Townshend was/is definitely one of the best rock guitar players ever. I think that his guitar playing tends to overshadowed by his songwriting -- and his stunt of smashing his guitars in his early years was also a distraction!

Instead he was brilliant at lightning-quick switches between rhythm and lead guitar -- with Entwistle and Moon as the perfect co-creators. He, Moon and Enwistle had been playing live since they were teenagers, and they could almost read each other's minds. When he did play lead, his solos were short, crisp and solid. "Saying a lot in a short period of time.".
