While quite old, I do recall once reading a discussion about the Wendigo from a Native POV, and in one case, it began to be seen as analogous to not only colonization and its aftereffects, but also, well, white people and what they did to the land and the Native Americans

"Wendigo is not a cryptid, because cryptids aren't real" I have not expected to hear one of the best and most thought provoking lines in my 14 years of watching youtube from a random video with not even 4k views. Damn.

this guy is the only person ive seen outside of actual native creators thats talked abt monsters/spiritual entities from indigenous cultures being completely butchered for horror games and im suprised more people dont have this way of thinking tbh. started watching for the slendrina review and this review cemented me subscribing

(disclaimer: i'm only speaking from my limited personal knowledge on this as someone who is not indigenous) to add to the list of symbols that Seeking Evil seemed to just drop in from random cultures and also Blaire Witch, you run around burning totem poles (a form of art associated with _the pacific northwest)_ to ward off a Wendigo (a being from various Algonquin groups in _the east coast and great plains)._ like, it's already really apparent that the devs didn't give much of a shit about accurately presenting something from another culture, but that in particular just immediately feels like they went "oh well we're using a native american monster, we need to have you activate a native american checkpoint object thing," completely glossing over the fact that there are a ton of different indigenous groups in north america. never mind that _burning totem poles_ is a bit of an odd way to go about doing that regardless of if they had been consistent

Another video game Wendigo that comes to mind is The Wendigo from the Fallout: New Vegas lite TC mod, Fallout: Dust. The entire game has been overhauled to be significantly more dangerous in various ways, but the most relevant part is what happened to Zion National Park (Now called Zion canyon). In Dust, a large number of creatures have been mutated thanks to the accidental release of Beauveria Mordicana spores from Vault 22 into the atmosphere. While most infected became fast and hard-hitting monsters called "Spore Carriers", one of them, commonly believed to be Joshua Graham himself after he was killed by spore infection, became a much larger and significantly more powerful Spore Carrier, now dubbed The Wendigo. The Wendigo is practically invulnerable, barely taking any damage whatsoever from all sources, and even if it cannot out-heal your damage, it will likely kill you before you can put a decent dent into it. If it hasn't yet detected you, it will typically spend it's time roaming around looking for anything to kill, most likely you. It can spot you from a large distance away, and you will likely hear it scream at you before you see it, especially cause of the extremely thick fog covering the area. Your only true option (That doesn't involve cheating) is to run. It does have a couple weakness you can try and exploit. - It's primary weakness is fire. Fire will temporarily scare it off, though again it does little in the way of actual damage. This fear of fire is believed to be evidence that the Wendigo is Joshua Graham. - The Wendigo tends to avoid waterways when idly searching. - It is not active during the early afternoon, although the other spore carriers may still be active. - It will not leave to other areas blocked via loading screens, and also cannot follow you inside buildings located within the area. - As usual for Fallout New Vegas, you can spam the V.A.T.S. button to locate the Wendigo within the fog, though as mentioned before, it is highly likely the Wendigo will detect you before you can spot it.

Great to see you back! One question that occurred to me immediately was, could it be that Folklore Hunter was referencing the phenomena of "Wendigo Psychosis"? On the topic of The Wendigo and knowing that you're a big fan of Lovecraft I would highly recommend reading "The Wendigo" by Algernon Blackwood as it was mentioned by Lovecraft in his essay, Supernatural Horror in Literature.

I love that you approached the Wendigo from its actual roots, showing respect for the Native American beliefs and folklore. That being said, my favourite physical representation of the Wendigo is still the deer-headed one. It looks more interesting than just 'corrupted/undead human' imo.

This is very interesting! i confess i had a very different conception of the Wendigo. i thought it was a curse, that fell upon any one who resorted to cannibalism in the woods. Eating the flesh of another person was the trigger, that would transform a person into a mindless, bestial state. Not a werewolf, and not some antler-bearing, elk-man, but a rabid cannibal.

I take issue with the notion that other monsters are more shallow. Any longstanding creature of myth is going to have both pragmatic and metaphorical implications. Werewolves, for example, are representations of our animal nature which run rampant when we lose control, usually through unrestrained rage. Vampires are simultaneous caricatures of the aristocracy and depictions of the moral decay that follows unrestrained lust. Bigfoot arguably represents the wild ambivalence of nature itself. The wendigo isn't special in this regard. Also, no one owns culture. It's not some furthering of colonial abuse to depict a creature inaccurately. People have the right to depict it however they want and there's nothing morally wrong with that.

Man, you should do more video about the Philosophy of Native American and even, if you have time and resource to research about this, Native Celtic Mythology and their Philosophical meaning. The Briton Celts was colonizes by the Roman, whom also claims massive quantity of lands as private property (like farm lands, mineral mine, The Mean to Produces), turning the Celtic population into serfs or slaves, and the good they produces are own by Roman Oligarch who doesn't lives in Briton. Then the Germanic like Anglo and Saxton whom had their cultures and way of lives colonized by Late Rome, which is too say "Gods Loves the Richest" and colonizes Briton, no different than Yamato Japanese colonizes of native Japanese and Western European colonizes of the America.

One thing... when you say The West you probably mean Werstern Europe? Cause relative to Native Americans "the West" was to the east... I feel like The West starts to function as this vague villainous figure on par with "white culture" and I worry it will soon lose all the meaning behind it, just like we kinda forgot what the n*zizm really was and now we use it to refer to people we disagree with. Except The West as all countries existing in Western Europe isn't even always responsible for things we say The West had done. Sorry for the rant, this isn't even that important and I don't consider it serious mistake or anything.
