Not the best performance by The Who, Pete was drunk as fuck, Roger's voice was a bit fucked up and his scream was a bit off, only John Entwistle was powerfull, and Keith was just, well-being Keith. If you're gonna love a band, you have to hear the good and the bad live performances, this one wasn't that good.

LeToplache007 indeed but credit to that monstrous rhythm section, Entwistle and Moon covering for Pete so well in this performance the song seems almost intact and just as powerful even with an out of tune and minimal guitar

A n awful performance....and that's why we love 'em. They're either terrible or the greatest rock band on the planet. I was there in Manchester 1973. The greatest rock band I've ever seen. I was privileged.

Possibly not the best mix, but a great performance none the less. As Sun Cat suggests, with Keith, it always seemed like everything was going to fall off the rails. That was part of the reason THE WHO were/are the best live band ever. Good to see this.
@JohnSmith-bq2de
@JohnSmith-bq2de 5 жыл бұрын
John Entwistle's bass sound is absolutely immense.. so powerful as to be able to cover for much of Pete's troubles in this performance that would ruin any other band's performance. On another note, this is probably the tightest I've seen/heard Keith with this song.

It's interesting, most of the time you see footage or pics from 73, Keith has that full second row of drums that he added, so this must be in early 73 as he's playing the same set up he'd used up until this point. I wish there was more live footage of them from 71 and 72, plenty of audio but not much film footage. Well at least we have shows like this, the less famous stuff that's still as great as their more famous gigs.

I never heard Townsend play this song on an SG before. It sounds thin compared to when he played this song on a Les Paul. It could just be the way it was recorded, of course. I could barely hear Entwistle which almost never happens (or should happen) on these videos of The Who.
@lapelcelery42
@lapelcelery42 7 жыл бұрын
It's definitely a bad mix. I personally prefer Pete's SG sounds to anything he ever got from the LP (IMHO the LP's have much less articulation) but this is not a good sound setup at some stage in the chain.

@@lapelcelery42 I may be wrong, but I think they were using an in-house PA for this gig that was no match for what they were used to. Pete's Hiwatt backline would normally be cranked to the point where it broke up naturally, but here it sounds like it's barely on.

Townshend seems unhappy with the way things are going through this entire concert. Something's wrong with the chemistry that night. A pity that of all concerts of 1972/early 1973 (the Who's Next / Quodrophenia transition period), this is the one we have good video of. Hopefully Paris 1972 or more of the Stockholm concert (there's a short clip on youtube) will still turn up some day.

Looking closely at Pete, it looked like he couldn't get the volume up to where the rest of the band was playing? in a couple of songs he looked like he was telling them to turn up the volume and they wouldn't or couldn't and that might have caused him to shut himself down a little (?) as Pete is in need of his Power-Cords to be happy? the sound seem way down to me?

Pete seems disengaged...like he's pissed off or upset about something. However...I like his "less is more" guitar playing in this performance. I do get a bit tired of the expected power chords in this song. As often as the Who stretched out and improvised on their songs, they always played this one pretty much the same every time. I like hearing the song with Pete, even if distracted, distraught, or disgusted, actually playing the song as if it's new and ripe for playing around with.

Pete was having major problems with his Specials this whole show, they were constantly coming out of tune, also when Pete was trying to tune the band would start a song. He was pissed this whole show. The soundboard mix is poor also.

I agree with some other posts that it's still awesome because you can hear Moonie and Entwistle very well. Especially Moonie, because there are plenty of show that have his volume too low.

Also it's noteworthy how new it was to play along with pre-recorded accompaniment (regular occurrence today, I've been at rap concerts where the performer was literally yelling over the original track, vocals and all), let alone one of a synthesizer. The band sounds tame, almost tentative having to play along with it. Not only was it new, it was unheard of. And it was a task for the least likely of drummers. But it actually wrangles Moon and forces him to play in time and he sounds heavier, more on point. I also love that it's a non/pre-metal song with a scream written into it

Pete never could play this live properly. it just does not stand up to the studio recording he's missing most of the parts. I hate to say it. plus his guitar tone is miserable. he's out of tune, his volume is low and he's not achieving nearly enough distortion to even approximate the record. not sure what went wrong something went horribly wrong. that being said the rest of the band sounded great.
