The Wildest General From the Civil War

In 1859, Congressman Daniel Sickles shot and killed the man sleeping with his wife. After escaping a prison sentence, Sickles disobeyed orders in the Civil War and lost a leg. After the war, General Dan Sickles donated the leg to the Army Medical Museum. And that's just the start when it comes to the wildest general in the Civil War.

Dan Sickles, by moving his troops from his assigned area of defense nearly turned the outcome of Gettysburg into to loss for the Union. The gapping hole left by his movement was plugged by the 1st Minnesota Infantry Regiment. They were ordered to prevent the advancing Confederates from breaking through the Union line. Outnumbered 5 to 1 the 1st Minnesota charged the advancing line. They stopped them and held them until reinforcements arrived. In doing so, they lost 80% of their men, but they held the line. Dan Sickles was no hero.

It's funny -- if you do one of the horseback tours of Gettysburg, Sickles' disobedient advance does appear to be a logical move. I knew about the leg, but until seeing this video I had no idea of his other activities. You should do an episode on George Henry Thomas (The Rock of Chickamauga). An exemplary leader who, though roundly distrusted by his contemporaries (including President Lincoln), did his duty bravely and without complaint. Despite his stellar record, he refused to chase the limelight, preferring instead to let his accomplishments speak for themselves. He was, in short, the best our Union could have asked for (and should be recognized as such).

@Mottleydude1
@Mottleydude1 Жыл бұрын
Thomas was a great General but had his flaws. He never lost a battle but he was not exactly an aggressive commander. He would not attack his opponents unless he was absolutely prepared too. That about cost him his job at Nashville as he disobeyed a direct order from Grant to immediately engage J.B. Hood. Thomas patiently waited until he felt he had the supplies, his men properly trained and lost more time waiting for bad weather to clear (an ice storm had occurred). Grant was livid. He had two previous opportunities to win the war that had been lost because the general in charge did not follow orders to attack immediately upon gaining their objectives. The most notorious one was when Union Gen. Smith had gained a position just outside of Petersburg. Grant had specifically ordered Smith to immediately attack Petersburg but as Smith and his army had arrived via a forced march Gen Smith felt his men were to exhausted and delayed his attack until morning. What Gen. Smith didn’t know was Petersburg was practically undefended. So while Smith rested his men, P.T. Beauregard, who was at Petersburg got Word to Lee who immediately sent troops to Petersburg and by the next morning when Smith was ready to attack Petersburg was fully defended and Smith’s opportunity to have ended the war right then and there was gone. Grant was so furious that he had Gen. Smith, and old friend and mentor, relieved from duty. So when Thomas refused to follow Grants direct orders to attack immediately Grant was furious. After being ordered to Attack several times Grant had had enough. Grant’s main concern was not that Thomas would lose the engagement but that by procrastinating J.B. Hood would just bypass Thomas and invade Kentucky. Had Hood done so it would have upended Grants grand strategy and the war would last longer with more men killed and treasure spent. So Grant was well within his rights to order Thomas relieved from command which he did. Grant sent another General to Nashville with orders to relieve Thomas from command and take command of Thomas army until Grant personally arrived. Grant then got on a train with the intent of traveling to Nashville but when he got to D.C. he was informed Thomas had finally attacked and had annihilated JB Hoods army. Grant held a grudge with Thomas from thereafter.

Very timely video - the crimes of the rich and powerful being viewed differently. With some potentially getting away with things that the plebs would never get away with.

We have a medal of honor recipient from the Civil War in our family. That alone would’ve given me a bump in pay and rank increase when I joined the US military if I knew to say that, which I didn’t… 😂

Great video. How about doing a video about the filibuster William Walker? He has a very interesting story. Cornelius Vanderbilt had a shipping line that took people to the Gold Rush from NY and New Orleans, across Nicaragua and then up to San Francisco from San Juan del Sur. He sent Walker down to stabilize the country. Walker also had no military experience. But, he made himself a general and used to walk through battles - and never got shot. He then made himself president of Nicaragua for a couple years until they threw him out. He came back down 4 times and was finally shot by a firing squad in Honduras, where his grave is today. There's a movie about him (Walker, 1987) books about hi and one by him. Check him out. He's a very interesting character. Happy New Year!

Crazy man, politician, Civil War General...Sickles wore many hats, most of them strangely successful. As a Civil War student, I can see why there's a case to be made either way for his actions at Gettysburg.

A few years ago My family & I scheduled a horse back tour of the Gettysburg battlefield. One of the the licensed battlefield guides found out I was a fifth generation Sickles & requested that she ride next to me for the tour. Although I heard a lot of stories about General Dan from my older family members, she filled in a lot of details & backstories that are not discussed in this program. I'm not saying this as a slam against this Weird History episode or defending the general, only that there is much more that can be learned by visiting Gettysburg. There is a very interesting book that I read titled "Sickles at Gettysburg" written by James A. Hessler.

Cheated on his wife, murdered people in cold blood, got soldiers killed for pointless reasons, took financial interests in political affairs, and stole money. Avoided justice at all turns, and somehow got himself a Medal Of Honor. Sounds like a True American Hero if all of this is true.

Content idea:. I would love to hear about a Pirate jan jensen von sallee from the Netherlands. It is my understanding that his son and wife (my 9th generation grand parents) had quite a colorful history in New Amsterdam in the 1600s in addition to his own dynamic story.

If you actually visit the Gettysburg battlefield and see the ground upon which Sickles was ordered to defend, you might start to sympathize with his plight and understand his reasoning. Also...by the time the Battle of Gettysburg occurred in 1863, Sickles was no longer some inexperienced officer. He had fought and led men in multiple major engagements by that time.
