Amazing coloration of this juniper. I kept hollering at you not to fill that void, but it did provide a visual comparison so folks know the next time you ask. 😉 I like how you take on a variety of challenges and end up creating gorgeous pieces. Thanks for sharing your talent!

Hi 👋, Phil from Phil, I hope you are all keeping safe and well, That surely is amazing, beautiful grain, that mother nature has made, and you, of course, 😂 . I think it was right to fill it , firstly we have made it a bit darker, and I know you don’t like using it, but I might of use resin with colour, but nature is what it is, and it produces some amazing growth and sculptures in its process, I think it looks amazing. A beautiful piece of art , Well done. Phil, stay safe, Phil from the moulin France.

Even though I appreciate your high tech dust collection system, I voted against "Philling" the hole in the bottom of the bowl. But I must accept the majority decision and the result of the patch, which really isn't bad looking, just not the natural approach that we've come to know and love. The result of your creative turning is magnificent with all the levels and curves and angles around the top. And that wood is spectacular! (I love the smell of pencils in a sharpener.) Thank you for creating this wonderful piece!

@@PhilAndersonShadyAcresWoodshop Being from the northwest I’m surprised you don’t know what a pfitzer juniper is. It’s a low growing, fairly fast growing shrub most often found in the front of people’s homes. You’ll see it as a barrier between the sidewalk and the front lawn or along the side property lines. I have a piece of juniper root that I dug up and finished as a 9” tall stand for whatever you would put on a stand. I don’t know how to attach pictures here in KZbin or I would’ve sent it to you.

I was a little perplexed to think how you could find enough clean wood to create something but you did it and it's beautiful. The colours are sublime. I didn't want the hole to be filled with ground chips and glue, but it was interesting to see the contrast between the holes and the filled hole. All in all, I LIKE it! I think it would make a good fruit bowl.

Hi Phil ! Your little giggle at the 8-minute mark and "Wow'ee!" said it all. We've had about 3 nights of cooler temps; such a relief. Got one night of mid 50s (around 3 a.m.). The mosquitoes were fierce this year (with all the rain). Lake at RECORD high!!!. Glad we didn't get all that precip in the form of snow. Bro in Province west of me got hail the size of apricots. A first for us. He's closer to the Great Lakes; I'm farther north and downstream from him, so, no hail here hopefully, however. (I wonder if Eliza Doolittle could say all them h-words, aïe? Ha ha.) Hey Phil, You have inspired me to go out into the cold dark tundra of NY state to cut in to a hunk of root I pulled from the yard last year. The piece has coloring much like your Juniper. I turned a small piece of it and it cut like butter but also had a void. I filled it with very fine wood powder and CA several times to get it level with the surrounding wood. It turned black and polished up nice but took a long time to get it right. I think you were right to leave the second void natural and open-looks great! Coincidentally I have the same dust collection set up! If anyone wants one I'd be happy to send a link. Thanks for the vid!

World Class piece as always Phil. I am with you, I do not ,like the patches. Regardless of what the void might look like, it is natural and not artificially filled. The voids are where the Gremlins live. Some of the most desirable bowls I have turned have voids inside. Let us keep "Mother Nature" first and foremost.

I'm glad you philled the hole. WE are part of nature, and this shows the natural inclination of man to 'fix' things and make them functional for our needs. I know this was never intended to be a "functional" bowl, but who knows? One day, years or decades from now, if someone who's thirsty finds it, they can use it to gather water and be sustained!! And if that never happens, "Chucky" is still a beautiful piece of art!!

Hi Phil, Another stunner! I was a "yes" this time. Usually I'm like you and like to leave the natural voids etc. However, this time it just was not nice to look at and needed to go away. The other void was OK and not so "ragged" looking. Sure, the patch is not desired but I still think it is the lesser of two evils...so to speak. Take Care, Myles

I like it. Very unique piece. And I think you told me what the dead bush in front of my house is. When My parents and I were building this house about 45 years ago. My mom planted 2 bushes in the front close to the house. One died years ago but the other hung in there till a few years ago. Still had some life, but mostly browned out. Had grown to about 10 foot tall. Last time I tried to cut out just the brown dead stuff, there wasn’t going to be much left. Cut everything but the main trunk and bigger branches. That’s when I saw the reddish inside. Haven’t done anything with it yet, but seeing this I know what it will look like .
