It's a rule problem, not an umpire problem. Every baseball player is taught that you have to do everything you can to get out of the way. Even if it's impossible to get out of the way, it's your fault. The only "players" who don't know this are kids pre-little league, and super casuals.

@JamesShelnutt217 күн бұрын
if the man playing short stop was the only guy able to catch the ball and the runner interfered with him then I'd say yeah call interference, however, at least 4 guys COULD have caught that ball: pitcher, 3rd baseman, 2nd baseman, short stop. and 3 of them would not have been interfered with in the play. so I call BS on the call.
@MattZRJSRoxy8 күн бұрын
@@JamesShelnutt2 It's a ridiculous ruling either way but the top poster of this comment thread is right that it's the whole point of the rule. Just 1 fielder gets the protection of fielding a batted ball which means if the runner doesn't do enough to avoid him then it's interference.

@justinmsc518 күн бұрын
@@DonaldDump2024 Given there's a lot of precedent for this call and the MLB hasn't commented or modified the notes/FAQ (for umpires) at all, can't really say it's a terrible ruling. Just adding words like "that affects or had a high likelihood to affect the outcome" would signal what to do for umpires. So I'd say terrible rule, not terrible ruling. Tons of precedent, and players are explicitly trained as if this is how it'll be called.

What is the infield fly rule?
@MattZRJSRoxy7 күн бұрын
Basically it can only apply under certain circumstances. There can't be 2 outs, there can be 1 out or no outs for 1 of the Infield Fly conditions to be met but the other condition has to do with runners, there must be runners on 1st and 2nd or the bases must be loaded if these conditions are met, BOTH conditions then Umpires have to be on the lookout for an Infield Fly situation. Let me quote something from the MLB website however I'll reformat it a bit so it's not a direct copy and paste "An infield fly is any fair fly ball (not including a line drive or a bunt) which can be caught by an infielder with ordinary effort when 1st and 2nd OR 1st, 2nd and 3rd are occupied, before 2 men are out. In these situations, the umpire will declare "infield fly" for the benefit of the baserunners as soon as it is apparent that the fly ball qualifies as an infield fly. The batter is out even if the ball is not caught, and the baserunners can advance at their own risk. If the ball is caught, the baserunners can attempt to advance as they would on a typical ball caught in the air."
