@justinmsc5

It's a rule problem, not an umpire problem. Every baseball player is taught that you have to do everything you can to get out of the way. Even if it's impossible to get out of the way, it's your fault. The only "players" who don't know this are kids pre-little league, and super casuals.

if the man playing short stop was the only guy able to catch the ball and the runner interfered with him then I'd say yeah call interference, however, at least 4 guys COULD have caught that ball: pitcher, 3rd baseman, 2nd baseman, short stop. and 3 of them would not have been interfered with in the play. so I call BS on the call.
@MattZRJSRoxy
@MattZRJSRoxy 8 күн бұрын
@@JamesShelnutt2 It's a ridiculous ruling either way but the top poster of this comment thread is right that it's the whole point of the rule. Just 1 fielder gets the protection of fielding a batted ball which means if the runner doesn't do enough to avoid him then it's interference.

Ok, while the call may be correct, the rule is terrible. I dislike the White Sox, but the rule is BS. Henderson barely touched him, just slightly altered his path, and got under the ball with plenty of time. Vaughn was just walking back to the bag. That is a terrible rule.

@@DonaldDump2024 Given there's a lot of precedent for this call and the MLB hasn't commented or modified the notes/FAQ (for umpires) at all, can't really say it's a terrible ruling. Just adding words like "that affects or had a high likelihood to affect the outcome" would signal what to do for umpires. So I'd say terrible rule, not terrible ruling. Tons of precedent, and players are explicitly trained as if this is how it'll be called.

basically the fielder has the right of way to field ANY batted balls and yes this includes on Infield Fly situations because even if an Infield Fly is declared which means the batter is out, the fielder still has to field the ball. Now because of that, it falls to the runner to avoid the fielder, they can't do anything to hinder or impede him from fielding, intent isn't required as long as a runner doesn't have contact with a base he's entitled to.

@@LemonStir Tell me someone doesn't know the rules without telling me that they don't know the rules despite your long comment trying to claim as such, you still don't know the rules. The fielder has the right of way with FIELDING any batted balls no matter what so it falls to the runner to avoid the fielder. So you are the one who clearly doesn't have any brain cells, the Umpires are enforcing the rules as they are written which is their job, it is NOT their job to determine what the intent of a rule is, the rules are MLB rules and that's their job to change the rules if they don't like something Get a clue, use your head and actually READ the rules as they are written because that's what an Umpire is doing, not your made-up definition of an Umpire being able to decide what the intent of a rule is.

Baseball is so idiotic... fun to watch highlights, but the game itself is too damn slow and when you factor in the downright stupidity of the umpires, it's actually dragging the game into the abyss, to the point where nobody will watch this stuff.

can't blame this ruling on the Umpires since they were enforcing the rules as they are written so blame the rule on MLB

Didn’t realize you can’t walk back to the bag after the fly rule was called, even so when it’s called it’s an out regardless, so technically he could have not caught it and nothing would’ve happened

That is not true. The infield fly rule does not result in a "dead ball" situation, the runners may advance, at their own risk.

You can walk back if you don't interfere. AntonelliBaseball advises the runner to return to the bag ASAP. There's no advantage to casually walking back like that, and if the runner is standing on the base there's no interference.

What is the infield fly rule?
@MattZRJSRoxy
@MattZRJSRoxy 7 күн бұрын
Basically it can only apply under certain circumstances. There can't be 2 outs, there can be 1 out or no outs for 1 of the Infield Fly conditions to be met but the other condition has to do with runners, there must be runners on 1st and 2nd or the bases must be loaded if these conditions are met, BOTH conditions then Umpires have to be on the lookout for an Infield Fly situation. Let me quote something from the MLB website however I'll reformat it a bit so it's not a direct copy and paste "An infield fly is any fair fly ball (not including a line drive or a bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort when 1st and 2nd OR 1st, 2nd and 3rd are occupied, before 2 men are out. In these situations, the umpire will declare "infield fly" for the benefit of the baserunners as soon as it is apparent that the fly ball qualifies as an infield fly. The batter is out even if the ball is not caught, and the baserunners can advance at their own risk. If the ball is caught, the baserunners can attempt to advance as they would on a typical ball caught in the air."
