supposed to go. There were a few guys that were supposed to be second rounders that ended up in the first round.😊
