The White Heather Club - 10th October 1960 Edition
Originally broadcast BBC Television 10th October 1960
Of the few editions that exist, it is a real treat that this edition survived being a prime example of the show for many reasons.
Club stalwarts The Joe Gordon Folk Four perform one of their signature songs 'The Work of the Weavers', the most famous dancers Dixie Ingram and Isobel James are in attendance, Andy performs an animated version of 'That's The Reason Noo I Wear The Kilt', James Urquhart delivers 'Marie's Wedding', Ian Powrie and his Band never sounded better and as a finale Andy delivers 'The Battle's O'er' his soon-to-be number-one follow-up to 'A Scottish Soldier'.

Its incredible how some folk today belittle this wonderful old style of traditional enjoyment. It brings back incredible memories for me of a time when life seemed so much simpler - and more sincere.

A wonderful combination of the old celtic clans. With Irish and Scottish ancestry you should be a wonderful singer AND an excellent fighter in time of need.

When my family left Ireland for work in England . There was no connection from RTE Television to BBC . So this lovely programme from Scotland was our only connection on the television to Celtic culture . Thank you White Heather club . Some of the Songs and many of the dances were part of Irish tradition too.

Brilliant, talented people, one and all - singers, musicians, accompanists, dancers. Such a pity that Scotland has turned its back on this type of entertainment. We certainly haven't found anything to replace it. Like Ireland, we should be proud of our heritage and encourage it. Scots only become traditionalists when they move abroad. Visitors love this type of show, but its almost impossible to find anythere these days because theatres etc take their lead from TV and if it isn't there then it isn't anywhere. Isobel James is the only prominent name on this who is still with us.

I am of Irish heritage and yes we kept our culture . But WOKE is ruining for us also. Scots are Celts too . We are losing our culture to something that is not us . I am not racist . But WOKE forgets us .

I like that they film the actual dance steps, rather than focussing on plastic fake grins.

What joyous television. Today's so-called entertainment TV producers would do well to watch this.

I must have been born in the wrong generation. My contemporaries prefer Duran Duran, Boy George, Madonna, the Pet Shop Boys, or Michael Jackson, but I've always much preferred this!

Do you have any editions of Scotch Corner from 1972 to 74...

I don’t know for certain, but I would be surprised if any existed in STV’s archive. Scotch Corner was shown at lunchtime and sometimes repeated the same day as part of “tea-time” TV. They were then most probably wiped after these transmissions.

And now at New Year we have bands that sound Irish -screeching women singers- BBC Scotland seem to be embarrassed with this normal entertainment - the only time they show clips of this is on shows hosted by smug, talentless "comedians" - that are as funny as root canal work !
