My parents had their business for 48 years, my father had the restaurant and my mother a hair salon, they always told me that advertising can be a double edge sword, you pay and the return don’t match the investment or make a good job, help the customers and his word forward is just straight profit. I do understand that times are not the same, but the way to treat a customer to get their business has not change much! I do like your approach, thanks for the video.

Same. I tend to do most of my stuff my self but some times I don't have the time, help to deal with something heavy, room to do it, or maybe to cold outside. The shop does not charge to much and is quick on things. All this because they sell me small bits of metal here and there at cost and no extra cost for time cutting it.

Public accountant and hobbyist here. i LOVE the breakdown and case study here. Prospect time is a big part of organic growth and as long as its tracked, benchmarked, and budgeted then its a perfectly rational and valuable component of any service operation. You're investing in your businesses goodwill and in most cases that's the largest component of your enterprise value.

I have done a lot of repair work over the years on all kinds of equipment, Things with two wheels, four wheels more. Not once have I ever charged anybody to evaluate a repair that did not end up happening. How do you charge somebody for something you didn't do? There are plenty of people out there that will disagree, I have met some and they all have a similar trait....a-holes. I never advertised, new customers were word of mouth referrals, old customers came back over and over. Its refreshing to see someone that applies good old school business logic and treats people the way they want to be treated. Good job.

You will make that 2 hours of labor back 1000 fold just from word of mouth of how honest and straight forward you conduct business! Also some of those guys like TOT (this old tony) and Abom (adam) mite be interested in doing an episode making that clutch release lever. I bet just from making this video someone will comment and have or know where to get the parts needed for that repair than you can do the weld repair after all. Thanks for sharing!

I never thought I would ever hear what I have just heard you say!!!!! I had my own Electrical contracting business in the 90's and I treated my customers exactly the same as you do ....Recommendation is an amazing asset that any business needs to succeed and thats exactly what your kind of business prowess creates. My best example was when I was called out to a lady who had problems with her Heating I spent about 1.5 hours in total checked all the switches fuses trips and connections and found NOTHING... operator error is all I could come up with the lady was a senior citizen. It was a cold day..Boxing day the day after Christmas day and I had a very happy customer she was warm!!! She asked what she owed me??? I had found nothing wrong and I told her there was NO charge and I wished her a Merry Christmas. The work that I had from that lady her Family and Friend was crazy and of coarse the knock on (All Recommendation) so that 1.5 hours i gave up on that day was the the best bit of PR I could ever do for my Business.

Your integrity and your honesty with your customer is PRICELESS! Having a reputation for integrity and honesty will always spread! Where crankcases are vulnerable to damage from drive chains jumping or breaking, it may be possible for owners to buy a 0.5mm sheet of titanium (ebay has gazillions of them) and mount it where it will protect the crankcase. It's an economical way to protect against such damage.

100% agree with your logic, that's exactly how I do things myself. There are a few cases where I WILL bill the customer for everything. One is when the customer is an a$$hole to me all the time for no reason and two is major corporations etc that won't be hurt. People call me nuts but I bill things differently all the time. I have a customer I know is out of work due to the pandemic, nice lady, but her hood flew open on her truck... Destroyed her hood etc. I charged her $50 for a hood off my donor truck and after diagnosing her electrical problem with her lights for free, we swapped out her headlights, turn signals, tail lights and repaired broken bulb connectors all for another $50. Helping her out has now earned me the business and loyalty of her very large family. Did I take a hit for it? Not really. I got the donor truck for the 4wd parts only and what I paid (or rather didn't) pay for those parts alone, the rest of the truck is just money waiting to be parted out. I don't value individual things nearly as much as I do how the customer feels about me as their one-stop shop being honest and loyal to them.

Unfortunately, most people only think about the immediate instead of the long term. There is an old adage, “if you treat people with dignity and respect it will come back to you 10 fold, but if you upset one person by treating them badly, they will tell 100 others.” My philosophy is always give more service and product that (within reason) than contracted to complete or deliver. It has always made my business very profitable.

Very cool. And like you said I think it will probably pay off in the future. I used to work in a hardwood store and used the same approach. It just feels better and more honest. And you will newer have to deal with disgruntled customers. I found the easiest thing to do was to think ”how would I as a customer had liked to be met?” That usually gives one the answer to how to treat customers.

Yep! A little good will goes a long way toward future business. Back in the day we would adjust and lube chains on bikes in the driveway and not charge for it. More often than not the customer would return later with a six pack of soda and/or beer and/or lunch. Then come back for real service work... When the other shops were dead, we were booked 2 weeks in advance.
