*friendly reminder bluebottles are siphonophores NOT jellyfish though they’re closely related(:* which means they’re colonial organisms, which means none of the parts can function on their own even if they seem to. Each siphonophore is actually a colony of individual parts (each one of these) called zooids, which are produced as the siphonophore grows, and stay connected together. I do wish people would stop calling them jellyfish…

@@hugo_shortz Might be a bad thing to condition into your kid though, because you run the risk of them not adequately displaying/expressing pain in an attempt to look fine & "manly" in order to appease adults. Teaching/training children to "tough it out" can backfire badly. The child's reactions were completely reasonable, and was obviously feeling afraid due to the shock of suddenly being stung & inexperience/lack of previous knowledge, so calming him down and explaining to him that the pain is temporary, that it will pass and that he is in no danger is the best route in order to avoid him panicking too much. Getting to "cry it out" a little can help him cope with the initial overwhelm of the situation/provide some relief, as well as aid him in processing the strong emotions and regain control over his reaction, as can reminding him to breathe in a controlled manner (like they did the other kid nearby) so that he can endure it while it lasts. They're not necessarily the best at assessing situations & judging the severity or potential long-term consequences of (untreated, or treated after a prolonged delay) injuries, for example, and stuff like this could hinder their ability to communicate in these types of situations if they've learned that doing so is a source of discomfort or means that they're failures/weak/"babies".

I imagine the first time for most people is a bit of shock as well! Remember my first time - ouch! But once you know the pain subsides, that seems to help with the overall pain aye
