John Entwistle is by far one of the most influential bassists in rock. If you want to here a song that really showcases his skill and puts the bass in the forefront I'd recommend checking out their song "The Real Me" off of their 1973 concept album "Quadrophenia". His bass work on that track is nasty to say the least.

I often think about favorite bands... there are so many, that rating them doesn't really even have meaning, different styles, different genres, sometimes different lineups for the same "band"... anyway, I NEVER think of The Who. Not a "favorite". They are up there for me, lots of songs I like, lots of respect, when I hear their music I almost always enjoy it. But if I could try the rating thing enough to make "tiers", they would be on the second tier. That's very high. Believe me, for me, someone who is 51, who went to college for a music degree (initially, that changed), someone who has consistently listened to music from many genres my whole life, second tier is way, way up there. Why am I spamming your post with this ridiculous reply? Well, here's the point. When I listen to that song, I.... (sorry, choking up, yes, seriously)... when that song is playing, The Who are kind of my favorite band ever. Like, that song vetoes everything else in my brain, in my feelings, everything. So all of that to say, uh, yeah. I agree. I agree very much. As a person who loves "anthemic" music, epic, emotional music, that song is at the top of whatever "not rating" measurement I can imagine. Glad you mentioned it. I need to be reminded of that song more often. Excuse me, I need to go listen to something. *edit* Tracy's reply was better. *edit #2* I'm back. I personally think the tone/warmth you're talking about here is a by product of how the amps were built back in the day, using tubes, they all seemed to impart that warmth to a song
Yeah, but it wasn't just tube amps that gave the 'warmth' to the sound. In those days, every single piece of gear was analog and was recorded on tape. That's how you get the richest, warmest sound possible. Digital has come a long way but there are many reasons why analog recording still can't be beaten to this day.

"The parting on the left is now parting on the right and the beards have all grown longer overnight" could have been written today if Rock still existed as new music. Kieth Moon is probably the best drummer ever and he was a nut. Pete Townsend, along with Stevie Wonder, was one of the early adopters of synthesizers and a founding father of electronic music and built his own rig in 1971 to record on this song. Townsend and Lindsey Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac are also two of the most overlooked guitarists in Rock history. The Who also set a world record in 1976 as the loudest band at 126 decibels, a measurement that was taken 100' from the stage and is also why both Daltrey and Townsend are almost completely deaf today. They held that record for 8 years until Manowar broke it. Townshend later helped establish the charity HEAR (Hearing Education And Awareness For Rockers).
@DeosPraetorian2 жыл бұрын
rock still exists as new music
@WaymoresBlues2 жыл бұрын
@@DeosPraetorian Hardly enough to matter and rarely of any quality worth listening too. The biggest difference is the fact that the majority of the earlier legendary hard rock bands were creating new forms of rock music influenced by the soul that is to be found in the music of those even earlier blues artists. Today most of the rock music is either a mimicry of earlier rock music or has that navel gazing self involved dreariness which is a pale substitute for having any actual soul. But I do understand how some latch key kids raised by single mothers might find that type of loathsome and useless introspection attractive, but none of these current artists could be remotely considered breaking any new ground. Somebody already did it and did it better. Rock used to be the biggest sellinf genre of music but it fell behind hip hop/rap years ago and is also behind Country music as far as new releases go. Most of rocks popularity at all today is from classic rock and even that fan base is aging away only to become like fans of the blues (and Willie Nelson) where more people admire it than actually listen to it.

When you listen to interviews with the big name musicians from the 70's and people ask then who the bands were in the late 60's that really threw down live...they invariably say The Who. Maximum R&B was their slogan and they made it way of playing that would be emulated by all those that followed. The trick to listening to The Who, is to not get distracted by one of Rock's greatest drummers, or Pete's incredibly powerful playing, or Roger's amazing voice and just focus on the bass. One of the most influential bass players of early rock, The Ox. The guy is just constantly going off, all while supporting and carrying the groove. Nothing else like it at the time, except Chris Squire from Yes. Once you feel you've gotten to "know" a Who song, try focusing on just the bass. You'll find a who nother song buried down in there. One of my favorite rock songs. "Meet the new boss, same as the old boss" pretty much sums up the message in the song. Everybody fights, votes and moves towards a new regime, or way in governing and then we find out it was an illusion because nothing really changes. Human beings, including leaders are going to act in their own self interest or are just flawed and............ again, nothing really changes.

Rock music mixed with an auto-generated synthesizer loop in 1971.... *awesome!*

It's actually not a loop. Pete was playing it.

"The Real Me", "Who Are You?", "Love Reign O'er Me" are all epic like this, and they have great more funny pop songs in the 1960s. "A Quick One While He's Away", live from the Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus, is them preforming live at the top of their game.

Oh man you guys have to see them do it live. Pete Townshend is a guitar genius and a f-ing madman. Its for real legendary 👊

That warmth you “feel” in a lot of these 70s tunes is down to the mixing desks they were using at the time. Especially the Harrison consoles that added the warm, deep sound due to the way it was wired and the amps they used. Something that’s definitely been lost over time as we’ve moved to more digital setups.

Keith Moon was known for rarely using a High Hat on his kit. he would play off Pete Townsend at live shows. A true phenom.

You should watch the Who perform this live at Sheparton Studios. The drumming is incredible , as is Roger's scream. Their energy is amazing!

Keith Moon (The Who) plus John Bonham and Neil Peart are my top 3 drummers of all time not in any order. If you can find a Live Who song watching Moon drum is just wild.

I always wonder if they knew the lyrics would forever-FOREVER-be relevant. I know they wrote it in the late 60’s, which was a turbulent time everywhere, but honestly, this is an immortal song,

When I look at your guy's reactions I realize how lucky I was to grow up in that era guys the energy was off the chart and music is all we had so we were completely focused please read the lyrics it's about history always repeating itself at the expense of millions of lives so all we can do is dance

..the cool keyboard sounds woven in the background are kind of the "glue" that keeps this song interesting....and "together". And the Daltrey roar towards the end ...I imagine a lion...haha. So cool.

I get the "they're jamming out" idea, but let's be clear, the song is a compositional masterpiece. There is nothing in this song that wasn't worked to perfection. Honestly the opposite of a "jam". But it does have that organic improvisational feel. As good as it gets. The song lacks nothing.
@gerardodoherty91782 жыл бұрын
Except maybe cowbell?
@arthurbishop31732 жыл бұрын
Agreed. This was no jam.
@DarthJ19772 жыл бұрын
I think part of the genius of the composition and the musicianship is evident in that it *feels* like a jam, it feels spontaneous, even though it is actually orchestrated.
@EatPieYes2 жыл бұрын
The jam feeling I figure comes from Entwistle and Moon being so proficient at their respective instruments that they would improvise quite a lot. Of course they were anchored by Townshend's songwriting but on top of that they were really free (and could it really be any other way with those guys). In this song they even have a couple of instrumental breaks as Ryan points out about 15 minutes in

I've heard this song probably as many times as I've peed in the morning. The way Moon comes in in the second synth sequence makes the hair on my arms stand up.

That's been called the most thrilling 18 seconds in rock and roll. They throw you off a cliff, then Moon beats you up on the way down, then you hit the ground with that tremendous scream.
