I don't think she is. I really believe that this is about what might happen if a person with paranoia and auditory hallucinations, is unlucky enough to actually have something impossible, supernatural, and completely irrational, happen to them. Initially, she experiences things that are normal for a person struggling with schizophrenia (or a similar disorder): voices, irrational thoughts...she seems annoyed by the distraction that her auditory hallucinations and delusional, paranoid thoughts cause. She sighs then tries to go back to reading, she checks under the bed, she grabs her revolver, she talks herself through it. All normal reactions toward things she's used to. But her face goes from nervousness to confused terror when she actually SEES her door handle turn, the door open, and the creature appear. The plot is set up to show that the noises, the voice, the paranoia--all are normal for her. But not a totally vivid, visual hallucination that interacts with material reality. What a terrifying thing for someone who already struggles with the difference between imagination and reality! "Just because you're paranoid, don't mean they're not after you" -Nirvana

Holy shit. This was TERRIFYING. The supense was built up perfectly, and I actually loved how there wasn't some sudden screaming jumpscare like some people do, but a slightly more drawn out scare at the end. Plus the voice, and the slight laugh... Damn, this was good.

Amazing, absolutely scared the crap outta me. The ending I expected a jump scare but you took that in a totally different direction. The one thing that stood out to me in a negative light is the fact that she had a gun. She said she won't go back to "that place" witch seemingly hinted at an insane asylum. If she had a history of mental disabilities she wouldn't be able to purchase a weapon but I'm probably over examining great film!

I really enjoyed this film. The cinematography was fantastic, I liked the use of the vertigo effect at 1:19. One thing I love in horror films is when the suspense builds up to something legitimately scary, not the cheap jump scare template that modern films employ. This film built up to something scary, and it was incredibly satisfying and terrifying when I got to see the antagonist. I would compare this to The Babadook: In the Babadook, there is so much mystery and terror built up around the character, that when it is revealed, many an audience member go to the bathroom in their trousers. Danny, you were able to accomplish this same feeling, but in less than three minutes. I give you a gold star.

Honestly this is a formula that a lot of horror movies lack. They think gore and loud noises are gonna be scary. They need scarier looking monsters, they need to longer exposure of a certain area where the monster is moving toward (I.e. the bedroom door)! It keeps us from wanting to look away.
