Dear New Zealand Whalers of about 1860, this is a message from the future, from the year 2021. There is a women in a kitchen on the other side of the globe, chopping tomatoes and cooking, who has been singing along to your song for almost an hour now. You were probably singing it while cutting up a whale, but it serves fine for cutting up tomatoes, too. She is listening to your song sung by a young Scotsman and a hoard of other people - on a small device which brings your song into many homes across the world right now. "Billy" is slang for a tea kettle that's put over a fire. "Tonguing" is the process of butchering a whale. "Wellermen" are men employed by the Weller Bros shipping company from the 1830s, in this case referring to a resupply ship. The rest of the lyrics for this song are: No line was cut, no whale was freed, An' the captain's mind was not on greed! But he belonged to the Whaleman's creed She took that ship in tow {Chorus} For forty days or even more, the line went slack then tight once more, All boats were lost, there were only four and still that whale did go. {Chorus} As far as I've heard, the fight's still on, The line's not cut, and the whale's not gone! The Wellerman makes his regular call to encourage the captain, crew and all! {Chorus x2 til Finish}

this really fits with the original purpose of sea shaties, that being of group of men locked in a boat in the middle of in an inhospitable ocean desperately trying to keep their minds off the general shitness of their working conditions. and the song itself, refering to a crew on an endless job waiting for some small relief from their corporate overlords with the vague promise of being able to get out of it someday.

Something deep in my soul rejoiced on 'rehearing' this, as though my Spirit 'remembered' singing it for hours when at sea with my chums for months. (I don't usually use the word 'chums' but it seems 'familiar'.)

@@adriaanadriaan finally, after decades of strange nightmares when I'm sick with a fever - seeing a three sailing vessel becalmed - and I'm wondering around the ship but can't find anyone - but once the fever breaks I can't remember much of the nightmares/visions. Even today, when listening/feeling the voices flow through my body, remembering so much. Men depending on each other for their safety, ensuring everyone knows exactly what to do in every circumstance - high gales, when we had a whale on and it was trying to capsize us. The men who lost fingers, or limbs, when caught in the rigging - and the men who drowned - good friends - closer than family. Davy Jones's locker is full of my chums. I've avoided looking for decades - now I feel okay about it. Being clairvoyant can be horrific at times. This has opened a big wealth of love, something I doubted I would ever feel, having pushed people away for decades, (lest they die because of my inaction/stupidity/error). I don't expect people to understand this. I don't care. I've linked to something deep within me - my chums who seemed to be waiting for me to stand up and see the horizon and accept it as it is. LIFE.

@@davidgraham-parker I don't know how but I feel I know what you mean. The one and only time I was on the ocean, I was in 4th grade. I was with the Kawana's (spelling?)on a fishing trip. I had never been on a ship before. I was told I took to it like I was born to it. I felt like I was home. The wind, the salt spray, the sun. Even the constantly moving deck felt natural. I fished and ran allover the ship. I will never forget. I dreamed of fishing for years after.

@@angelataylor5241 thank you for sharing that wonderful memory. What I didn't disclose was upon hearing this for the first time, I cried, no, sobbed heavily, for almost half an hour - a feeling of loss, love, loneliness and joy all wrapped into one flood of emotion. Never experienced that sort of tsunami of emotion/memory before, but I don't discount it as being a Soul memory.
@angelataylor52413 жыл бұрын
@@davidgraham-parker my understanding is that is exactly what you went through. You sound like someone who has had( at least) one past life. The emotions often come first for me. Completely out of the blue! Nothing in my life would mach up. Then the dreams would come, and after some odd memories and knowledge of things I shouldn't know. Things I never learned in this life. So, yah, I know what you mean. I know things about the future some times, sometimes I hear thoughts, other times I can feel other people's feelings/moods. It can be confusing at times.

As a former sailor (U.S. Navy) and historical novelist, I love your remix... I ran across your work while reviewing vintage (17th - 19th century) 'land-based' and at-sea whaling operations for my next novel. Frankly, I'm sort of 'old school' and don't use social media, but I happen to think that you're on to something positive and culturally significant by your reviving old sea shanties! Kudos! And, keep on doing whatcha doing! :) W.D.S.
