It was one of the greatest and most popular shows that BBC Scotland ever produced and it showcased the formidable talents of the likes of Andy Stewart, Jimmy Shand and Joe Gordon. In the '50s and '60s it was top of the Scottish pops - over ten million viewers once tuned in to the Hogmanay edition of The White Heather Club.
Here some of the original performers get together for a nostalgic reunion to look back on the glory days of this abiding piece of Scottish television history.
So raise a dram once more to this joyful Scottish ceilidh (song and dance party to the Sassenach) and its bountiful enduring hits like A Scottish Soldier. It's a tribute to the lyric gems of Scotland - and particularly, to the charismatic talents of the late Andy Stewart, the kilted minstrel who became the King of Hogmanay.

I used to watch this programne without fail. I looked forward to hogmanay every year. I'd dance to the music along with the white Heather dancers on TV. Happy memories, but what has happened? Nowadays its hellish and has been for several years. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Only six White Heather Club programmes survive, and what a shame. The songs, in particular, are part of our social history. Everyone remembers Sir Billy Connolly’s “Welly Boot Song”, but how many know the song that inspired it?

I can remember as a 5 year old child in 1961 along with my older brother, singing Scottish soldier to my grandparents, with my aunt playing the piano.

I lived in early sixties in Singapore with my family. My father , in the RAF , was a Fifer and one of the eight LP’s we had was The White Heather Club, so I grew up with Jimmy Shane, Andy Stewart, , The McGregors etc from 2 years old.

When I was little I used to dance to they music

I danced to it too every time it was on the TV. Sadly nowadays we don't see programmes like this.

We had a Scottish teacher at school who taught us dancing and always watched this programme

Hi all. My mum was a dancer in the white heather club, she was 22 I believe when she started there, possibly from the start? She is one of the smaller dancers her real name was Rosemary Manly (stage name Cindy Stewart).she was desperate to find one of her dancer friends Avril Fleming who I believe moved to Australia if any one knows these names get in touch, I’m the son. Thanks
