The Wiha 75985 and Kershaw TX-Tool Driver Kits: A Nick Quick Review

Today, I give a quick review of two pen-driver kits, one by Wiha Tools (the 75985), and one by Kershaw (the TX-Tool). The Kershaw, although half the price, is clearly the lesser tool in selection, build, and everything else, and in the end, I think if you're going to buy one of these, you'd as might as well do it right.
Here's a link to buy the Wiha Kit: amzn.to/2g1AGer

I just got the Wiha after watching your video and soon realized why an o-ring or gasket isn't just for waterproofing, I constantly was inadvertantly unscrewing the cap whenever I tightened any screws. Fortunately I found that an o-ring for a AAA sized light (Thrunite Ti3) fits and keeps the cap on more securely.

Nick- great review. I have that Wiha and it blows other torx bits out of the water. Much harder steel means it will keep on working.

I'm one of those guys that's been going "but this one's only six bucks" at the walmart torx bit kits, and I've probably burned through five of them because I keep needing to replace t6 and t8 bits that are completely unusable. Take it from me, just pay for a good set once, or regret it multiple times.

An hour ago i purchased a Wera kit with T5-6-7-8-9 bits in. I really like the Wiha set you got there, but the shipping costs (On Ebay and Amazon to Denmark) were higher than the tool itself, so i went to Bauhaus in town and got the Wera set, for like 40 dollars.. lol. But it is supposed of the best quality money can buy. and i didnt have to wait weeks for it to arrive. So i´m happy. Now i will try and tear down my spyderco manix 2, clean and oil it. Wish me luck... LOL :-)

Bought the Kershaw kit, the t6 broke the second(!) time I used it, moving a pocket clip. Maybe it only likes Kershaws and that was a CRKT Pilar, but, I just thought I'd pass that info on.

Assortment and handle design aside is the bit quality/screw head fitment as good with the handle contained driver? I actually prefer the design of the cheaper all in one driver versus that larger kit but I'm more concerned about the quality of the bits. I've read that the little boker/wiha stubby is amazing quality. I am considering that one but I prefer the look of this longer cheaper one. Have you used the stubby? Between the stubby and the cheaper one you have here which would you recommend?

Have a Kershaw torx set because my local knife store didn't carry wiha and the prices for it are way overinflated in Canada. The bits get stuck in the barrel of the pen all the time and it's a pain to get them out. Anyone know if the rubber washer could transfer to a wiha bit set? I do drop things in the snow often and it would be nice if when I finally get a wiha set, the bits aren't rusted through after only a year

KC tool has about any thing you want concerning wiha . Are any other German made tool. You can get 1 bit any as size are the size you have. I have several all torx and bought the larger size bits for each. I think the driver set comes 4 through 8 and I bought 9 and 10 for each. Hope all have a blessed day.

I pul the oil on my mini-grip and 0450 they move so well especially the griptilian I'll make a video soon I used to have to flick it closed no matter hot loose the pivot was. now I can hold it with the tip pointing up pull the axis lock and it just falls closed just buttery smooth or Butt'ry Smoove 😆 have a good one

I have an Ifixit Pro-Tech tool kit. Bought it for tinkering around in my computer but it's found more use for pocket knives. Comes with lots of useful things, prying tools, tweezers etc. and a really great driver kit, the box of which converts into a magnetic parts tray. They also make a larger 128 piece bit kit with every bit you've ever seen, going to pick one up eventually. Might come in handy for all those proprietary pivot screws :)

For sure a great kit. It is definitly a bit over priced, but it is by far one of the most complete kits on the market. I got the same kit just so i didn't have to deal with ordering multiple separate items. Very nice to have everything in a very organized setup.

In my estimation, bit quality is by far and away the most important factor. Is there any quantitative information available on the Kershaw vs the Wiha (or any other brand for that matter)? There seems to be plenty for knife blades (steel alloy, hardness, etc.), so why not driver bits?
@nathan_navaja

Brian Taylor Not sure about Kershaw's, but Wiha's website states their bits are "Chrome-Vanadium-Molybdenum Tool Steel, through-hardened and tempered for wear resistance." Made in Germany as well.

Stuff part of a cotton ball down the tube if you don't like Latin music sometime. Kershaw is great if your name is Ken or Kevin... Otherwise get the Wiha. I bought ONLY Wiha bits for use in a CNC machine shop. Their small Torx & Torx-plus bits far out perform any other brand. We used them to change carbide 'inserts' on indexable cutting tools.

Hey Nick, I have had trouble with cheaper torx bits breaking and dulling/twisting. I had a Kobalt bit set, a Husqvarna bit set and instead of stripping the screws they tend to twist or break. (although they have stripped screws on cheaper knives, but that's besides the point) Have you found that to happen ever with the Wiha? I'm hoping not so I can purchase this to solve my torx bit conundrum!
@NickShabazz

Wiha can still twist and break, but it's much less common and requires way more torque!

My biggest fault with these, no matter if good, is the loose bits just shaking around in there, would think they could just create a small little insert where they can all be put into and kept together, as the problem is if you lose one and dont notice, it will likely be gone for a long time, and having to dump them all out to find the one you want is just a pain. Unless you just keep the one you use most in there, but at that point you may as well just buy a small screwdriver.

Wiha manufactures the best precision screwdrivers and bits. I think their small bits are still manufactured in Germany, but the Wiha driver in the video is just a cheap China thing. You can buy the same holder (with crappier bits) at hardware stores for $3.
@whatmakesittick8362
@whatmakesittick8362 5 жыл бұрын
I'm late to the conversation but... You're right on the Wiha driver in this video. Harbor Freight carries a three pack of these drivers with some cheap bits. The drivers are worth it for the three pack at around $15. Then you get nice bits to fit in them. These drivers will contain 9 total bits. The HF three pack drivers are literally identical to the Wiha, minus the laser billboarding. I carry one daily and the other two remain with my home kit.

I personally agree with the wiha bits being better. I like to have as good as possible torx bits, especially on cheap soft screws as can be found on Ganzo's along with red locktite which needs heating with a soldering iron. I do however sometimes like softer cheap bits on high quality locktighted screws so the bit will strip before the screw does. I generally like the high value of the ganzo knives, but hate the very cheap screws they are using...raise the price a couple of bucks and use high quality screws...Sanrenmu does it, Ganzo could also. Also any knife maker who uses red locktite should be jailed. I know it is not illegal, but it should be along with proprietary hardware. I will buy no knives which have proprietary hardware...period!!! That is a deal breaker for me.

Been using the Kershaw for a year for casual disassembly (after buying those "cheaper" ones that truly sucked) and it does the job just fine for what it's intended use. It's not perfect or hi end but the bits don't slip or strip so good enough I don't think it's that inferior to this Weha.

like Wiha, but both are 100% overpriced gimmicks. you "might" get a better clip on these and surely the Wiha bits are going to be good. the handles however are worth $1, that is the price of the no brands. with the savings you'd add your own quality bits.
