The best part of this whole exchange is when Tribbey comes barging in bat in hand, Ainsley jumps and Leo doesn't even blink obviously this sort of thing happens so often that No one in the White House is even surprised anymore. It's these little details that made West Wing so good.

He might have because Oliver Platt got nominated that season for playing Oliver Babish, which was written to be established White House counsel Lionel Tribbey but Larroquette wasn't available so they made him a new White House counsel played by Platt. I suspect that Oliver Babish was never supposed to exist. His introductory scene involves the ham handed exposition about his 'gavel' that everyone criticises. Almost certainly that scene was originally supposed to culminate in Lionel Tribby destroying that tape recorder with his iconic cricket bat, and frankly as much as I loved Babbish, having Tribby as White House Counsel when the Going got really tough would have been a joy to watch.
@Wherethehellarewegoing
@Wherethehellarewegoing 3 ай бұрын
@@dylanc.8437 no argument here. As much as I love Oliver Platt, it would've added some excellent continuity to have Tribby. Plus, how good would it have been to have Bartlet say "I want to know if I've involved 23 people in a massive criminal conspiracy to defraud the public in order to win a presidential election" only for Tribby to say "you're an idiot" or, much more likely "I'm gonna need my bat!!!"

I have always adored John Larroquette's acting. (Hope I spelled his name right). I loved him in Night Court, but always thought that role stunted his opportunities as an actor because he became typecast as a character actor. His brief role on TWW showed off his talents far better than his entire run on Night Court.

This became something of a theme for white house counsels in the West Wing, Lionel Tribbey had his cricket bat, given to him by Queen Elizabeth the 2nd, Oliver Babish had a gavel which was given to his fathers grandfather by a judge LIonel was on his way out the door on holiday when this episode dropped, Olvier was on his way out the door to a holiday/conference. LIonel hit something with his cricket bat just before appearing in Leo's office, Oliver smashes a tappe recorder with his gavel... An interesting paralell that I just noticed.
