I don't think there are enough studio takes surrounding this album to be able to expand it into a box set, not like with their Who's Next album, maybe live recordings from around the time of this album, but on the other hand, there may not be.

I always plan on picking up the super deluxe version of The Who's albums, then wind up settling for the vinyl release. Did that with Tommy, Quadrophenia, and The Who Sell Out. This might just be the one I actually pick up. Thanks for the details!

It’s difficult to name just 1 greatest album of all-time, however, this album has always been in my top 10 and quite frankly, I believe it’s got to be in my top 5 today as we speak. For years when asked, I usually have in no particular order, this album along with Zeppelins Physical Graffiti, Jethro Tull’s Songs from the wood, Pink Floyd’s Dark side of the moon, With consideration to albums like Jimi Hendrix Electric Ladyland, Rush Moving pictures, Genesis The lamb lies down on Broadway, Iron Maiden Somewhere in time, Pink Floyd the Wall, Led Zeppelin’s 4th album, Beatles Sgt. peppers, Deep Purple Machine head, Black Sabbath Paranoid, Van Halen’s 1st album, Fleetwood Mac Rumours, Ac/Dc Back in black, Rolling Stones Tattoo you, Yes Fragile, Iron Maiden Number of the beast and a few others. These are just my opinion and in no particular order

I saw this earlier this morning. I don’t normally get these super box sets, but like you, this is Who’s Next. I already have Townshend’s Lifehouse Chronicles from 2000. But it looks like there are a lot here to make the “dogs bollocks” version worth it. I just need to see what bodily organs I can get the most money for. Thanks for the vid, as usual. Cheers!!

Betokening the question,would this lavish retail splurge really offer anything extra to a fine album of tunes (mostly) that can't be appreciated in current form or at the least contained within one of those nifty little cardboard offerings that can easily accomodate a trio or so of discs but not obviously at the usurious price points proferred ?

That's a very good question. I'm especially interested in the Steven Wilson remixes, 5.1, and Atmos. I'm going to think on it. Plus, see if any of the retailers are gonna carry it at a lower price.

To anybody complaining about the $300 price tag, you’re getting 11 CD’s + tons of other stuff, and lots of material that was previously unreleased. Compare that to Pink Floyd’s Dark Side 50th boxset that costs $300 with absolutely no previously unheard material. Nobody is forcing you to buy this, you’re literally on the internet where you will be able to hear it for free. As a fan, this is great news to hear.

Sorry but £300 is little excessive. Robert Fripp released a 32 disc boxset last year, covering 4 albums over a five year period for approximately £150. So £300 for this does look a little like profiteering.

In his memoir Townshend mentions how he tried on this album to mix hard rock with softer moments to enhance the listener’s experience. Then with the later success of AC/DC he realised not all listeners needed the contrast!

I refuse to believe any of this extra codswallop is better than the original album. I struggled to pay £37/6 for it in 1971, and I'd struggle to pay £1000 in 2023 (or what ever Pete wants this time around). How many times does an album need remastering? Sounded OK to me.

The Who has a lot of shelved projects and releases that fans would like to see and hear that are/were unreleased for seemingly no reason. There’s no reason why Kilburn and Coliseum should’ve waited to be released until 2008, there’s no good reason why Young Vic should’ve waited until 2003 etc. As a Who fan, you should be happy you can hear/see anything new no matter how recent it was released. It’s all history

Saw The Who at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto in 1980. They played 4 tracks from WHO'S NEXT. I'll take a look at the more affordable versions of these new box set collections.

The original 'lifehouse' idea was about the collective experience of being bound to other people through the direct experience of music, but the more Townshend tried to shape the story through song the less the worked, the songs pulled against the idea. 'Lifehouse' was originally described as being 'like a Brabazon plane' - a great modern design for an aeroplane that proved incapable of flight.'. The price of the ticket for this clear out of the vaults means that listeners won't care if it the songs and ideas take off, or sound grounded. They won't be getting their money back.

I grew up with this album literally as a teenager. When I first bought it, I listened to it on a mono portable record player and on my dad’s stereogram. It rocked then and still does. I now have a CD version which has some added tracks (previously unreleased) and other takes etc none of which I play simply because they are rubbish compared to the tracks on the album. The recording was originally produced by Kit Lambert, Glyn Johns and Chris Stamp which is good enough for me. The album includes a booklet which explains all about the Lifehouse project. If you want to hear the tracks performed live most appear on other albums and recordings. This album does not need to be padded out with surplus material nor venerated as a shrine object. It just needs to be listened to.

I go along with that. Whenever I see "demos" I think I'll listen to them once then never again. And there are a lot of demos and "sessions" on this. The live shows, ok, but I imagine there's a lot of similar stuff available, so is it special enough to shell out for...? Remixes and remasters? When your equipment is one step up from two tin cans and a string, like mine, they're not really a big draw! I'm undecided.

Most boomer bands have archives full of unreleased material that “wasn’t good enough”, yet there’s tons of botched, unlistenable, unwatchable releases everywhere from the same bands. 300 for 11 discs + boxset goodies is really not a bad price at all. You’re on the internet where you will be able to hear it for free once it’s out, there’s really nothing to complain about.

It’s amazing how unexcited I am by this. The whole point of Who’s Next’s greatness is that they completely abandoned Townshend’s unwieldy, hopelessly convoluted “Lifehouse” project and boiled the songs down to a bare handful of only the most magnificent, killer tracks and released them as a simple rock album in encumbered by any pretentious, confused connecting storyline. Any “expansion” wading back into that morass would only dilute the album. All I would really want is a 2nd disc containing just the previously released Lifehouse-derived singles of the era and Odds & Sods tracks, such as “relay”, “Join Together” and “Pure & Easy”.

Long time Who fan, always been fascinated by the Lifehouse project. It is a bit disappointing that among all the stuff coming out that we don't get something approximating the Lifehouse album as originally intended including as much as possible versions of songs performed by The Who - ideally for me sticking to post-Tommy pre-Quadrophenia fare rather than including later material like Slip Kid, Who Are You as we had in the Lifehouse Chronicles. Curious to know if anyone has similar (or even opposing) views

Now, that's more like it! The only nitpick I have is that I already own Townshend's The Lifehouse Chronicles box set from 2000, which includes 4 discs of music + 2 discs of a radio play. It was one of their most remarkable albums when Pete Townshend's songwriting reached it's peak. It was here that Pete became a multi-instrumentalist, playing various keyboard instruments here. but could also play drums, and various wind instruments, yet was still only known as the group's lead guitarist. But they never needed many sessionists on their studio recordings, apart from occasional string arrangements, as Pete could play most of it, by multi-tracking. But he claimed he was self-taught at all the instruments he played, and that he never had any formal training. This is a very belated 50th anniversary release, and that they are lucky that their material here is still in copyright, even though it is now over 50 years old. But this was due to the copyright terms being extended to 70 years, under what became known as Cliff's Law, obviously named after Cliff Richard who fought hard to get the copyright term extended, Roger Daltrey being one of Cliff's supporters, although it only added an extra 20 years of copyrights to everything from 1963 onward, the copyright terms being extended 50 years later in 2013.

While I've always thought that Who's next is the greatest ever rock album, I bought the vinyl, I bought the cd, I bought the cd with the extra tracks and I won't be buying this. I'm not really interested in demos - I want the finished article. Ok a few extra finished tracks are always good, often left off an older album because of vinyl limitations. I might buy a sympathetic remaster - just give the tapes to Stephen Wilson to work his magic on!

I always try to pick up remasters and typically they're better than the original but the biggest problem I have with remasters is that they lack the punch compared to an album that is put out today. While remastering why can't they accomplish this? Volume, bass lines, etc. I always find it lacking and then am sorely disappointed with it. So I'm hoping this current remaster of 'Who's Next' is better than their last remaster from 2008 (the last one that I have).

This is basically just everything The Who recorded after Tommy and before Quadrophenia. Pretty much all this stuff is out there in good sound quality. I don't need yet another remastering by Jon Astley, who is probably about 75 years old and shouldn't be working anymore.

A lot of fans have been patiently waiting for this for years, maybe even decades. $300 is a bit ngl, but prices will go down on the used market and there’s cheaper options.

This is a super deluxe, and super deluxes are aimed towards hardcore fans and collectors who want to hear anything new after hearing the same shit for years. The stuff being released guaranteed will be cool for some casual fans to discover as well. A TON of this stuff is not on a (at least circulating) bootleg, this is stuff straight from the official archives. If you’ve gotta keep asking “who cares?” This boxset isn’t for you. You don’t even have to buy it, nobody is forcing you.

People are acting like The Who constantly is trying to take people’s money with these re-releases, but it’s been 20 years since the last Who’s Next Deluxe and I doubt they’re gonna put out another one any time soon. The Who’s mixes differ a lot between remixes, re-releases, even which country CD’s were pressed in.

Super Deluxe boxsets are usually more aimed towards diehard fans and collectors. The Who aren’t everyone’s cup of tea but in my opinion during peak Keith Moon-era they’re one of the most entertaining bands I’ve ever heard or seen.

I love The Who. As a teen, I listened to their albums over and over. But the problem with them is lack of material. 1964 to 2023. Minus live, soundtracks, and compilations, they put out 12 albums. Lack of material, so yet again compile stuff for a cash grab, (and Pete sold all his publishing already).

@et2petty, Same thing with Pink Floyd, they only put 15 studio albums out over their long career and 2 of them were soundtracks and one outtake album Endless river. When you compare these two bands with the likes of Jethro Tull, Yes, Motörhead, Hawkwind etc, quantity was not their strong suit but quality wise they made up for it. The Who and the Floyd are my two favourite bands so over the years l had to suck it up…regards

You’ll never find anyone put Who’s Next on one of these lists, it’s nowhere near the worst album covers ever produced.
