In fairness to Josh, a lot about this election threw me for a loop too. I mean, seriously. A Republican winning in Vermont and Maine? A Democrat winning in South Carolina? Put me in Josh's shoes, I'd probably be having a conniption of confusion too!

In the West Wing is appears that "Contract with America" didn't fully materialize and end up leading to major divisions across the country. So you got Democrats winning Texas and Republicans winning California in 2006. Even in the show you can see that the 'good republicans' are actually taking a stand rather than bowing down to obstructionists. It's why Vinick announcing his candidacy is treated as the Godzilla moment for the Democrats.

Kind of an "enemy of my enemy is my friend" scenario: Don't listen to small blogs, only the networks.
