I've been wanting to try Talisker 10 year, but in my area it runs roughly $85-$90 a bottle at any given store. Then today I walked into the local grocery store and they had it in the clearance cart for $35 because they couldn't sell it... By the way, love it so I am going to buy the rest of their stock.

Absolutely! I’d recommend, if you’re looking for good quality whisky or scotch and want to get a value on the price point to check out small local and or family run liquor stores- up here in Boston we have little corner store liquor stores that don’t always move a lot of the products so they sit on shelves and get discounted over time and they don’t always know the worth of a bottle. Last week I was able to snag a bottle of Laphorig 16 for under $45 which is a steal up here.

Talisker 10 changed my life. The best way I try to describe it to friends, is if you like a nice smokey Miso Soup, you'll love Talisker. Miso Soup is the closest thing I can come up with to describe the experience. It's very savory, makes you forget your drinking alcohol. You will not want to add ice, instead you'll have this knee jerk reaction that you want it to warm it up like your sipping a smoked oyster broth.
@doc81254 жыл бұрын
wonder how it would be as a hot toddy then
@mjmorden4 жыл бұрын
@@doc8125 These island scotches are VERY peaty and salty, so they tend to not do well in mixers. They are wonderful just as "neat" sippers though. Plus, that would a very expensive hot toddy lol. I'm not disparaging anybody's preferences. Just saying, if you are going to mix it in a cocktail anyway, might as well save some money and go towards something like Johnny Walker. But, if you have money to burn, give it a go and let us know how it turned out!! :)
@doc81254 жыл бұрын
@@mjmorden funny thing is ... this is considered "cheap" in Norway, or at least low mid end. Like it costs 50 bucks yes, but when the cheapest Islay costs 40 here (MacLeods Islay Single Malt Whisky) 50 is not really that much of a stepup.

I would also not recommend Talisker as an entry level whisky. It was my very first whisky though. Months later came Laphroaig 10. And yet a little later came Lagavulin 16. Only after that did I start trying less smoky or non-smoky whiskies. Not the best idea in retrospect, but I did get hooked and to no small parts by the Talisker. It still has a very special place in my heart. Laphroaig 10 on the other hand I don't like anymore. I would find it difficult to recommend an entry level smoky whisky to be honest. Starting with smoky blends seems like a good idea. If it had to be single malt, I'd probably say Highland Park 12. The best idea (imo) is still to ask someone with a larger whisky collection to give you a few to try. Then you don't have to start slow but don't have to buy a whole bottle of something you might not like. Not exclusive to smoky whisky!

My first introduction to Islay whiskey was Bowmore 12. I was pleasantly surprised by the smell, but what fascinated me was the sweetness right behind the smoke that was smooth and seemed to linger. I just bought the Talisker 10 and put it on the shelf, started with some other whiskies having some hard cheese on the side while eyeballing the new addition to my collection, then, after about an hour........ I opened, poured, swirled, nosed.... I's like seeing color TV for the first time, the aroma is so much more than even blended whiskies! Whoao! Ok, let's taste................ double whoao.... ! Ok, in short, whatever I paid, if it was double that, still a bargain! It is strong flavoured, but not overbearing, you'll notice immediately it has class, and it lingers..... I had it neat, few drops of filtered water and on clear ice.... like it in all three ways, paired with strongly flavoured soft, medium and hard cheese cuttings, with medium rare steak with some blues music in the background, all in all, a wonderful event!

I've done this comparison... it went like this (and I love peated Scotches): Ardbeg 10, 1st (the richest and most complex, good nose, dark and earthy on pallet with a nice long finish), Laphroaig 10, 2nd (a nice punch in the face of bright peat both on the nose and pallet, great price point as well, about $10-$15 cheaper than the Ardbeg, just not as rich and complex), Lagavulin 16, 3rd ( good nose with some decent smokiness, but on the pallet just very one dimensional, no peaty punch to it and just kind of blah, and considering on average it's $25 more than the Ardbeg and $35-$40 more than the Laphroaig I'll never buy another bottle of Lagavulin 16... It's just a bunch of "Ron Swanson" hype IMO... a "peated" scotch for those who can't handle or don't really like the PEAT but want to be part of that club...

I watched Ralfy's re-review of the Talisker 10 before watching this, and I'm so relieved that he must have just got a bad bottle. I agree with your notes, completely. This has all the aspects that I love most about JW Black, but with more smoke, and it fits into itself a bit better. JWB is kind of all over the place, by comparison. The Talisker 10 has depth and complexity, but it's also more focused. I did prefer with a tiny bit of water, because I like earthy, vegetal smells.

I'm a huge fan of Talisker 10. It's in my top 3 (Laphroaig 10, Port Charlotte 10 and Talisker 10) but it is the most variable of the three. Some less than great bottles do make their way out of there. Also it changes dramatically even from glass to glass from the same bottle. The first pour I ever had was one of the greatest experiences I've ever had with a whisky. A few days later I poured another glass from the same bottle and it was nothing but sulfur and brine. Pretty much undrinkable. What I have found (and yes I know this sounds crazy) is to give the bottle a bit of a shake before pouring. A little agitation seems to bring out the fruit notes I love so much. I'm drinking a glass now from a shaken bottle and it's wonderful.

So I finally got around to picking up a bottle yesterday, and I have to say that it's quite nice and smokey, but I don't get as much depth or complexity or background notes like I get in similarly priced scotches such as Lagavulin, Springbank or Bruichladdich. Kind of on the fence with this one fellas. The 3 aforementioned scotches all kinda blew me away when I first tried them... This one, not so much.

I'm not sure I agree that this isn't a beginner whisky. It's such a great all around whisky if you appreciate smokiness. It's not a harsh smokiness and is mellowed out with a sweetness. (Maybe not the first whisky you try, but if you've tried a few whiskies, _definitely_ give this a shot.)

Congrats on the license for your distillery! Have you decided on a name for the distillery yet? Or one for the actual whiskey you're going to make? Nice whisky to drink for sure, but have you ever tried the Talisker Port Ruighe? I think it's one of the best variations to the Talisker 10 that's affordable (at least here in Europe it is). Trying Talisker 10 for the first time in a while tonight and it really does have a very similar nose brine to Laphroaig 10 but without as much peat... it removes as much iodine and band-aid flavours for some fruit, that mineral taste and just a bit more citrus. Ya I like it a lot but here it's a good 30% more expensive than a Laphroaig.

I remember the first Talisker 10 I tried. It was a tiny 20cl btotle out of a three pack along with Clynelish 14 (also awesome - even if I was unable to grasp its compexities as a Scotch newbie) and Caol Ila 12 (sense a trend here? Also awesome). Its""smoked meat"-yness and camp fire-yness is what mde me fall in love with smoky Scotch. Since then I've moved on to love things like Laphroaig and Lagavulin, but Talisker 10 remains my "smoky whisky spirit eagle" :)

I admit I haven't read all the comments so I apologize if someone asked this...Talisker Storm is often on sale locally for around $40. I haven't bought it yet and I wonder how it measures up to Talisker 10 year old? (I have not yet found anyone with a stock of Talisker from which I can mooch). Unrelated question...have you guys tried Fighting Cock from Heaven Hill? I was surprised how good a bourbon it is!

Go buy it right now. It's freaking awesome. Much preferred to the 10 in my personal taste. I haven't had Fighting Cock. We'll have to track some down!

If watching the beautiful, violent sea while burning a cartload of dried fruits on the shore on a cold early spring morning at sunrise had a taste, this would be it. Talisker 10 is my favorite whisky.

I ve started buying and drinking scotch because of you magnificent bastards.I ve bought and tried over 30 ish ,Talisker 10 or Ardbeg 10 ,cant decide which one is better...and thats 2 are miles ahead of all the other ... dunno why...

If you want to try something different: Pour a dram of Teachers, add a few drops of Aardbeg 10 and a few more drops of Old Pulteney 12. (Trust me)

I've had exactly 8 smokey scotches. Of all of them, Talisker 10 was the only one I ended up really liking.

What's funny is that some people i talked to said to try Talisker 10 as the entry level peated Scotch. I did. And it's my favorite whisky I've had. I've had a lot of different bourbons. A fair amount of Scotches. And some Irish Whiskies. Talisker blows them all out of the water for me!

The king o' drinks, as I conceive it, Talisker, Isla, or Glenlivet! I just opened a bottle of this stuff and as a complete noob, it curled my toes, maybe some day, but not today, all I got was weird medicinal.

Apparently the Dark Storm is created exclusively for travel retail, that's what they told us at the distillery. Obviously, you can get it online. Got some when travelling back home last holiday. If you like the Storm, you should like this one too.
