We live in the countryside and have a large-ish garden but have never seen a hedgehog in the five years we've been here, and we've often lamented the absence of such a creature in a rural garden setting, where they should be most prevalent - and once were. However, two weeks ago one appeared on the patio munching on the pile of bird seed we leave out for visiting pheasants and songbirds. Thrilling to finally see one. We've fed it cat food as per instructions and it seems to love it. Every night now it comes back just after dark to feast. Two nights ago we were walking back to the house at dusk down the lane when it suddenly appeared in the edge of the road/verge, scurrying along as fast as it's little legs could take it, and overtook us, oblivious to our presence walking parallel to it. It was obviously eager for supper! Ha ha! It's so wonderful to finally have one visit and watch it at large. I hope with all my heart that these wonderful creatures will regain some more secure numbers in our land.

I`m now a proud mum of a Hedgehog I found drowning in a bucket of water my octogenarian mother left out.She was fed. She was massive...she had hogs...went away for 4-5 weeks last year 2018. Its February 2019....and she's awake!! Heck didn't expect it. I know she`s up....seen green poo. She must be hungry. She's a big hog. So, I`m feeding her again. She eats it all! Poor thing. I`ll look after her :)

We're lucky to have hedgehogs on our property, and one has made its nest in the garage, which it gets into through the 6cm gap under the wicket door. It's safe from predators there, and the worst of the weather, and in return it does a great job of keeping the number of slugs down ! 😊

My husband has been moaning that our back garden was too messy. This last week we found a family of mum and at least 3 babies eating on our patio. We’ve been feeding them cat food every night since. We hear them rustling in the fallen leaves from our bamboo (think that’s where they’re living) So we got our reward for being the messy garden, I didn’t even think they could get into our back garden! Yaboo sucks to our tidy neighbours with their astroturfing! 🦔 🦔 🦔

Lived here for years and never noticed any. This year I've seen 4 in my garden... but it's averaging 3. 2 are residents, 3rd visits, 4th probably comes later on. Bought 1 house, made another and did a makeshift hut for the night as it's cold, using square plant pot, with another inside to give barrier from wind, all with hay and leaves. I change the flooring every night or every other night depending on the dirtyness in their food station, using pizza boxes or card, just to level it nicely as the plastic box is bottom end up and food is on the lid, so everything can be rinsed easier. I usually give 2/3 sachets of Wiskas or Felix meat in jelly and water, on my son's old plate with sections, it's easier to put food and water in, it's low level and hard to tip aswell. Minced up my son's dinner from yesterday for tonights meal along with usual, at least it's not going to waste! Mine prefer chicken and turkey. I didn't have cat food yesterday so cooked up some mince. Had some leftover and they've eaten everything else and left the mince lol they love mealworms and apples too. Enjoy your wild hedgies as they are lovely and endangered.

I've got a couple coming into the garden at the minute. These ones are like the "punks" of the garden visitors, they leave their "calling cards" everywhere, upturn the water dishes and eat tons of dry cat food and mealworms. They're wonderful creatures though. I can sit outside in the dark and they snuffle around and if you're quiet enough, you get a little insight into their lives. Trying to get saucers away from them to refill is a job, they sit on the saucer and don't move, just squat and crunch away. The cat I used to have ended up sleeping on top of one during the winter in his outdoor hut at night, I made it too comfortable for the hogs and they moved in and one actually gave birth in the hut. When I was cleaning it out there was this small bundle of spines in my hand with a grin etched on its features...cute as anything. They do like their home comforts!.
@wildlifegardenproject
@wildlifegardenproject 5 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's so great that they chose to give birth in your hedgehog house! How did the babies get on? By the way, the advice now is to not give hogs mealworms. If they eat a few that have fallen off the bird table that's not a problem, but if they eat too many it can lead to metabolic bone disease. Just wanted to make sure you are aware. Sounds like you are doing a great job for them though!
@jamiefoyers2800

@@wildlifegardenproject Thanks for the advice. I never knew that mealworms were that bad for hedgehogs. I'll stick to feeding the birds with them if possible. The hoglets that have all been born in the garden have all survived as far as I know. The problem is that living next to a main road is not an ideal location and I've seen my fair share of casualties over the past few years and it breaks my heart when I see that some got hit by the traffic and died. Every hog that appears in the garden gets a name from me. "Einstein", "Tesla", "Hawking"," Calvin" and "Sid" are just a few to have passed through and left an impression and I try to do my best to keep them fed and watered on the lead up to hibernation.

Not sure why you would want to! They are wild animals and need to rummage around many gardens to find enough food, so no, I wouldn't recommend trying to keep a hedgehog in your garden. If you put food and water out, and make sure there are gaps in your fences or hedges, you may be lucky enough to catch some glimpses of hedgehogs as they make their way from your garden to the next, which will be much more rewarding :)

My dog brought me a wild hedgehog which shivering and shocked and it fell from a bush it climbed in my back garden I brought it in and used my dogs old cage to make it a home until I released the hedgehog I named her greta and am releasing it into the wild on Saturday, it loved my company as I gave it loads of chicken to munch on. It got quite use to my scent, is that a problem? Like will it not want to be in the wild and come back or will it go enjoy freedom?

I live in a tiny village in North Yorkshire England, one pub no shops for miles and I live right next door to a pig farm (yep summer smells bad) I've lived here for seven years now and we noticed a hedgehog several years ago, I loved watching it walk around the three gardens on my lane but then the two elderly ladies that lived in the next two bungalows moved our to nursing homes, then we had two new sets of neighbours and the one next to me wanted to put up a five foot fence between us, once it was up I remembered about the hedgehog and asked if we could cut a hole in the fence for it but she refused as she has small dog's, so it didn't take long before we noticed the hedgehog had gone, it stayed like that for year's until a few months ago when we saw a hedgehog in the garden again and I can't describe just how happy I was, it's October now and I'm a little worried about the hedgehog as it's not that big and fat, I'm going to start putting out some meat a couple times a week and see how that goes, the only problem I have is not cats it's Rats, living right next to a pig farm we can get rats and mice in the garden and I'm worried that if i put out the meat I'm inviting more rats to my garden, they would even get into that feeding station shown in the video above, if anyone has any advice I would be very grateful, I love having my hedgehog visitor but would prefer not to have rat visitors who can and do get into the house, thanks y'all

That garden is a nice space for wildlife. I've had a hedgehog tapping on the catflap for the last week. I bought it a hedgehog house and left a large pile of leaves outside its' entrance last night. Today all the leaves have been taken, as well as the biscuit trail. I hope this means it has chosen the house for its winter hibernation. I want to check the food bowl and replenish it but am afraid to unscrew the lid and check inside in case the hedgehog has started its hibernation and I scare it away for good. Can you advise The Wildlife Garden Project, please?
@wildlifegardenproject
@wildlifegardenproject 5 жыл бұрын
Oh how lovely! Hedgehogs normally start hibernating October/November so it could be hibernating, or it may just be resting and could be out and about again tonight! I would put some more food and water outside the house and see if it's still there in the morning. You could also try propping some small twigs in the entrance and see if they have been disturbed in the morning. If they have, you know the hedgehog used the entrance. Some people do check inside their hedgehog boxes, but if you suspect they are using it it is probably best to leave them undisturbed. If you do check, then make sure you do it carefully and quietly and replace the top quickly once you have checked to minimise the disruption. Keep up the good work :)

Found 3 baby hedgehogs in my green house 2 weeks back 2 vanished over a week ago, 1 has hanged about, been feeding it water and soft bird food, tried cat food but its not interested, wasn't sure if it was still young and should be just on milk, but then it has been eating some bird food, tried stimulating it to go toilet, but only managed a tiny bit of urine, not sure if it was old enough to pass by himself, bit worried about it being in the green house as so hot, last 2 nights I've come home from work its been outside the greenhouse and touched my heart as its come running over to me kinda squeaking out of excitement and tried cuddling into my leg, he really is a cutie pie , is strange thou, 2 years back in same place found family of 5 , we have no holes in our fence but they are coming and going some how

Sounds like you're already doing a great job! You can buy or make a hedgehog house, but wood and leaf piles are great for them too. Also be sure to avoid chemicals and slug pellets in your garden. Feel free to share the video on our Facebook page - would love to see it! Laura

I have hedgehogs in my garden and feed them every night. However I saw a small one that was very shaky on his feet about a week ago. Googled his weight and it said he was probably about eight weeks old. I popped him in a box and kept him indoors for a few nights, he’s now in a run in the garden as it’s warmed up again and has gained weight - gone from 290 grams to 350 grams. How heavy does he need to be before being released?

I've found two hedgehogs in my garden recently, one huge and one smaller yesterday. My garden is a walked Victorian terrace, and I have patio, not grass but I do have a lot shrubs flower beds etc, next door is a complete overgrown wild garden. I don't know what to do with then when they turn up, a vet said that if I found them in my garden I was to put them back where I found them, but is suspect they came from next door, so I put them n my garden and I don't know how they are making the journey. I will make a feeding station. Do you think they climb up the nettles and tumble over my wall. If so they can't get back, so should I lay a towel for them to climb? Please answer,

Hello, could I have some advice please? I have a new wild hedgehog and I don't know how much of the winter it spent in its house. I only discovered it was there last week. I have a trail cam on the entrance now and am surprised by how little time it spends out of doors at night time. Only last night did I manage to prevent the local cats from getting inside its feeding station so I know it ate some mealworms and a good handful of cat biscuits, prior to that it has been going out a few times a night and staying out for about 40 minutes to an hour each time. After it came out of its feeding station last night it didn't even drink and it went straight back into its house and didn't come out again for the rest of the night. It seems abnormal behaviour; do you think it is poorly in some way? Weakened by a cold winter and in need of some assistance?

According to David Attenborough hedgehogs are very adept climbers & would have no difficulty scaling a garden fence. he goes as far to say that on one occasion a hedgehog was found upstairs in someone's property after climbing up the ivy. who's right here?

Great video! Sadly, I came across a casualty on my doorstep, which I can only suppose was either mine or my neighbours cats. I still want to encourage Hedgehogs into my garden though. I understand that, whilst not unknown, cats can be curious but unlikely to attack. Please correct me if I'm wrong as I want to do the right thing by these quirky little critters.

I have had a hedgehog station for years and cats they have never bothered with the hedgehogs 🦔 i doubt if they would pull them out or try to get them if anything they have been curious but soon got fed up and would not attempt those spikes . They always seem to be victimised for being cats 🐈 perhaps some should learn and understand about the beautiful nature of the cat 😥😻
