The Whatcom Falls Neighborhood - Bellingham Neighborhood Series

Located on the eastern edge of the city, just south of Whatcom Creek is The Whatcom Falls neighborhood. The neighborhood’s 960 acres are bisected by Lakeway Drive, separating Whatcom Falls Park to the north from the residential area to the south. The main thoroughfares are Lakeway Drive, Yew Street, and Woburn Street.
The Whatcom Falls neighborhood contains primarily single-family residential units, with lots having up to 20,000 square feet. Living in Whatcom Falls is often described as “living near the forest edge,” due to the meandering suburban streets being filled with mature trees and native vegetation. You will find many stream corridors and greenways interspersed throughout the residential areas, allowing for a rich community of wildlife in what would otherwise be an urban setting. Large sections of the neighborhood still remain undeveloped.
Residents in Whatcom falls have great access to a variety of outdoor spaces creating opportunities for a multitude of activities. The 251 acres of Whatcom Falls Park are easily accessible by all residents in the neighborhood. Officially established in 1908, the park consists of a large natural area surrounding the Whatcom Creek riparian corridor. Traveling down one of its many trails will bring you to waterfalls, rock outcrops, and deep ravines. Bloedel Donovan Park is also easily accessible from these trails. Whatcom Falls Park is also home to a fish hatchery, picnic shelters, tennis and basketball courts, as well as one of Bellingham’s best swimming holes. On the southern edge of the neighborhood, you will find access to Whatcom’s Galbraith Mountain, a world-class mountain biking destination holding over 65 miles of single-track spanning over 3,000 acres. Hiking trails are also plentiful in this outdoor area and can be accessed from various points in the southern section of the neighborhood.
Whatcom falls neighborhood also contains Kulshan Middle School, providing additional public space to the residents. Children in the neighborhood will also attend Carl Cozier and Wade King Elementary Schools, and Sehome High School.
The Whatcom Falls neighborhood is unique due to the feel of its nature-filled residential areas, and its easy access to large public outdoor spaces, such as Whatcom Falls Park and Galbraith Mountain. It’s easy to see why 2,000 residents are proud to call this place home.
