I might be a seasoned deer hunter in Aroostook County but I watch as many videos as I can especially you guys since we hunt the same general area but like I tell my kids you're young keep your eyes and ears open ask questions because everybody has a different path to success and it's the small bits and pieces that are the keys to success just take in as much as you can I wish I had this when I first got started hunting

You’re right about Tracking & stories - those bucks give a guy the grand tour of a piece of woods. I’m pretty new at it with just about a decade under my belt but it’s the most fun hunting I’ve ever had.

Another great video guys I’ve been hunted for over 30 years and if was to go to northern Maine I’d ask help from a guide just because of the information you would get to me money well spent like you said then would go on my own.

I really think it would make the whole experience that much better. I hear it on the flip side from guys from Maine who venture into other parts of the U.S. also.

Hello from Maine North Woods Hunter. I am a disabled hunter. I ride hunt or as we say (Heater Hunt) sometimes but it is very expensive to do so because of fuel prices. I have to do a ton of my research before the season and then choose places where I think it may be most effective for me to just sit and wait. Being partially paralyzed I have been force fed patients since my motorcycle accident when I was 23, I am now 57. I still do the best that I can but my options are much less than I once had. After a while you are just truly glad and blessed just to have another season just to be out in God's Country.

Hey! I've watched your channel and excellent job Shane! Good points on making more efficient use of your time. You have an excellent mindset. That's something us hunters have to pay more attention to- our internal narrative. Good luck this fall and keep up with the excellent content👍

My own recipe for timber hunting is to look for places where a ridge and an edge are in close proximity. Scouting these AREAS (not SPOTS) will typically pay off at least 25% of the time. From there you can guess how the clear cuts and topography will channel deer movement. IMO mature bucks will generally avoid crossing a clear-cut during daylight, under normal conditions deer will be higher, if the thermal remains falling they will likely be lower. In hot weather north or west facing slopes tend to be better, when its very cold the pattern is reversed, in high winds ridges perpendicular to the prevailing wind direction can be good.

Nice video Paul your spot on with all you talked about. Hunting big woods is night and vs farm country and a lot of people don’t realize that. (At least here in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula)

Thanks Dan! I thing there are a lot of similarities between northern Maine and Michigan.

I hunt and live on zone 25 where they issue the most doe tags. Most all the land is private land and you need to ask folks and spend more time talking to land owners than scouting. Once you get a set of wooded plots it's a matter of deer pattern and behaviors. The deer in Zone 25 just jump from one patch of wooded area to the other and can jump rivers, roads, and property lines. Its a bit more tricky to hunt this way vs the Big Woods and I've hunted both all my life, but I enjoy the costal hunts because I've got the answers to the tests.

Great conversation! Do either of you guys have a copy of "Hunting in Maine" by Henry Milliken? It was published by L.L. Bean in 1947 and includes a forward written by L.L. himself. I stumbled across a well worn copy at a shop down here on Cape Cod. The writing is a little formal, but there's some great stories about stalking deer through Aroostook County, deer camp tales, and so on. Things haven't changed much -- lots of walking and wool -- and I'm sure you guys would get a kick out of all the similarities to your adventures. Cheers!

I’ve thought about hiring a guide mainly because I can’t walk far with bad knees. Finding a good place to sit might be hard without having help
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast3 ай бұрын
That's always a solid option in my opinion! Takes time, and effort to locate places with deer that would be worth the time to sit. A guide can simplify that for sure 👍

If you're going to hunt northern maine, you have to commit to it for the week. There are plenty of deer from what I saw when I went. A lot more than in the Adirondacks that's for sure.
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast3 ай бұрын
You're right. At least a week! We use to joke at deer camp...You'd spend half the week figuring our where the deer were and what they were doing, then you would actually feel like you were hunting the second half of the week 😂
@nickchernoby15083 ай бұрын
Just go take as much time as you can 2 weeks works well stay in the woods too much time has passed already good luck

When you guys say you are blessed to have a lot of land to hunt, exactly what do you mean? Is all land that is not posted available to the public, or are there certain areas open? In northern NY there is a lot of state land available, but we need permission on any private land or face a trespass. Thanks.
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast3 ай бұрын
Many large tracts of private land are simply open access. But it's not something we take for granted. It could be gone if not appreciated.

With your stalking and tracking hunting styles, do you guys bow hunt? Just curious because that's very different than how you guys hunt. With my very limited time up there hunting, I would think it would be easier bow hunting for bear than deer up there.
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast3 ай бұрын
No, we don't bow hunt. Up here bow hunting is a great way to extend your hunting season (bow hunting starts in October and expanded season starts even sooner). I suppose you could say bear hunting is easier than deer hunting (different methods). Is easier always better???😁 Thanks for watching!
@bushleague34723 ай бұрын
I do still hunt with a bow and it can be done successfully, but I'm not really interested in shooting a buck that early so its more as a scouting tool. I start the season hunting lots of areas, and covering lots of ground. By the second week of Nov I've narrowed it down to 3-4 areas, and I'm hunting much slower. You use the early season to put yourself in the most high percentage areas during the rut. Regularly taking mature bucks by still-hunting is not just a weekend retreat.
@robertgothe48473 ай бұрын
Sure sounds a lot different than sitting in the corner of the woods a top of the river hill on my small family farm in Pennsylvania. Someday I might bring my compass to northern Maine, now that you’ve peaked my curiosity.

How's the Deer population in Aroostook County? I'm noticing down here in Central Maine the Coyote population is growing. It's becoming harder and harder to find land to hunt Coyote especially bait them.
@davidgrant27723 ай бұрын
Part of my problem is I can't walk for crap but I also get restless sitting. My knees are shot to hell but I still push myself. I have certain areas I go to based on conditions. If it's gets hot and they're probably laying down, I got a few spots I go and poke around. If it gets cold, I start heading for food sources. Another thing I absolutely hate is hunting around there. We don't get snow here in Central Maine so I almost always still hunt. I sit for an hour or two then move.
@MaineOutdoorEnthusiast3 ай бұрын
This year, things are looking good! I've seen lots of deer sign all summer. The mild winter helped🙂. Yes, coyotes always seem to be in abundance. Glad to hear you are hunting them! Snow is such a game changer. Success rates in Maine seem to rise when we've got the snow😁
