My running theory is that the audience who originally played the Super Mario series on the NES and Super NES started having children of their own who were old enough to play video games themselves and to appeal to that generation of parents, Nintendo stripped down the Mario formula to its most recognizable elements. The supporting theory here is that Miyamoto and co were nearing retirement and wanted to cash in on their most bankable IP

I got an original DS as a kid and never upgraded. I didn't felt like I was missing out on anything. I even played all of the Guitar Hero games on it.

Super Smash Brothers was my first smash game. The only two Nintendo 64 games from Nintendo I actually completed were smash and Super Mario 64. Unfortunately I grew up as a PlayStation guy and after my Nintendo 64 broke I never got another Nintendo system until my family bought a Nintendo Wii. And it wasn't until recently that I found a copy of Super Smash Brothers Brawl at a GameStop of all things. I proceeded to boot up the game and I then played 8 hours worth of its single player content immediately upon booting it up. No joke I sat down and just played the game continuously and had an absolute blast. The amount of content brawl has and The elusive unlockables really make it fun to just play over and over and over again, even if the single player content can feel a little bit harsh it's still a blast to play. Competitive wise I never cared for smash because I feel like games like Dragon Ball fighterz, Tekken, and Street Fighter are the best ways to play a competitive fighting game( that and getting into a fighting game that has a really robust community of friendly people well also having a good amount of solid mechanics is difficult in itself😢) But I do see the appeal and I can't deny that matches can be tense if they are one-on-one. But the only Nintendo console I still own to this day is a Nintendo Wii and brawl is the only smash game I have bothered finding and collecting. It's just that fun play.

Mario Maker for 3DS was the first way for me to play Mario Maker. I don't have a Wii U, although now it doesn't even matter because they're either releasing ports or making sequels that feel really similar to their initial games, on the Switch. But at the time I had no way of playing Mario Maker, and so I had gotten a New 2DS XL with Mario Maker. I was really happy, but dammit, not being able to share levels online is such a bitchy move. First of all, this was at the end of the 3DS' lifetime. Sure, we had gotten SOME titles released after the Switch came out, but nobody gives a rat's ass about those, especially since they are mostly ports. Even when MM3DS came out, Nintendo should have known that literally nobody is going to care about their 3DS and take it with them on the go anymore. And even then, why couldn't they have made it optional and kept online? The internet still works on the 3DS to this day, and it works perfectly fine too. They had no reason to strip the ONE selling point of Mario Maker to appease a gimmick that is now DEAD because nobody cares about it anymore. At the very least we have Mario Maker 2. Got it on day one and while I still can't share them yet due to not having Online, it's nice to know I CAN do it.

One time I bought a copy of Overwatch that was a digital only physical game on Amazon. It was missing the digital code inside. Then when I went to return it, I was told I had run out of time to return it (I literally went to return it a week after I got it). Getting anything off of Amazon, especially games, these days is the wild west 🥲

That happened to me when I bought Metroid Other M on Amazon. I had no idea it was the PAL version because the box art was the same except for the damn rating. So I sold it back on eBay for pennies because no one wanted it. Not only was it Other M, it was the PAL version.

What I hate about the mario franchise (and what made me straight up quit it after mario galaxy 2) is how (ignoring some RPG's and handheld games) bowser is the villain of every game. Yeah, Wart was the villain for Mario Bros 2... but that was another game changed to a Mario game for the US so Wart was never intended for the Mario series anyway. The japanese version mario 2 just got bowser again. Imagine if in Mario Land 2 they used Bowser again, we would never have gotten Wario or his franchise. All these cool interesting characters we can never see because they think shoving a turtle that goes "gwahaha!" in our faces will never get old.

For me, Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door was the best of the Paper Mario series. However, I did notice a drop in quality when Super Paper Mario came out for the Wii. Lack of interesting partners; but great story/plot. ❤ But Sticker Star...😢 Almost killed the series completely.

Something kind of interesting that I remember about Mini Mario and Friends Amiibo Challenge is that around early 2016, there was a promotion going on where if you bought an Amiibo at select stores (at least GameStop, I don't know about other stores), you'd get a download code for the game around a month before it's official release on the eShop. I know this myself since I did get a download code for the game when I bought a Bowser Amiibo, and even if the game isn't amazing, I find it kind of cool that people were able to play the game a bit early this way.

Funny how Scott is soo dismissive of Wonderful 101 when it's literally one of the best games on the system, like yeah most people didn't get it when it came out but now with its rerelease people are seeing just how amazing this game is. I can understand the wii ports vs switch ports. The wii ones are outright funny, basically the equivalent of “we have that at home”.

I think the custom boxes make more sense if you grew up during the era of renting games.
