So now you know Keith Moon -- 'perhaps' the greatest drummer of all time -- certainly an inspiration to Neil Pert and every other drummer in the history of the universe. Famously in 1973 Keith Moon, after enjoying some elephant tranquilizers with his booz and drugs, passed out in concert. So Pete Townsend asked if anyone in the audience could play the drums for the rest of the concert. And some guy got up on stage, Scot Halpin, and played the rest of the set! .... Ah, the 70's.

He'd passed out drunk after collecting a massive royalty check, something like £6 million; he encountered Steve Jones and Paul Cook from the Sex Pistols at the pub. They were cool with him, but talking with them made him even more sure that the Who were dinosaurs, sellout. The check was still in his pocket ("Looked back on my busy day" "11 hours in the Tin Pan", like Tin Pan Alley, where songwriters used to work way back in the Sinatra days, etc). When the cop let him off, he was belligerent and hollered "Who the fuck are YOU?!" The Rolling Pin was a pub, so he went and continued drinking. He felt unworthy of all the adulation-- "I spill out like a sewer hole, and still receive your kiss... " and wrote this song with a massive hangover. The whole Who Are You album is about his feelings of being obsolete and a hack. The first song is "New Song", all about him pulling a new song out of his ass, loading it up with what he felt were Who trademark cliches, and people would automatically love it without thinking.

"I know there's a place you walked, where love falls from the trees. My heart is like a broken cup, I only feel right on my knees. I spit out like a sewer hole, yet still receive your kiss. How can I measure up to anyone now after such a love as this?" Pete Townshend said this song is a prayer to God. Just like the song Bargain is.

I knew this one was coming... so great to see tour reaction. My fav bamd. I'd suggest the next songs: 1. "Love reign o'er me" from the rock opera Quadrophenia. Closing song. Probably Roger Daltrey's best vocals and Keith Moon's most symphonic drumming. 2. "Baba O'Riley", from same album as "Won't get fooled again". Some iconic lines also in the lyrics, you will identify immediately. 3. "Young man blues" live version from the Isle of Wight concert in 1970. To fully appreciate what The Who were at their prime. 4. "Pinball wizard", "Oberture" from the (first) rock Opera, "Tommy". A must listen in its entirety. 5. "Bargain", personally one of my favorites, less epic in appearance but deep lyrics and some of Keith Moon's best drumming ever. 6. "The real me" from Quadrophenia. One of the best bass playings ever by the quiet man John Enwistle. 7. "Behind blue eyes". 8. "I can see for miles" 9. "My generation" 10. "You better you bet" And down the rabbit hole you go! Peace out!

This song was a response to all the punk bands rising in the late 70s who were calling bands like the Who, “dinosaur rock” and commercial rock. Pete was reminding them that the Who was the original punk band - angsty young people could go to their shows and see the Who venting all their pent up anger, scowling and smashing up instruments on stage.

You've HEARD it... now you're LISTENING to it, focused on it, appreciating it, and that's awesome. That's how we used to listen to this music, 'back in the day'. Entire albums at one go, especially in the '70s when so many of the best Progressive Rock albums were 'concept' albums and were meant to be listened to like that, first Side A, then Side B. They told *stories*. These days, most songs are one-offs, meant to be downloaded from Spotify or the Apply store, auto-tuned and neutered and designed for mass appeal instead of integrity.

@@glynissigrist2442 Not true. This song is based on a day in the life of Pete Townshend. It began with a very long meeting dealing with royalties for his songs: "Eleven hours in the Tin Pan, God, there's got to be another way." The "Tin Pan" he is referring to is "Tin Pan Alley" which is the name given to the collection of New York City-centered music publishers and songwriters who dominated the popular music of the United States. After this excruciating meeting he received a large check for royalties, left and went to a bar and got completely drunk. In that bar he encountered Paul Cook and Steve Jones of The Sex Pistols, who thought very highly of Pete for paving the way for punk rock music. Townshend was conflicted because he feared The Who had sold out, and seeing The Sex Pistols, who were icons of rebellion, exacerbated him even more. Pete left that bar and passed out in a random doorway in Soho (a part of New York). A policeman recognized him ("A policeman knew my name") and being kind, woke him and and told him, "You can go sleep at home tonight (instead of a jail cell), if you can get up and walk away." Pete's response: "Who the f--k are you?" >>

Gordon Blair I hear what you say and agree the reference to Tin Pan Alley and Soho and Pete Townsend being in New York at the time but he mixed American and English terms in the lyrics with reference to the ‘underground’ and ‘tube’ both of which are definitely in London and are English terms. That is why the misunderstanding about SoHo and Soho.
