The settings screens were made in HTML, so the Opera engine is used to display those. Also, a pretty silly thing is that the code for online is still in the OS, but they just removed the settings screens. So if you have a USB Ethernet adapter, you can manually edit the internet settings file to tell it to use it, and online just works.

Something worth mentioning that Scott kinda glossed over is that by the time this released outside of Canada, we were already aware that Nintendo was ending wi-fi support for the Wii in just a few months. Considering that, it makes a lot of sense that they just didn't include it in this model, since those buying would then have that access basically revoked shortly thereafter

the even funnier thing is how easy it is to get this console to work with internet connection because everything is basicly still there except from just the wifi-module itself. not that hard to get a wifi module and a sd-card reader in there and have it working as everything software side is still there, just disabled.

My grandma got sold this at a gamestop in like 2014 after our wii's disc drive stopped working. I was so sad when we got home and it didnt have internet. We ended up keeping the other wii just for netflix.
@delcanprobably2 жыл бұрын
When I was a kid we never connected our Wii to the internet, and even a couple of years ago I still knew people running an original Wii for their kids. So I can at least see the market they were trying to capture with the Wii Mini. And like parents don't want their kids on the internet anyway so no real loss. Even with graphics as aged as they are, it's still an absolute killer kids/family console, especially compared to modern consoles (this gen and last-gen) which seem to be almost entirely focused on core gamers (even the Switch isn't really aimed at young kids, especially with the prices).

We also have e-Transfer, which is like Cashapp or whatever, but free and automatically included with every major banking service, and I would say America will probably be getting it in the coming years.

@@hideofreakingkojima5457 Once you get it set up, it's the same thing. But the process is a lot more complicated.
@gohomenate2 жыл бұрын
@@hideofreakingkojima5457 Almost all methods of modding the original Wii require two things: an exploit and a homebrew application on an SD card. Some of the first modding methods made use of exploits discovered in games like Twilight Princess and Brawl. These exploits made it possible to run the homebrew application from the SD card and successfully mod the Wii. Newer methods of modding are much more simplified and make use of exploits found in the Wii Message Board or even the Internet Channel, removing the need for certain games or even an SD card. Since the Wii Mini doesn’t have an SD card or internet access, the methods used to mod the original Wii cannot be applied to the Wii Mini, making it much more difficult, even thought to be impossible for several years. It was eventually discovered that it‘s possible to mod the Wii Mini using its Bluetooth connectivity and a USB flash drive. It’s a very involved and technical process with multiple steps, though; you need to do a bit of tinkering with Linux and your computer needs to be close to the console for the whole time. Nintendo may work hard, but console modders work harder!

The Wii mini is my favorite looking version of the Wii. I love the black and red and the top load disc tray design. If anybody ever finds a way to get component video output back into the Wii mini I would totally install that mod and ditch my launch Wii. Edit: after a quick google search it looks like people have already done it. I will have to do it as well

I wonder how many of these were registered to Club Nintendo as it was shutting down

The Wii mini instead of a standard one ruined Christmas for me one year. Also, they test launch Canada because it is an identical market to the US with one-tenth the demand.

It’s honestly a worse deal to have any wii without wii sports Also shoutouts to showing mario and luigi using the wii wheel on the box but not including a wii wheel

This also came out two years after the Wii stopped receiving big releases. If there were some big AAA game that released along side it, the Wii Mini would have been a cheap way for any holdouts to enter the Wii ecosystem to experience said game. I also think it should have had an HDMI port and supported 720p output even if the games were still rendered 480p. Composite was still being included on most new TVs at the time, but not many new devices were supporting composite output except for cheap plug & play games. They also should have kept the Wi-Fi and allowed streaming apps like you said. Nintendo could have experimented with this devices a little and maybe found more success. Instead, they played it safe and games us a way to play Wii games in 480i for under $100.

Worth noting, Nintendo's consoles (Wii, WiiU, Switch) work with any ethernet adapter. You don't need Nintendo's. I wish they'd advertise that more, because the only way you'd know is by searching up ethernet support on the Nintendo website and seeing that the FAQ mentions any regular one will work. But yes, the Wii Mini simply doesn't allow it. Even worse, while you can Homebrew it to enable ethernet access, it requires replacing the operating system with a regular Wii's because the Wii Mini's assumes there is no internet ever. And you can't use the normal exploits to homebrew it because of the lack of internet and also an SD card slot, so you have to use a USB - bluetooth combo exploit. Replacing the OS incorrectly will brick the mini. Even worse, because there's no SD card slot, and only one USB port, you can't expand your Homebrew storage (not to mention Wii shop channel storage at all) while also using the ethernet (perhaps a USB hub would work, haven't seen it). Overall Nintendo stripped out everything that hackers used to easily homebrew the Wii, and made it as inconvienent as possible. Which is a shame because in my opinion the Wii's homebrew community is one of it's best qualities. The Wii, to this day, has the strongest homebrew community of any device, period.

Not any USB adapter, it has to be supported and compatible idk what the requirements are but I have two adapters and one works and the other does not on my switch.

Tbh I would have loved to have these back in the day, the colours are great and the wii remote looks so good with jacket, plus I barely ever used internet at all on my regular wii. Here in australia idk if they were sold much but it would have been cool to have one

Not all Wii Minis came with MKW, especially in Canada. I got one as a Christmas gift in 2012, and it had no games included. I only used my Wii Mini for playing Wii Sports (purchased separately) for 3 years.
